Legacy Mill Mono-Blue

Description

This is a friend's deck. He told me he wanted to refine his mill deck more, so I told him I would just do it on my tappedout account. Here is the finished result. Suggestions please.

Updates

60 cards — July 8, 2012

I finally managed to bring the deck size down to 60, but I have 12 cards in my maybeboard and I need help deciding if they belong in this deck.

Thanks

Traumatize is highly over-rated and becomes less effective over just plain old Jace, Memory Adept .

Decimator Web is a horrible, horrible card.

Archive Trap and Ghost Quarter is a good combo to use.

Hedron Crab is the best milling one drop out there, this guy should net you an easy 9-12 cards off their deck before you chump block with him.

I'd consider splashing black for Glimpse the Unthinkable and Mind Funeral

card:Jace's Archivist can usually be a game winner, force them to draw cards that they don't have, with a Reliquary Tower and Howling Mine this can get kind of crazy.

Just food for thought, you can check out my U/B mill deck here: deck:shredded-memories

Always food for thought: Defense. The deck needs it. I have a Phoenix deck and it just blasted through. Look into splashing white in with wall of denial.

July 3, 2012 7:20 p.m.

I agree with pheonix_222. Splash black for Mind Funeral , Glimpse the Unthinkable , and then for kill spells and such, like Vampire Nighthawk , Doom Blade , and Go for the Throat .

Why are you running Evolving Wilds ? The only thing you can fetch with them are islands, and having them come in tapped does very little for you other than giving the extra landfall, 3 extra milling isn't worth slowing yourself down a turn in my opinion. If you like the synergy run with it, but you could always just run an extra 4 islands. 28 lands is also a lot, even for a control deck, I'd run 25 at the most, 24 is more than enough. You could have a set of Wall of Frost to deter aggro decks instead, siding in Wall of Air when you need the flying.

July 3, 2012 8:19 p.m.

Well if he does end up splashing black in the Evolving Wilds would be needed. Also, if you just let four Wilds sit until you have like, three Hedron Crab s out, then sac them all, 12 cards for each crab, times 3, would be 36 cards. However, I do know that is a very risky and slightly bad move

Thanks for the replies. Hard choices. What about Darksteel Myr for defense or would Wall of Ice be better?

As for the Hedron Crab - Evolving Wilds combo. If there was one Hedron crab on and you played an evolving wilds and sacrificed it for another land, would that be 6 cards discarded?

July 3, 2012 9 p.m.

Yes. Whenever a land enters the battlefield. Doesn't matter where. Play Evolving Wilds triggers Hedron Crab . When you sacrifice WIlds and search your deck for a land, it enters the battlefield, triggering Hedron Crab again.

July 3, 2012 9:33 p.m.

OwnedbyCow says... #9

Wow, thats a win within itself. lol. I know it will probably never happen, but if you had 4 Hedron Crab and played 4 Evolving Wilds , that is 96 cards discarded. That actually makes me want to run an extra 2 similar cards to Evolving Wilds . Is there anything that I should definitely remove? I know some stuff works in combos well, but cards such as Thought Scour seem underpowered.

July 3, 2012 9:53 p.m.

Well, unless you had something like Fastbond , you could only drop one Evolving Wilds per turn. After the fourth turn with a single crab out, that'll be 12 cards. wait til the other 3 Hedron Crab s are out then sac all four WIlds. Four Islands will enter the battlefield, triggering all four Crabs four times. 4 x 4 = 16 x 3 = 48

July 3, 2012 10 p.m.

OwnedbyCow says... #11

I know, I didn't specify what I meant. But you have 4 of the Hedron crabs then one of the Evolving Wilds per turn. so 96 cards total if it works out right. I know the likelihood of this happening is very low, but anything discard seems great for this deck. Fastbond seems good but not for this deck. Would you need a lot heals to run that card? I have 3 high mana decks I have built on here that it might help, but also hurt. deck:im-about-to-run-you-over

If you are set on including some fetch lands you might want to consider Misty Rainforest or Scalding Tarn . Does exactly what Evolving Wilds and Terramorphic Expanse do, except the Island will come in untapped. These cards can also fetch shock lands if you end up splashing black like Watery Grave as they are both land types at the same time. 3 health seems like a lot if you want it to come in untapped, but this is still a very versatile land base and is preferable (and a lot more expensive) to Evolving Wilds .

I also just noticed now that as of this post your deck is 77 cards, I personally never play with a deck with more that 60 cards, I know it can be tough to narrow down your choices to 60, but anything more than that I find becomes horribly inconsistent, for a kitchen counter casual game it probably doesn't matter too much, but if you want the deck to start winning games more often you should definitely try to thin it out. The less cards you have to draw from the more chances you have of drawing the card you really need.

July 4, 2012 3:26 a.m.

OwnedbyCow says... #13

Thanks, I will consider those lands over the Evolving Wilds . They seem pretty good, but I have seen their prices. :/... Is there anything that you think should be removed? I can't bring myself to remove anything without thinking that I am hurting the deck.

July 4, 2012 3:39 a.m.

pheonix_222 says... #14

well, once you are down to 60 cards, 24 lands is acceptable, so there's 4 cards not needed.

Merfolk Mesmerist doesn't really seem worth it IMO.

Jace Beleren isn't as good as Jace, Memory Adept in milling decks I find.

Curse of the Bloody Tome also is rather slow.

Crystal Ball might have a place in the deck, but Howling Mine kind of does it's job.

Mind Spring shouldn't really be necessary with Howling Mine on the field, but has great synergy with card:Jace's Erasure.

Like I said Traumatize is kind of overrated, If you like it though then keep it.

Dream Twist i just a worse Tome Scour in my opinion.

Another card for consideration:

Consecrated Sphinx - Combos well with card:Jace's Erasure and card:Jace's Archivist to basically deck them in one combo, Note Consecrated Sphinx 's text says you 'may' this prevents you from awkwardly decking yourself. Reliquary Tower becomes more useful at this point.

July 4, 2012 3:51 a.m.

OwnedbyCow says... #15

Thanks for the post.

Okay so remove these:Merfolk Mesmerist -Jace Beleren and replace him with another Jace, Memory Adept -Curse of the Bloody Tome -Dream Twist -

I'm unsure about these:Crystal Ball -Mind Spring -Traumatize Should I just remove it and be done with it? It seems good if you can get it early.

Consecrated Sphinx looks like it should work well in this deck, but no more than 2... right?

July 4, 2012 4:04 a.m.

pheonix_222 says... #16

depends on how much you want to make sure you have one to play.2 or 3 sounds about right.

July 4, 2012 4:15 a.m.

OwnedbyCow says... #17

Thanks for the help. I have got it down to 67 now. I think 3 of the Consecrated Sphinx would work well. What about the Lore Broker ?

July 4, 2012 4:22 a.m.

pheonix_222 says... #18

might have some synergy with Consecrated Sphinx and card:Jace's Erasure, but I would think about axing it, I prefer Merfolk Looter to deny my opponent the benefit but Lore Broker might actually be the better pick for this deck.

July 4, 2012 4:30 a.m.

OwnedbyCow says... #19

Yeah that was why I didn't want to remove it. It seems close to Merfolk Mesmerist in milling power though. Food for though though. I have a lot to think about now..How often does Traumatize get used so that it was actually worth having?

July 4, 2012 4:39 a.m.

pheonix_222 says... #20

Traumatize is only really good the first time you cast it. your opponent should have 53 cards in their deck after drawing their initial hand, then by the time you cast Traumatize they've drawn at least another 5 cards maybe more with Lore Broker and Howling Mine . Not to mention you've probably milled them for at least 10-15 by turn 5.

Realistically, at most you'll mill them for 24. Though you are more likely going to mill them for 15-10 or even less.

This is why Mind Funeral and Glimpse the Unthinkable are worth it. cheap and effective.

HEY! i have a very well refined mono blue mill deck! the idea is that making your opponent draw is part of mill. with cards like Howling Mine (which you have) and Kami of the Crescent Moon (which i strongly recommend in this deck because its basically a howling mine 1/3 creature), you can make them draw while you use card:Jace's Erasure to mill them down. when you draw that much you get big hands and big hands means big mills every turn with Dreamborn Muse even if you do mill yourself its worth it! but you'll need some big defenders to hold off aggressive decks: That means card:Jace's Phantasm a 5/5 for 1 in mill decks, or a Mindshrieker , which can be a powerful creature with the right mana usage. Brainstorm instead of Tome Scour ? would work with the card:Jace's Erasure

July 13, 2012 1:33 a.m.

OwnedbyCow says... #25

Oh nice. That's a great combo card. That's a possibility of 12 cards in a one mana card.

Yes, pluss you get a little draw power, like your deck btw.

Mind Sculpt is a lovely card for any mill deck in my opinion

July 17, 2012 11:55 p.m.

OwnedbyCow says... #28

Good Idea, thanks. I am thinking about adding in an Isochron Scepter to keep reusing mill cards such as that one.

July 18, 2012 12:02 a.m.

ShiltonCDXX says... #29

my god that would be nasty infinite mill, seven cards at a time XD

July 18, 2012 12:03 a.m.

OwnedbyCow says... #30

My thoughts exactly xD. Along with all of the other milling that takes place - Nasty.

lol... so much milling muah-ha-ha I have so much fun with decks like that, i remember the first time my friend helped me put together my first blue control deck, I couldn't believe how much easier the match felt, I was hooked after that. It's always one of the first decks i make when i get cards.

July 18, 2012 12:22 a.m.

I would strongly suggest mainboarding Surgical Extraction for Emrakul, the Aeons Torn and other such creatures that shuffle the graveyard back into the library. Kinda hoses this deck.

July 21, 2012 12:49 a.m.

dende333 says... #33

you can also check Fog Bank as defender. but i don't know if it's necessary for the early game.

i would also add black because of Mind Funeral and Glimpse the Unthinkable .

July 21, 2012 11:05 a.m.

I concur with dende333 in regards to splashing black for Mind Funeral and Glimpse the Unthinkable . Potent mill cards. Much better than Increasing Confusion in the early game.

Also, if you run Archive Trap , mainboarding a few Ghost Quarter is a must.

I have a similar deck in Modern, which needs some tweaking, but it's: Fuhget About It
