Kresh Deck : Need help making Sideboards

Commander Deck Help forum

First deck I made and it's been pretty cool :

Kresh Gun Give It To Ya - Strategy in a nutshell

  • Build Kresh to lethal Damage by sacrificing stuff
  • Kill an opponent within a few turns via Commander Damage (by trample, doublestrike, evasion or combination of any of these)
  • Easy removals for roadblocks when needed
  • Direct damage as finisher for dragged out matches

However, I've been running into some roadblocks and I could use some expertise on crafting some sideboards.

Two decks in particular that are giving me trouble :

  • A cost-reduction heavy Avacyn, Angel of Hope commander deck that can reliably get her out by turn 4, with tons of spot removals and boardwipes. Both destruction and exile. It also focuses on giving angels +2/+2 effects and constant vigilance and lifelink. If anything doesn't go my opponent's way, there is a high chance of a boardwipe. If I get too far ahead, there is a landwipe waiting.

  • A Progenitus commander Hydra deck that can get commander out by turn 5-7 reliably. Once commander is out, I'm just taking commander damage. The real difficulty, however, stems from the other hydras that grow insanely fast and have trample. X cost hydras mixed with Mana Reflection gets out of hand quickly. These come out way before the commander and are typically all that are needed to finish the game.

If I can get a good sideboard for each of these, it would bring a smug grin of joy to my face. Right now I'm a guy with a stick fighting Kaiju and Mobile Suits.

Well, there's no sideboarding in commander as far as I know :)

The changes suggested should therefore be integrated in the main deck so idk if you're ready to change your build accordingly?

While there is no official sideboard there really isn't anything to stop you from changing your deck list in between games (unless your in some form of tournament setting.).

Though I agree any changes you make should apply to the deck as a whole rather than a sideboard.

For avacyn I'd suggest playing more artifact/enchantment removal for her accelerants to make her play fair cards such as Ancient Grudge and Nature's Claim are very efficient answers as well as Caustic Caterpillar and Reclamation Sage.

as for boardwipes being a problem maybe play something like Phyrexian Reclamation as repeatable recursion.

The only way to be less vulnerable to mass land destruction is lean more on mana dorks/rocks such as Llanowar Elves/Gruul Signet. Though admittedly less makes you more vulnerable to other removal.

As for progenitus I noticed you didn't really have any wraths of your own. I won't really suggest specific ones here just use the ones you think are the most useful to you. Just remember Languish effects reduce the number of counters Kresh will get.

A couple of pet cards I like are Lignify and Champion of Lambholt which I thought maybe helpful

@WizardOfTheNorthernCoast - Yeah, I'm more than willing to make necessary changes. Like @xeratheenigma mentions, there hasn't been any complaints in me swapping out stuff since I only run one deck against their collections.

I apologize for incorrectly using "sideboarding" as I know it may lead to some confusion, but it's also the best way to describe what I want to do : set aside cards for specific match-ups.

@xeratheenigma - Phyrexian Reclamation sounds pretty nice to have in general. I'll look into ordering that asap. Unfortunately the Avacyn, Angel of Hope deck has plenty of cheap removals to go after all of my stuff individually. I feel as though I can't afford to rely on a specific card because it's not going to stay on the field for very long. Is there anything that can deny my opponent removal or waste them?

On the Progenitus deck, I have a few boardwipes I can add in. But in dealing with the hydras that come out faster, would it be wise to load up on spot removals as well? I'd prefer creatures with destroy effects but any instants would be helpful as well.

Well you have access to Asceticism, Wrap in Vigor, Blossoming Defense and which are pretty good at turning off removal. Imp's Mischief is also pretty good at making removal bad.

Crypt Angel has decent utility and pro white can go along way and Marauding Knight could be pretty backbreaking against a monowhite deck.

I completely overlooked spot removal and yes I would personally up the number of spot removal I'd play. Here's a short list of spot removal I'd consider for kresh:

Doom Blade, Go for the Throat, Ultimate Price, Innocent Blood, Vendetta, Slaughter Pact, Chaos Warp, Dismember, Ashes to Ashes, Snuff Out, Terminate, Putrefy, Devour Flesh, Diabolic Edict, and Oblivion Strike ( I suggest this only if your avacyn player plays Iona, Shield of Emeria.). Hopefully some of these will prove to be helpful

@xeratheenigma - I plan on upping the count on spot removals. I also want to look more into anti-white and anti-angel cards to make running that deck a nightmare.

I was also thinking about looking for spot removals that deal damage to opponents.
