I'm sure most of us are guilty of making profit at some other guy's expense.

No. And its wrong to even put this on the forums of such a greatly respected website and slander both the TappedOut and Magic community. If you think it is okay to steal then that must be why you posted this...

I think you misunderstand. I'm merely trying to start up a discussion based on personal experience in trading to hear some great trade stories others can tell. May it be buying someone's box of cards for $5 and finding an card:Umezawa's Jitte or trading someone a Wurmcoil Engine for a Sword of Feast and Famine . I fear I may have phrased the thread poorly and for that I apologise for the misunderstanding.

I took my 11 year old brother to the local game shop, he bought a $5 box of commons/uncommons. The box contained five card:Sensei's Divining Tops. I traded him some crappy rares for four of them.

You, permhole96, are an asshole.

It pisses me off when people intentionally rip someone off.

Yes, I get some good deals sometimes like when I traded a stack of junk rares for 4x City of Traitors and 4x Wasteland , and an Oath of Druids . In my defense I told the guy his cards were worth tons more than mine and to feel free to go through my trade binder and pick out some more cards. He told me that he didn't mind and that what he chose was all he was interested in and he didn't care about the others or the value of them. He was happy, I was happy, and if I didn't pick them up someone else would have.

I don't see anything wrong with making a good deal as long as both parties know the price of the cards. Yes, I think you should have an idea of what cards are worth but most of the time, it's a new player that gets screwed over and when they figure it out, which they will, it might turn them off to the game. They will at the very least never trade with that person again so while it's a good gain at the moment, you shut yourself off to a future trade partner and potentially a player that supports the game you love to play.

It's sad how short-sided and stupid most people are and it makes me sick knowing that many people vulture around and prey on the ignorance of others. It shows their true character.

I guess I'll get off my soapbox now. Just think about what I said next time you consider ripping someone off. Maybe something will sink in.

Exactly, if they know what theyre getting themselves into, trades that are monetarily not in their favor are fine. Deception is thievery, and it is one of a few reasons people stop playing magic.

On the note of good deals, my best was probably Lighthouse Chronologist for Jace, the Mind Sculptor . I fully told him what they were worth, but he was insistent that with the chronologist his leveler deck would be unstoppable. I let him win when we played afterwards so that he wouldn't regret the decision ;)

Another great recent one was a few playsets of scars uncommons for 4 Goblin Lackey and a Phyrexian Obliterator . I also got a bunch of Isochron Scepter , Glen Elendra Archmage , 2 Survival of the Fittest , Reflecting Pool , 2 Demonic Tutor , and playsets of Standstill , Priest of Titania , Knight of Meadowgrain , a Maelstrom Pulse and more for Darksteel Colossus and Elspeth Tirel (along with a couple other jank rares.

I've done well recently.

Mine isn't a trade, but i received a ton of cards from my science teacher once. they contained a few jittes and other cards in that $20 to $30 price range (about $200 worth of these cards) along with two force of will, a plateau, a scrubland, a badlands, and an underground sea. it was quite a day.

Traded a Consuming Vapors for a foil Necroskitter , and a Prerelease Glissa, the Traitor and Phyrexian Crusader for a Sword of Feast and Famine .

My friend bought a box of 1000 cards for $40. He let me pick through some and take 200 for $11. I got an Ajani Goldmane and foil Lava Spike along with 198 other cards.

@permhole96: You are the kind of guy Malekor was thinking of. That is just.... Not in the spirit of things. Mpz5 pretty much said it all but as a sidenote, value is not always determined by price. It can be also playing value or obtainability or a personal value altogether. That however does not excuse your actions since it just helps no one else but you. And the fact that you are proud of it too...

Im so happy other people understood what I said before, and perhaps it was a joke, or he was just utterly stupid and didnt read my comment. Magic is a great game, why ruin it with stock market style trade scemes and personal gain at others displeasure. It's absolutely disgusting and pathetic to be proud of yourself for doing that. And in general it is thievery as many people have said, and that means that youd be okay with robbing cards from a store or printing money to buy cards, its pretty much all the same thing...

No, the difference is that we let the others know that the deal is not even. As long as both parties are aware there is nothing wrong with it.

Many times I have traded a card out of my deck and gotten over 200% or more profit from it. An example being the other day I was in a card shop in florda with my dad and my sister while I was visiting them over the 4th. I played one of the workers at the shop and he begged me for one of my grave titans out of my deck. I told him I wasn't really looking to trade it and that I valued it highly because in my area, they are hard to come by. He asked me to look through his book and pick out some things that I would be willing to trade it for. I had wanted to get my wife, Anissa, a Nissa for obvious reasons and haven't been able to find any but I know that Grave was worth more. I saw 2 Kira the glass spinners and asked if he would be willing to part with them. he said yes, he didn't care about them. I told him that they were worth some money and that for the Nissa and the 2 glass spinners I'd be willing to butcher my deck. He agreed so we made the deal, me being about $30 in the good on the deal. The thing is, I wasn't looking to trade the card but I got offered a much better deal and the guy offered it to me knowing fully that he was ripping himself off. He needed the card for the tournament or to finish out a deck and he wasn't using the others.

When you look at value of a card it goes deeper than money. Some cards are worth money and are not really that good play value wise. To a player those money cards are useless and they will rip themselves off to get a hold of a card that they wanted for their deck. Sometimes there is emotional value for a card. In those cases, like the case of a might of the oaks I own that my wife loves because of the squirrel and it came from her brother, I will not let it go unless I got something 100 times the value for it because there is an emotional attachment there. Another reason I might not take a trade at equal value is if the card I'm getting is not liquid, or as easily tradeable. Maybe this card is a misprint that makes it worth $80 and I can get it for $40 worth of cards. I might not want it, even at that point because it will be harder to unload for it's value.

Whatever the reason, as long as it's up front there is no ethical problem with it like there is when you lie about the price of a card, even in silence, or make fake cards and pass them off as real. Those practices are just as bad as stealing the cards where the ethical choice is business. It depends on what both parties value the cards at, not what one party can get over the other party for.

End thread. Before it gets stupid. More.

Mpz5 says... #19

Lol, I'm really not trying to start an argument, I just love to debate, especially ethics.

I think it's a good topic myself. And as long as no one posts more "Lawl, I bought a Jace the mind sculptor off of a little kid for $5, what a loser!" garbage I will refrain from writing another novel.

July 17, 2011 9:14 p.m.

This thread was just asking for trouble from the beginning because there are a lot of dishonest people around.

How many times do you hear about someone having their card binder jacked from a card shop/tournament/etc.

The kind of person who would stoop to stealing is the same kind of person who would forge cards. They are the same, and those people do not change.

I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment Mpz5-man. I just think we should Maelstrom Pulse everything to do with this thread and other future threads in the same vein.

It's boring and it brings out a witchhunt like mentality. Permhole was eager to share his exploit, and we are eager to publically clobber him for his actions. It doesn't matter which side of the fence you are on. This topic makes us all losers.

I met some guy as the local shop to bought NINE fat packs (looking to a certain card, apparently)in a row. He finally got the card he wanted, took out a couple of high value rares, and sold me all the leftovers for $20.

So now I have every common/uncommon from New Phyrexia, as well as the vast majority of the rares.

Seemed like a good deal for me! :D

@Nat1119 I would take a world slayer over a sorin markov. But that's just me. On a different note, I took my 12 year old nephew to a FNM and bought him a fat pack of New Phyrexia. He ended up with 2 Karn's and 2 Sword's or war and peace. Which was really awesome, but he turned around and traded a sword to the store owner for a play mat. I was disappointed in him, but he was really happy about it. Also I traded and Emrakul the Aeons Torn for a box of like 50 rares. I ended up getting two Mirari's Wake in the box and a Bird's of Paradise along with a bunch of Ravnica goodies.

I ended up trading a moderately played emrakul to a kid for a foil theros thoughtseize. He was warned about not only the emrakul reprinting but also that foil theros thoughtseize is upwards of $60 and he insisted that he needed emrakul so bad and he doesn't even like thoughtseize. I ended up throwing in a bunch of stuff for him just so I wouldn't feel bad.

Not a trade scam but still the best one I have in my book. When income tax season came this year, one of my buddies says he's buying a Verdant Catacombs and wanted to know if I'd like one(because I help him out deck building and on ebay buying and selling mtg cards) I of course said yes.

Lol. No seriously though, check the post dates on the thread before you post. If it's over a month old, don't comment on it. It's called necro'ing the thread, and it really annoys people as they're suddenly getting a notification on something that isn't at all relevant anymore.

Also if you want to mention someone you can put their username in double brackets like you do for card names. They'll get a notification saying that you mentioned them. However, that's even more likely to annoy them if the thread isn't relevant anymore.
