cards against a flicker deck
Commander Deck Help forum

In our meta the new edh deck is a Brago, King Eternal with multiple artifacts and other creatures that flickr. Also it has loads of combos that mill cards in 2 to 6 per turn, bind creatures, removal and untaps all lands multiple times per turn.
What commander and what theme is best to go against a deck like this?
Thanks!
Containment Priest neuters flicker decks. As does Torpor Orb

There's a blue instant that when you play it, any creature that would etb under an opponent's control that turn, enters under your control instead. Can't remember the name.

Also Hushwing Gryff.
Or just kill Brago more often.
Disallow and cards like it can counter Brago's trigger as well.

Too many to thank individually so thanks all. I have ordered some and others in a wish list. I am wondering if Thraximundar would be a good commander? My problem with him is he takes so long to cast that Brago has already done a lot of damage to me. Any other quicker commanders to consider? Last game I never cast him and my friend had milled a thitd of my deck already.

One of my fastest and most reliable and consistent commanders is Edric, Spymaster of Trest. Pump the deck full of 1/1 evasive creatures for one mana. Gets rolling super fast, draws tons of cards, ends games out of nowhere with cards like Biomass Mutation, and can consistently draw into good, cheap removal spells like Nature's Claim, Rapid Hybridization, etc.
Strong, fast, reliable, consistent.

Would Eidolon of Rhetoric be useless as spells being exiled then put back on the battlefield are not cast correct?

RedUndead40 Combat damage includes blocking too? I'm still learning!

Raysracing yes the Eidolon is not useful in this scenario. Combat damage does include damage to blocking creatures, but Edric specifies dealing combat damage to an opponent. So run lots of cards like Slither Blade, Triton Shorestalker, etc.

RedUndead40 My daughter won the 3 up game last night against Brago with a X card. I had taken his life to 2, but he was combo-ing every turn and binding my attackers (Feline Frenzy) and she played a pay X mana for damage player and beat us both! It was funny and none of us saw that coming. I had been at 65 life before his deck got going, but I never got Aetherflux Reservoir to do the same thing she did. She got me when I was down to 11 life.

Rzepkanut I'll order that too. I didn't find the blue white commander (Edric) locally so I'll need to order this and Containment Priest. Wish Containment Priest wasn't so expensive though.
I built a deck with Glissa, the Traitor and had some saproling cards and interaction with graveyard for now. I also found an Artifact (cant remember name) that exiles all creatures in graveyards at the local Magic store. I am hoping to get all the key cards into the graveyard in one turn using destroy spells then on my second main phase cast the artifact and remove as many threats as I can.

There are a few enchantments that can remove abilities of creatures, such as Song of the Dryads and Darksteel Mutation, and of course Humility.

Thanks. Can someone bounce/flicker their own a card with enchantments on it or do they have to remove the enchantment first? Say you put Song of the Dryad on his creature, can he just flicker it with Brago and the spells go off?

To be fair, cards like Song of the Dryads and Imprisoned in the Moon actually turn the creature into a land, making it so Brago can no longer target it with his triggered ability since he specifies "nonland permanents".

Enchantments fall off on exile, return to hand, phase or death.

RedUndead40 I ordered some one drop blue creatures with unblockable and some enchantments. I think my STD Approach of the Second Sun deck should have some really good cards in it too that I can add.

Nice. Here's the list to my Edric deck, it's had quite a few updates since I made this list but it should give you some good ideas. I generally try to keep everything at 1 mana unless it A) is just too good to exclude, or B) has some way to pay for itself the turn it comes out, like with Druids' Repository.
Hope it helps, Edric is suuuuper fun to play!

RedUndead40 Fun is key. I love my modified Feline Ferocity for just that reason. It is fun to make one cat huge and swing and hear the groans, "why meeee." Im not one for combos, and 10 things triggering per turn. Not yet anyways. Thanks for the help!

I think hatebears would be a fun kind of deck. Use Sidar Kondo of Jamuraa and another partner Commander with the colors of your choice. Fill it up with "hatebears" (creatures with low power and toughness, typically 2/2s that hate a specific strategy) like Containment Priest, Gaddock Teeg, Aven Mindcensor, Zo-Zu the Punisher, etc. And use them aggressively with Sidar's granted evasion.

Raysracing I run it in my Derevi, Empyrial Tactician deck, and yes, thats mean :)

jessniem yeah, all fair imho. My friend likes to play complex, suffocating decks with many combos that don't allow you to play your turn, mill, bind, so all is fair! I don't think his decks are fun to play against so if he wants to play that style then it's up to me to counter that deck as effectively.

here is what I have built for tonight's casual play: Edric and Tetsuko budget deck
Thanks for the help so far!

Raysracing says... #33
Well the Edric and Tetsuko budget deck did well in one game, but my buddies combo of Cloud Cover, Altar of the Brood and Silent Arbiter and Brago just milled me away endlessly and all my counter spells went away in 5 to 20 cards at a time. I got milled away with 70 Life!! 70!!
I guess I need even more removal and preferably exile target artifact, creature AND enchantment cards just for his deck. He also has 3 infinite combos in the deck. GAH!
I hate his deck so much.

If mill is the problem, throw in an original Zendikar Eldrazi titan, Worldspine Wurm, Guile or any other shuffle your yard back into your library card.
Quest for Ancient Secrets is a good option for an instant response to mill as well.

Steelspike I had Quest for Ancient Secrets and it got milled away...lol He had a card that milled my top half of my library. I countered it once, but not this game.
Thanks for tips.

If you get milled, you should run Laboratory Maniac and win the game.
May 21, 2018 1:53 a.m.
Gaea's Blessing is useful against mill. Also the old Eldrazi Lords. But those aren't cheap.

Gaea's Blessing is so what I need. When it gets milled away it triggers. Excellent. Maybe if I can get a card that lets me scry every turn I can at least have a chance to find it and put it on the bottom of the library, not in my hand.

Deck worked great against the Brago deck tonight. I locked down Brago with Imprisoned in the Moon. But it is too non creature permanent heavy without enough 1/1 unblockable creatures so I don't have much power to fight or block with. I either buy a bunch of creatures from Edric's Weenie Horde and drop a lot of those spells or I only play the deck against that Brago deck....

One thing I know or I am pretty sure I need is interaction with my graveyard, though this player also had the ability in one game to exile loads of cards too. When you lose 2 to 6 cards every turn and what is on the battlefield is tapped its hard to do anything!
