DTK Standard (Collecting the Foremost Company)

Standard* Five Color

Malaz

Sideboard

My Mardu deck wasn't cutting it for me at FNM the last few weeks, and I had most of the cards needed to make a Collected Company deck similar to Yohan Dudognon's. I never use the exact same deck as one I've found online; I enjoy experimenting with different builds, and will often attempt to play with cards I have rather than buy new ones.

The first version was 4-colored, and differed in that I cut the mainboard Elspeth and the Fleecemane Lions in favor of 3x Arashin Foremost and 2x Yasova Dragonclaw (who happens to be a warrior).

Heir of the Wilds is a warrior, and replaced Seeker of the Way (also a warrior). So is Goblin Rabblemaster. And you know who else? Savage Knuckleblade. Using Collected Company to snag a Foremost and give an attacker or blocker double strike is pretty awesome.

I went 2-2 using this build, and decided it needs further tinkering. First, the double white of the Arashin Foremost necessitated playing Sylvan Caryatid over Rattleclaw Mystic. I'm absolutely fine with this change, as changing from the Lions to the Foremost made this deck a little bit slower. Caryatid's great against early-game, and helps with mana fixing. Yasova wasn't really as good as I'd hoped, so she got the axe as well. With the Caryatids and the modification of the mana base, I cut a Mantis Rider in favor of Anafenza, the Foremost, with an additional copy in the sideboard.

I was also not terribly thrilled with Stoke the Flames, so I removed it in favor of another Valorous Stance. Trimming the creatures from 23 to 22 left me with three spots to experiment with Anticipate, a card I like quite a bit.

The sideboard needed total adjustment after this. In addition to the second Anafenza, Arashin Cleric was cut in favor of Minister of Pain, as both Master of Waves and Hornet Queen both see a lot of play at my LGS. I kept a third Ojutai's Command because I like the fact that it overlaps with Collected Company's CMC, I kept Disdainful Stroke since it's just good, and elected to run Swan Song over Negate.

Updates Add

The 5-color version performed abysmally, mostly because the sheer number of tri-lands meant that I was consistently behind and playing catch-up rather than casting Collected Company and winning. In addition to cutting black from the deck and modifying the mana base, I decided to modify the creatures being played to improve the deck against aggro (which there is a lot of in my local meta).

Creatures:
-2 Anafenza, the Foremost (1 mainboard, 1 sideboard)
-3 Minister of Pain (Sideboard)
-3 Heir of the Wilds (Mainboard)
-3 Arashin Foremost (Mainboard)
-2 Hornet Nest (Sideboard)
+2 Hornet Nest (Mainboard)
+3 Arashin Cleric (Sideboard)
+1 Mantis Rider (Mainboard)
+4 Courser of Kruphix

Basically, I concluded that Arashin Foremost was sweet, but not consistent enough to justify the strain it added to the mana requirements of the deck. Mantis Rider is amazing, so I went back to 4, and added the Coursers in order to give me an edge in the timing of my Collected Company and as part of an anti-aggro leaning in the deck that also explains the mainboard presence of two Hornet Nests. The clerics returned to the sideboard in place of the ministers. This, combined with the modifications made to the sideboard, made the deck more midrangey, so I'm just going to treat it as a new deck and describe it elsewhere.
