Playing against the scorpion god and his -1/-1 counters

Commander Deck Help forum

Hi, we're doing this game where we all chose a god as commanders and one of my friend is playing The Scorpion God. Since I'm playing with Iroas, God of Victory, I can't do soldiers or goblins tactics because he's going to beat them up as fast as the come with cards like Soul Snuffers. So I'm wondering what should I do to my deck to either prevent/remove counters or just go around it?

Right now I'm trying not to use any 1/1 creatures or token creatures. Although, I have no Idea if I can get a good strategy trough that...

Any thoughts will help :)

Solemnity - it's pretty mean though since his options for destroying enchantments are limited.

Cards like Cathars' Crusade and Mikaeus, the Lunarch are good for token beatdown and will counteract any -1/-1 counters.

But if you run enough token production, just outpace your friend. Who cares if your board gets wiped when you can churn out masses of creatures each turn. Also, with cards like Impact Tremors and Purphoros, God of the Forge then your tokens have already done work, even if they die.

Thnx, Solemnity is a must.

enpc does the +1/+1 removes the -1/-1 or they both stay on the creature?

They used to stay on the creature as two separate counters however there was a rules change in OG Mirrodin block (I think) when it was changed so a +1/+1 counter will cancel a -1/-1 counter.

Also you can go with Humility, it's pretty good with a go wide strategy like tokens. People rage about it though.

Bounce effects like Restoration Angel, Flickerwisp and Conjurer's Closet or even like Whitemane Lion or Stonecloaker could be beneficial since when your cards reenter they don't have any counters.

Another thing that would help is having a great recursion package that doubles as an infinite combo. By that I mean Reveillark and friends! Karmic Guide, Sun Titan, Fiend Hunter, and a couple good sac outlets.

Giving your creatures protection from his colors is also very strong Akroma's Memorial and Glory would be very helpful.

Lightmine Field is fun with Dolmen Gate effects like Iroas. Sorry, I know that's not in the scope of the question, but I can't resist telling folks about it when they're running an Iroas deck.

Price of Glory is phenomenal against control-y decks.

Linvala, Keeper of Silence is another choice you have access to.

I know there's more, but those are all I can think of right now.

Use giant or angel tribal. They are big enough to take a few counters. Also use +1/+1 counter effects to negate the negativity.

Enlightened Tutor as Solemnity #2. Things like Honor of the Pure could be good as well.

Hushwing Gryff and/or Torpor Orb if most of his -1/-1 counters are put by creatures ETB effects. Ghostway might also be something to consider. It both removes counters and prevents them from being placed if cast in response..

Steelspike off topic, but i never seen Price of Glory before. All i want to do now is to build a deck with it and Drain Power :)

Wow guys thnx for the Ideas! This is some insane stuff!

I'm in my exam week right now but I'll give you a link to my deck as soon as I finish the build. You'll be able to see what's in there.

BTW, here's our game mode, you should try it some time!

Pentacle (5 players) : the players on each of your side are your teammates and the others are your opponents. One of your opponents is a teammate of one of your teammates. You have to kill both of your opponents to win. You can only attack your opponents but you can play spell againts your teammates to slow them down.
