You play tons of creatch and then board wipe. Your stuff remains but theirs is gone. Then you swing through an open field. Even if they do manage to kill your shit, it fuels Karador who then brings them back.

Despite the card being part of the decks name sake, 2 Startled Awake  Flip's need to go. The main function of milling is by drawing cards myself, and Startled Awake  Flip is really serving more as a big punch.

So, the deck loses 2 of them. Instead of those two, were going to sub in Another Magmatic Insight and another Tormenting Voice

thanks to /u/AcademyRuins for showing me this tech

New cards + reasons 4/21/2016

thesamhale, 9 years ago

So after some research and testing I've made a couple of changes. I've gone up to the full 4 Inspectors, since a 1/2 body early goes nice both on the draw and on the play. Since I'm usually pulling a number of Envoys on the draw, having this as a one drop to provide pressure is nice. It pairs well with Captain's Claws also since you can turn it into a 2/2, and having clues to use your mana on should you flood is sweet. It also helps with the fact that you'll sometimes be empty handed late. It's not a ton of advantage but it can give you what you need in a pinch. I've trimmed an Ayli and an Ally Encampment to make room for Always Watching and Drana, Liberator of Malakir. Drana is a natural move even though our 3 drop spot is a little cluttered as it is. That's why there's only 2 of each. Drana isn't super great when you draw more than 1, and it's much more of a finisher so it you can curve into it you're in great shape. Always Watching is awesome if you can put it down turn 3 with Lantern Scout lurking. It also makes Cutthroat, Envoy, and Healer a lot better. For the sideboard I've moved March of the Tomb over there, and added two Fate Forgotten. On MTGO I'm running a lot into Myth Realized and Tutelage, which the deck doesn't always have trouble with but sometimes you can't find your Duress/Transgress in time. It's also good against your mirror colors control, since you can unlock your Silkwrapped or Statis Snared stuff. I'll continue to play with it and see what I can find.

Latest update adds card draw option.

XeroData, 9 years ago

The latest update to the deck removes the 2 Cliffhaven Vampires and replaces them with Asylum Visitors. Hopefully between this and the journal, my empty hand woes are behind me.

-1 Dismember, +1 Anguished Unmaking
-1 Tectonic Edge, +1 Ghost Quarter
I decided I want the versatility of Anguished Unmaking more than the ability to cast the spell for less mana. This deck has trouble dealing with plainswalkers. This should help.
Ghost Quarter can hit inkmoth nexus against affinity, a point made to me in the comments by TristanTaylorsVoice. Thank you for that.
Sideboard: -1 Timely Reinforcements, +1 Pulse of the Fields
Gives me more versatility in what to fetch with Mystical Teachings against aggressive decks. Provides an option for repetitive lifegain, which the deck lacks.

Shadows Over Innistrad

Adding a few fun new cards from SOI:

Seasons Past replaces Creeping Renaissance. I'm pretty confident Seasons Past is going to give be better options when choosing what to return from my graveyard.

Ulvenwald Hydra replaces Thunderfoot Baloth. Power/toughness based on number of lands? Love it. Lets me tutor any utility land I want when it enters the battlefield? Perfect. I didn't love how conditional Thunderfoot was and it never really turned the tide of games for me.

Tireless Tracker replaces Praetor's Counsel. I've used Praetor's Counsel once and it was a total win-more situation. Just doesn't seem all that valuable in most games. I'm excited to try out Tireless Tracker as an appropriate card draw engine for Azusa. Certainly I'll have a great deal of landfall triggers and I like that the Clue artifacts can be sacrificed any time I choose. End of an opponent's turn, sac all my Clues for cards - much better than having to pay the mana during my main phase using something like Seer's Sundial.

Sylvan Scrying replaces Expedition Mapfoil since it's just better. A nod to the Land Seeking Woman for reminding me of that.

Scour from Existence replaces Terastodon. I never liked giving my opponents free chump blockers with Terastodon and Forkbeard highlighted the benefits of having more colorless removal, in case of sudden Iona, Shield of Emeria and the like.

Updated Description

Ashockfan, 9 years ago

Updated the deck description to match new Main and SB, and also included some insight on what matchups my sideboard is targeting and what you should add if you're more worried about different matchups, like Goggles and Ramp

Swapped the Kiora, Master of the Depths works in this deck, while crashing wave was a pet card. Testing out Illusionist's Bracers as well as readjusting some numbers in the deck to streamline it a bit more. There were too many Ascendancies at 4, trying with two, Freed from the Real CAN be a control card, but generally I hold it in hand until I have a Bloom Tender or other combo-creature online. Wolfbriar was taken out as his board impact wasn't immediate he was absolutely a win more card.

Minor Swap

Zaquire, 9 years ago

Took out Sorin and the Always Watching for Dragonlord Dromoka and 3 Bygone Bishop

Also looking into dropping the Lieutenants for Patrols (in my maybe) for straight drops but with the Rites I don't think I need it.

Also thinking about dropping the abbeys, Most of the time the tokens are going to powering more than 1 star/star creature and with Arlinn they can then all get +1/+1 each turn and then with her emblem they become Tims.

Another tournament

kessdaddy, 9 years ago

I went 3-1 again Wednesday night at a standard tournament only losing to bant company, trying to decide if it's worth playing hollowed moonlight in the side or not, other than that all was well with the deck, give me a +1 if you like if not comment what you think I'm doing wrong with the deck

Nissa Binded

Wiinsomniacs, 9 years ago

So Nissa, Voice of Zendikarfoil was removed for Bind. I always had trouble with 2 Nissa's in the deck, as when I'd cycle through it I'd find both and wonder which one to actually play. Nissa, Vastwood Seer  Flip always won. Bind gives me a little more answers, and now I don't need to worry about 2 Nissa's on at the same time.
