Maybeboard

I am making a budgety version of this deck since I pulled 2 Bolas's over prerelease weekend. By budget I mostly mean lands and probably Fatal Push since I still don't have a playset. Bolas should be the only real 'expensive' card in this deck, especially since a lot of the sideboard is easy to get/cheap and pretty much all the other cards are <1$ save for the premium board clears. This deck is 'the dream' if I had the cash for the lands.

Ramp out Nicol Bolas, God-Pharaoh with improvise and gum up the board with servos and board clear. +2 Bolas and keep playing their cards against them / destroying their hand.

  • If they can answer your Bolas just improvise out another one with Inspiring Santuary.
  • Use Prophetic Prisms to help dig for lands/Bolas/removal.
  • Servo Schematic let's you get out a chumper and also tap for Improvise, a flexible survival and ramp piece.
  • Improvising out you token generators is an easy way to gum up the board to give you time until you have board clear/Bolas mana. Also Whirler Virtuoso on T3 isnt hard to pull off and giving you some chumps. Maverick Thopterist T3 is also ideal if you get a great hand.
  • Aether Hub / Spire of Industry for mana fixing. I am sure the land base could be better but I dont have many of the 'good' dual lands so I am just guessing on how the expensive ones go together.
  • Sweltering Suns can cycle in the late game and is also just decent in the meta right now with low toughness creatures.
  • Bontu's Last Reckoning is a 'get out of jail free' wrath. If you have Bolas out you still keep him and can +2 for a free spell when you are tapped out so the drawback of not untapping lands isn't nearly as bad.
  • Play a lot of heavy board clear because once Bolas is out we want the game to be all about him. Everything else is just for gumming up the board/ramping out Bolas with improvise. You get a slow start but with the amount of board clear by turn 4-5 (worst case 3) you can wipe. Engulf the Shore is tentative, but if you can bounce their board then +1 Bolas to make them discard 2 you essentially get removal and tempo. Inspiring Sanctuary not only lets you ramp out Bolas really fast, but also lets you get out your board clears super fast if you need it.

The Ramp- T1: Land- T2: Land -> Servo Schematic- T3: Land -> Inspiring Sanctuary- T4: Land -> Maverick Thopterist / Whirler Virtuoso- T5: Land -> Nicol Bolas, God-Pharaoh

It is unlikely you can Improvise ramp into Bolas completely unanswered, so you slowly build up artifacts and Creatures that generate artifact tokens so you can keep the board gummed up/wipe it for cheap and then get Bolas out to start getting free stuff from your opponent/doing damage to the face/threats. Once you get to the late game you can play another Bolas for super cheap with the amount of artifacts you will have out for improvise. Worse comes to worse multiple copies of Whirler Virtuoso and Maverick Thopterist can win games on their own if left unanswered against combo decks.

Possible Sideboard

  • Negate / Other counterspells against control if Bolas is getting stuffed.
  • Artifact destruction, this deck will get crushed by vehicles without artifact removal.
  • Cheap removal like 2 copies of Magma Spray/Harnessed Lightning for the inevitable aggro/zombie/RG matchups. Although I am not sure if Grixis has any decent artifact removal.-Elder Deep-Fiend can help against mid range by tapping down opponents creatures/land until you can play hard board clear.
  • Unlicensed Disintegration synergizes well with the artifacts and is just decent removal.
  • Never / Return is played mostly for the Never and is great against a lot of threats.

Maybeboard- Herald of Anguish is just a decent finisher that would synergize with Bolas's discard.- Cultivator's Caravan, good ramp card and vehicle for thopters to crew.- Skysovereign Flagship, removal and thopters can fly it.- Tezzeret the Schemer, Ramp him out and generate artifacts that give you mana and you can improvise with. The synergy potential is huge but I am not sure about him because Ive never had a chance to play him.
