Biogenic Upgrade

Sorcery

Distribute three +1/+1 counters among one, two or three target creatures, then double the number of +1/+1 counters on each of those creatures.

@GorramScoundrel

Thanks so much for commenting! Solidarity of Heroes should definitely make it into this deck. It being an instant opens up a lot of powerful trick plays. I'll probably cut Biogenic Upgrade to make room. As for the other three, they don't quite stack up to Solidarity.

The main reason is that the deck isn't really aiming to make one large creature the same way Skullbriar does. The goal is to get counters spread across my creatures so that they can trigger my Commanders when they die. This does usually end up with one or two creatures getting very large when the dust settles. At that point they're typically big enough to do the job.

Thanks again for the recommendations!

Skullbriar is the commander so you can have it relocate to your command zone should he die/be exile/return to hand. The only place that makes his counters dissapear is hand and library.

Dragonscale Boon instant 2 +1counters untap. Can create suprise blocker. Evolution Sage land etb proliferate which is choose any number of things add an additional counter of whatever they have.

Smell Fear new removal option.

Reyhan, Last of the Abzan highly suggest this. Turns anything into a threat with your commander dying.

Solidarity of Heroes double counters for a potential Instant speed kill out of no where.

Biogenic Upgrade double counters after adding 3.

Branching Evolution counters doubler

Heroic Intervention protection

Fight Rigging free spell + counter per turn.

Hydra's Growth double counters

Primordial Hydra 2ndary threat if left alone. Synergies well.

Realizing now I didn't suggest any evasion. Some sort of evasion could go a long way. Trailblazer's Boots is the best example. Can't be blocked if your opponent has a nonbasic land. Essentially unblockable every time.

Evil idea

Tainted Strike infect kill someone. Can target opponents creatures too to surprise both and kill someone.

Glistening Oil infect.

Phyresis infect.

Awesome! I'm trying to do a moooostly Ravnican-only cards Niv deck and noticed the only snergy between the 10 very distinct guilds is going for combat damage (Grull, Boros, Rakdos... can't really play my usual Izzet burst damage backstab way) and the number of keywords that give +1/+1 counters. It started off as a homeage to the Dragon's Maze with the maze runners, maze elementals, and then just all 10 Guildmages, all 10 Guildcharms... was a mess even with fun 'multicolor love' cards from off-plane helping out Dragon's Maze (Niv-Mizzet Reborn). Then I realized I could use Proliferate thanks to all the War of the Spark cards to loosely tie them all together with Filibuster Counters, Loyalty, etc.Dragon's Maze (Niv-Mizzet Reborn) with +1/+1. I didn't seeBiogenic Upgrade - great find. If you extend Ravnican-Sets out to all cards that take place on the plane General Ferrous Rokiric is pretty neat. I'm sure there are other great Ravnican cards hidden amoung the many coresets etc. that despite my dedication to learning Gatherer's search code have evaded me.

Ramp. X and its reusable. Mana Bloom

Spark Double gives another Zaxara and you make two hydras per spell. Helm of the Host just gets stupid

I would cut Biogenic Upgrade (six mana X spell would give you more counters than that).

Personally, I think voltron strategies are some of the most cost effective for a beginning budget player.

A commander like Skullbriar, the Walking Grave can be tuned to be competitive at any table and does especially well in duels.

A lot of his best cards like Evolutionary Escalation Feast on the Fallen Hydra's Growth Ordeal of Nylea Biogenic UpgradeSoul's Might Ring of Kalonia FireshriekerWinding Constrictor Corpsejack Menace and many others are cheap.

My deck is not budget, but you could replace the most expensive 30 cards with budget friendly alternatives and still have a deck that stomps most tables. https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/15-09-20-skullbriar-the-walking-grave/

Yes, Biogenic Upgrade is excellent, often the surprise win from nowhere. I have not had the opportunity to play with The Ozolith yet, but don't know if it is needed. Also, I might misunderstand the rulings of The Ozolith. I interpret it as a mandatory move of all the counters to the Ozolith if Skullbriar, the Walking Grave leaves the battlefield, which I don't want to happen.

Gladehart Cavalry and Sandsteppe Mastodon don't seem to be doing a lot for you. In low budget games grind is the name of the game and you're severely lacking in draw power. Even something simple like Lead the Stampede can push you ahead in the game. Camaraderie is likely 10x better than either Biogenic Upgrade or Incremental Growth.

Other options include Duskwatch Recruiter  Flip, Vivien's Grizzly. Mana outlets like this help you pull ahead when everyone else has either dumped their hands.

Evolutionary Escalation can also easily replace any or your more synergy based +1/+1 counter generators and your commander has a super secret mode of stealing the counters from the opponent's creature.

Evolving Wilds and Terramorphic Expanse are also suspiciously missing.
