Finalizing a new sideboard

Apoptosis, 11 years ago

I have settled on a new sideboard for gaming tonight at my LGS. Cards in the maybe board were those that I was also considering. Please let me know whether you think I should change some of the selections. I'm open minded to suggestions. Thanks again!

SCG IQ

DanSolo126, 11 years ago

Made top 8 and got 4th seed at SCG IQ. I got out the first round of the top 8 bracket due solely to being stuck on 2 land in game 3. There were 32 people there in all.

toastytoast, 11 years ago

Updated with Iroas, need to pick up Aurelia, the Warleader before(if) she goes up. I will update this as more Journey into Nyx is spoiled.

SCG IQ 3rd

Rasta_Viking29, 11 years ago

A lot of the regular competition was out of town for GP Phoenix so it was a small soft field. Pretty disappointed I couldn't close on this one.

Swiss Rounds

Rd 1 - Bant Control - 2-1

Nothing better than seeing my opponent lead off with a Hallowed Fountainfoil

Rd 2 - MUD - 2-0

This match up has been turned into a strength with my sideboard choices. They expect the usual great match up for them and are usually thrown off by how fast my deck pushes through 20 dmg against them.

Rd 3 - Red Aggro - 2-0

Go big or go home! That's really all these match ups boil down to.

Rd 4 - B/W Midrange - 0-2

Lifebane Zombie has turned an even match up into a nightmare. I was never able to establish a board presence or maintain a hand.

Rd 5 - Esper Control - Intentional Draw

One of the regular tourney attendants. Could have dream crushed him but agreeing to drawing in could come back around to me in the future.

TOP 8

Quarter Finals - Bant Control - 2-0

Opponent from rd 1. He was obviously dejected about having to play me again and played like the loss was already in the books.

Semi Finals - B/W Midrange - 0-2

Ugh, see rd 4. All I needed was to flip a Stormbreath Dragon off the top for 5 turns game 2 to win, the gods of magic said no.

3rd place... So close. The match up vs Black must be remedied, Lifebane Zombie is back breaking. Otherwise it was a good showing. Played another IQ the following day splashing white into this deck.

Board nuke changes

Brawler_1337, 11 years ago

So, instead of Damnation (which I don't have) and Killing Wave (which isn't very good unless you can dump lots of mana into it), I decided to put in Black Sun's Zenith and Hellfire. I don't actually have Hellfire, and I know it's not the best board wipe, but it's a really metal card and quite a bit cheaper than Damnation.

SCG IQ 5th

Rasta_Viking29, 11 years ago

Made some quick changes after losing to B/W Midrange 2x the day before playing G/R. White came up big for me and tilted the match up back in my favor.

Swiss Rounds

Rd 1 - White Auras - 2-1

Buddy from my home shop's deck. We playtested before the tourney with him smoking me in both games. I was pretty worried about the match up and starting the day 0-1. I ended up having great draws and made some timely plays to take it in 3.

Rd 2 - B/W Midrange - 2-1

Same guy I had suffered my only two losses yesterday too. Lost the first game in typical fashion. Post board Elspeth, Sun's Champion showed up to -3 2x Desecration Demons away game 2. Game 3 I resolved an Assemble the Legion alongside a Xenagos, the Reveler, 1 for 1 that shit black!

Rd 3 - R/W - 0-2

I got pummeled plain and simple. I couldn't draw a fast hand and he came out scorching. Toil / Trouble hit for 5 and 6 on turn 3 both games.

Rd 4 - Rakdos Conrol - 2-1

Grindy games but my splash for white paid off. He had tons of removal but lacked threats to take over the board.

Rd 5 - Esper Control - 2-0

I kept terrible slow hands and still got there. If you don't know by now Monsters obliterates U/W/x Control. My winning streak against control in competitive play is at 16 matches.

TOP 8

Quarter Finals - Mono-Blue Devotion - 0-2

My deck just pooped out and didn't give me any good hands or draws. He seemed like an experienced pilot and took advantage. Never saw any of my sideboard in game 2. Can't win them all.

Loved the white splash and so did everyone else. I'm going to give my land choices a serious look over this week and get it perfect for the next tourney. Two top 8's this weekend is nice but I really felt I could've taken one of them.

Update 2

ExileThis, 11 years ago

I reduced the basic lands, but added some mana-producing artifacts and Gruul lands to give specific mana. There are more weenie-type creatures, small mana producers and green ramp.

Changing to INSTANT!!!!!1!

Stupendous, 11 years ago

So I got rid of the Gather the Townsfolk and Cruel Edict, simply because they are not playable at instant speed which really gives this deck sustain.

Instead I took Geth's Verdict and Raise the Alarm

In addition i made the whole deck a lot more competetive. Including Dark Confidant for card draw and Inquisition of Kozilek / Thoughtseize against anything bad

Fixed the Manabase (at least in my opinion) and got a Sideboard which is in no way or shape finished.

needs a bit of help for the skull cracks and the rakdos returns out there any ideas?

Mistcutter

roytekker, 11 years ago

Updated amount of Mistcutter Hydra in sideboard. Still considering main boarding 2x.

new minotaur!

dpeworch, 11 years ago

Added the new one drop minotaur, Gnarled Scarhide. Moved Oracle of Bones to the sideboard with a couple of the burn spells. Not positive yet if they were the best cards to take out.

Tokens are a Thing Right?

Haxnslash, 11 years ago

I sort of changed the deck... a lot... like a lot a lot. I don't know how well this will work out but I guess it could be a thing. Feed back is appreciated so go ahead and tell me if this sucks or if it's good.

FNM (4/4/14)

ReidSchuerman, 11 years ago

2-3 Match 1 was against R/G Monsters. Game one I one with the perfect opening hand an did 12 damage with a MAster and swung in next turn for the kill. Game 2 he just ramped faster then me and smashed my face. Game three was the same as game 2. (1-2) Match 2 was 5 color Thassa. Friend of mine was homebrewing an interesting 5 color control deck with thassa and master for the win. It went pretty quickly to me. (2-0) Match 3 was against U/W control. That was fun. Just countered everything then beat me down with n aetherling that I just couldn't stop. (0-2) Match 4: Janky mono Black build. Not enought removal but a lot of chump blockers. Just sat a built board state both games cause I couldn't draw a master. Finally drew one and dealt 46 damage straight to the face because of purphoros. (2-0) Match 5: Played an actually mono black build. Just to much removal and I ended up loosing and scooping in game 2 because I was ready to leave. (0-2)

Deck Tech With MTGNerdsUnited!!

GoldGhost012, 11 years ago

Good news! All Hail Sedge Scorpion, the Storm Crow of Theros! was featured on Dalektable's MTGNerdsUnited Youtube channel as a deck tech and a match against one of his decks! Go here to see our gameplay and here to see Dalektable's deck tech.

I've also decided to move the 3 Arbor Colossus in the side to the main. They provide as devotion as Worldspine Wurm, much easier to cast, and your opponent better have a kill spell for it, saving our mana dorks from destruction; that can really cripple us. Nylea, God of the Hunt will move to the side for matches against other stompy decks and Worldspine Wurms will be dropped completely... Sorry wormies! Also adding another Fog and Fade into Antiquity.

The deck is now legal :-/

ExileThis, 11 years ago

I made this deck with knowledge of EDH/commander. But I was stupid on that fateful day (yesterday) For reasons unknown, the rule of 100-Cards-Max-And-Min was ignored, and I magically added black and white cards to the fray. Now the deck is trimmed. 100 cards and a rare non-Gruul G/R. Enjoy, and please leave feedback.

The First Pass

justnthrguy, 11 years ago

I built the deck and goldfished with it a few times to get a feel for how it plays out. My initial impressions are that the following cards are weak:

Coat of Arms
Fecundity
Frontier Guide
Oran-Rief, the Vastwood
Staff of Domination - cut for being 'unfun'

Close the Definitive Version

JakeHarlow, 11 years ago

Well, I've learned a lot of lessons. After a lengthy period of agonized indecision, I had to cut out Guttersnipe, despite the fact that he is amazing. I had to increase the land count to 22, adding a playset of Mutavault that is quickly becoming a requirement for competitive standard. The sideboard has been rounded out. I will play the deck with this board and we will see how it works. Thanks to everyone for their kind suggestions and counsel. I'll be sure to make an FNM update when I get an opportunity to do so.
