So I was going through my collection I have stashed away, and I find a Fallen Empires [Swords to Plowshares]. I price it and it's worth about $3.00 according to TCG. So curiosity gets the best of me, and I start going through every card. Turns out I have almost of $100.00 worth of money cards I didn't realize I had. So anyone else have a similar story? I'd like to hear what gems you didn't know you had.

When I moved back to my hometown a couple years ago, my kids had decided to begin playing MtG which brought me back into the game after 10+ yrs away. A friend of mine had recently quit, but still had a few boxes (totalling roughly 20,000 cards) of commons/uncommons with a few rares hiding here and there (as well as a couple hundred Zen full art lands) and he gave them to me so we would have some cards to throw some decks together. I've found a few gems in there, such as Aven Mindcensor and Serum Visions. There were a few more that I can't recall at the moment and could still be some that I haven't discovered yet being that I haven't gone through them in quite some time.

One thing to note...you may want to double check the printing on that Swords to Plowshares as it wasn't printed in Fallen Empires. I'd be willing to bet Ice Age is likely the set yours is from.

Yeah your right ljs54321. That Swords to Plowshares is Ice Age. I don't know why I said Fallen Empires for. Thanks for correcting me. Did you really get a boxes with a couple hundred ZEN full art lands? Holy crap wow!

Nowadays I don't bother trying to spec on rares in a new set, as many of the playable commons and uncommons are more played. An example being the fact that I bought a set of Stoke the Flames for .50 the day of the set release, and they then jumped to over $4! Roast, Anticipate, and Rending Volley are the ones to get foils of while they're still cheap and new.

But more in line with the original post, my buddy got out of magic and sold most of his rares in a lot on craigslist, then just gave me a 5000 count box of commons and uncommons. Hidden among that box were a few shocklands and 2 Leyline of Sanctity among other valuable commons and uncommons (like a bunch of Gitaxian Probes) and Zendikar full-arts. And I didn't need to pay anything for them! :)

A friend let me have part of his collection that he couldn't sell off and I got a Sliver Legion, 3x Dryad Arbor, Magus of the Moon, Path to Exile, and Batterskull, among other things.

Awhile back when I was at my LGS, I bought a bunch of cards, sleeves, and deck boxes, so I brought my cards into the store to sort through them and get them sleeved. I had a stack of cards sitting on the table, and on top of them was a Wasteland. My friend who works at the LGS saw it, looked at me, said "You should be more careful with that card, it's worth about $100." I thought he was kidding me until I looked it up. I just had it sitting with all the rest of my Legacy nonbasics and never thought anything of it because I don't play Legacy.

One of my coworkers used to own a comic shop in Chicago, and he got into M:TG from that, but he quit playing several years back. He found out that I play, so he brought in all the cards he had left, which he just wanted to get rid of. Among all of those cards were several $3 rares, about 5 playsets of Spectral Procession, a Scapeshift, and a Vendilion Clique. I told him that there were a few valuable cards in there and asked him if he wanted them back but he told me I could keep them.

I recently joined PucaTrade, and decided to go through my old cards to see if any were worth trading. (Eventually, I am just going to have all my cards on there.)

My reason for joining was to trade for some cards I need for my first Legacy deck (David McDarby's Veteran Walkers).

In my old forgotten about cards, I came across a Cabal Therapy a ~$12.00 uncommon... which happens to be one of the cards I need a playset of for the deck. - One less card to grab. - I've since gotten the other 3... I only need 2x Jace, the Mind Sculptor and a few sideboard cards.

I also cam across a few other value cards I had previously overlooked. - Revised Birds of Paradise, Foil Qasali Pridemage, and a few others... plus a number of Modern/Legacy Staples including over 20 Lightning Bolts of various sets, and a dozen or so Brainstorm

The first box of Magic cards I bought had like 2 full sets of ALL the commons and uncommons Merfolk Modern runs from Lorwyn and the other nearby sets. I paid $35 bucks for the entire box of 5000 cards. Unfortunately I decided I'd rather play elves (there were a ton of Imperious Perfect etc as well) and gave all the merfolk to a friend because his favorite color was blue, and he ended up selling them off a few months later.

I was going through my friend's collection last night. Found like 8 Shadowborn Apostle, 2 Isochron Scepter, a Counterspell, and 2 Lightning Bolt among many other cards worth more than a dollar each. Sadly, I am an honest person and told him instead of trying to have him give me "worthless" commons and uncommons.

MasterThief hey nothing wrong with being an honest person. Far too many players out there who try and screw others out of cards that are worth something. I see it far too often sadly. I tip my hat to you.

I share a cumulative jank commons and uncommons box with a few other players. We have a "finders keepers" rule. I was pretty excited when I found Forked Bolt the other day. I don't really know why, it's not that expensive. But still!
