Rakdos - Scrapper Aggro (Core 2019 Standard)

Standard* Aggro Artifact BR (Rakdos) Burn Combo Tribal

Sideboard

Artifact aggro deck that revolves heavily around using combat tracks to trample through defense. Since all of your artifact creatures have some way of extracting extra value after or during their death, suicidal play where you force the opponent to lose creatures in 1 for 1 exchanges is often rewarded. The miracle win revolves around using either Insult or Thud in combination with with a combat trick to multiply your damage for the last shot. Attaching the final combo shot to a large body like Heart of Kiran allows for anywhere from 14-32 damage.

Primary Win Condition

Overwhelm the opponent with removal spells like Unlicensed Disintegration , combat tricks like Built to Smash and Invigorated Rampage and card advantage generated via Bomat Courier , Scrapheap Scrounger and Scrap Trawler interactions.

Example: Assume all three creatures are on the field (Bomat Courier on turn 1, Scrapheap Scrounger on turn 3, Scrap Trawler on third 4.)

Continuously play combat tricks like Built to Smash and removal spells like Unlicensed Disintegration and Shock whenever opponent tries to block Bomat Courier . Eventually bigger threats like Hazoret the Fervent will force your opponent to ignore Bomat. When you're ready, in this example by turn 4, you sacrifice Bomat Courier to draw a new hand. Next get your Scrapheap Scrounger killed and Scrap Trawler will bring Bomat Courier back from the graveyard to keep building card advantage. Send in Scrap Trawler for a suicide run by playing Invigorated Rampaged so your opponent is more likely to block. If Scrap Trawler dies in the exchange you get back Scrapheap Scrounger and play it again. Now if the opponent tries to kill Scrapheap Scrounger it can use the Scrap Trawler in the graveyard to return to the battlefield. The best way to keep Scrap Trawler safe until you're ready for it to die is to crew Heart of Kiran with it.

In this example 1 Bomat Courier has hit the battlefield two times. 1 Scrapheap Scrounger has hit the battlefield three times. 1 Scrap Trawler has hit the battlefield one time. You just played 3 suicidal creatures 6 times. Trample combat tricks should help guarantee some of the opponent's creatures go down during combat. In the worst case you can use a Shock to finish a creature off after combat.

Secondary Win Condition:

Direct damage inflicted to the opponent via Shock , Unlicensed Disintegration , Injury , Thud , Hazoret the Fervent and Chandra, Torch of Defiance .

Tertiary (Flashiest) Win Condition:

A combo shot using Built to Smash + Thud or Invigorated Rampage + Thud to trample through defense then deal damage twice over. If attached to body like Heart of Kiran this is almost a guaranteed kill. Alternatively a combo like Insult + Built to Smash will have the same effect.

Example: Scrapheap Scrounger and Syndicate Trafficker are on the field. Play Insult . Attack for 6 damage, which will be doubled to 12 if the opponent is hit directly. Assume Scrounger and Trafficker are both blocked by 2/2 creatures. Cast Invigorated Rampage giving both Scrapheap and Syndicate Trafficker +2 +0 and Trample. 6 damage still gets through, which is then doubled to 12 damage by Insult.

Example: Attack with Heart of Kiran on turn 3 for 4 damage. Attack again on turn 4, use Built to Smash to deal 7 damage. Use Thud to deal another 7 damage. Assuming you played a Shock on turn 1 that's a lethal 20 damage delivered via a flying body.

Example: In a dream scenario you combine Built to Smash + Insult + Thud or Insult + Invigorated Rampage + Thud . With this combo even an unblocked 1/1 Bomat Courier can deal 16 damage in one turn with 5 Mana. Insult is played. Several creatures attack but are blocked. Bomat breaks through for 1 damage. Built to Smash is played to make Bomat a 4/4. 4 damage dealt is multiplied to 8 damage. Sacrifice Bomat to Thud to deal another 4 damage multipled to 8 damage. You just dealt 16 damage with a 1/1.

Updates Add

Playing with friends the deck seems very consistent and able to avoid running out of steam while piling on the aggro.

The core deck seems solid to me but I'm lacking ideas for the sideboard. Goblin Chainwhirler has proven to be a lifesaver when Scrap Trawler loses its effectiveness thanks to graveyard hate.

That's the only sideboard piece I have a strong opinion on.
