This is my personal take on Blue/White Heroic
I wanted to design this deck to punish my meta. I have been in and out of standard for the past couple of years. Haven't found a deck that sits well with my interests for awhile.
I have been pondering the idea of Heroic for some time now trying to decide if I want to take the dive. After seeing Tom Ross' list take over the meta in his recent tournament #basicallycawblade I sat down and began brewing once more.
This deck is heavily inspired by Tom Ross' idea with a few minor changes. First off let's discuss why the deck has been breaking through.
Heroic has always been on the back burner waiting for a time to shine. It was designed with a fantastic idea of taking one strong creature and making them your game plan Battlewise Hoplite
While this idea is cool on paper it runs into multiple issues. First of all investing all of your resources on one creature leaves you open to 2/3 for ones. You can play that amazing Tormented Hero and slap an Ordeal of Heliod and a Sunbond and rush head first hoping to trigger a huge turn out with one creature. But then you sadly run into a doom blade.
Luckily this meta is stuck dealing with the loss of two mana removal letting us have that one extra turn to protect or fantastic little beat stick.
Or the second problem lies in the fact that you can do the same thing and be facing a lone polukranos and have no way of getting around this monster.
Enter Heliod's Pilgrim. Tom Ross showed us the beauty of this Stoneforge Mystic-esque creature that allows to fetch the perfect enchantment for the perfect situation.
Finally our Heros have a time to shine.
Let's discuss the changes shall we.
Daxos of Meletis - While I admit I am a little bias in my opinion of Daxos as I have always wanted him to have the spot light. Well finally in the deck he can. He is perfectly situated against such an aggressive meta. He is resilient, He keeps the damage going through against a High power board, and he keeps us staying afloat with our life totals. I have always had a lust for stealing my opponents spells and cloning their creatures. This brings me to.....
Artisan of Forms - This little beauty is exactly what I wanted it to be. A universal creature that handles fire with fire. Since we are a voltron-esque deck we want to have creatures that get more powerful when we target them. Keeping the flow while we continue to curve out. Nothing is more fun than copying an opposing Goblin Rabblemaster and having a goblin war. The fun count doubles when you can slap on an Ephara's Enlightment or Aqueous Form to our newly accrued Rabble friend.
While we have a cool suite of creatures we also have a cool suite of spells that make this creatures shine
Ordeal of Thassa - I'm not going to lie. This deck would fall in the dust if this fantastic card advantage engine was not around. This allows us to curve our small creatures into giant card advantage engines.
Gods Willing and Feat of Resistance Most of the removal in this meta is in the three mana category. Namely Hero's Downfall, Jeskai Charm, Abzan Charm. Notice anything about those last two charms? They get around indestructibility. This means that in order to get around those spells we need to have a way to give our creatures protection.
Aqueous Form, Ordeal of Heliod, Ephara's Enlightenment, and Singing Bell Strike - It is always nice to have the right tool for the right job and Heliod's Pilgrim allows to get away with only running one of each of these tools.
The sideboard is pretty standard with one exception Mortal Obstinacy. This card is specifically for answering the all around obnoxious Jeskai Ascendancy.
