WAR Edits, Draw Package Updates, Primer Updates —May 18, 2019

Hello All!

A lot of edits I have been meaning to make for quite awhile. First off, the primer has been fully updated, including 6 game reports that I had stocked up! I think reading game reports can help better understand the gameplan and how the deck plays out.

Secondly - a bunch of edits to the list! Realistically I make edits between almost every game I play, but I don't often update this list without big edits to make. In this case, my biggest changes lately are to the draw package - I have been more and more interested in a "thematic" draw package, putting in some group hug like Rites of Flourishing and Horn of Greed and removing some sacred cows like Phyrexian Arena to make room. I also cut out recently added Treasure Map  Flip.

these aren't the only changes - my change log has gotten a bit messy, but one that I certainly recall is adding back in Jokulhaups over Living Death. The card ois just exactly what the deck wants and a win condition on its own under many circumstances.

Lastly, I added both Bolas's Citadel and Blast Zone from WAR. Bolas's Citadel replaces the underwhelming Experimental Frenzy and Blast Zone replaces a utilty land.

Love the deck. Never thought to run Sek as a lands general as I've mostly seen Lord Windgrace as the go-to nowadays.

If I may ask, does Zealous Conscripts serve any greater purpose other than stealing a random permanent which you may or may not be able to sacrifice?

Hi @Milesfuzz!

Thanks for the kind words! I really enjoy Sek as a lands pilot, and have been running him for years now, though the evolution into a lands build really started maybe a year ago now. When Lord Windgrace was printed I briefly flirted with the idea of transitioning him, but ultimately I really like how Sek plays out so I left him in. He offers the opportunity to play a grindy lands style game for 10 turns and then flip the switch and kill the table out of nowhere.

Zealous Conscripts is somewhat of a holdover from when I had Birthing Pod in the deck, and is basically always up for consideration when I’m looking for cuts. He’s survived for so long largely because I find the effect is incredibly unique and powerful, even as a one shot deal. The ability to steal anything is just solid.

Ob Nixilis, the Fallen ever under consideration? Also, if you did somehow get a Mirri's Guile or Mox Diamond what would you cut to slot them in?

PS I LOVE LOVE LOVE this deck. Spent all day hunting down the cards to build my own. My playgroup plays without infi combos also and it's so hard finding strong decks that don't rely on those effects.

BX223Hunter in the list i run i removed 5 lands - i m running around 40 lands to get a bit more card rotation space. stil i feel that i hit the lands i need when i need em ... also i play lord windgrace in the 99 but stil focusin what i need to trow in and out ... i don't see the easy way to play this deck yet.

@TzickyT thanks for following the deck! Nothing has really caught my eye for this build from RNA. Electrodominance is a card I love for commander as a way to sneak in threats at flash speed but it’s not necessarily a fit for this deck.

As for Living Plane as well as my other maybeboard, it’s really tough. Cutting lands isn’t a bad thought but I do feel like 45 is about right for the amount of Exploration effects we run. Legit, cuts are harder to make for this deck than any other I own.

@BX223Hunter I’m so glad you enjoy the deck! It’s my favorite and most played deck. I look forward to hearing about our experiences with it. I really need to start adding in my game reports, I have a bunch I’ve kept track of.

What a fantastic build. I'm happy to see you've evolved it beyond it's beginnings. Your depth of explanation in choices and strategy really brings this list to life.

Since you've been through my list, rather than recommend cards, I'll just point out that in my own meta, a few under-sung cards really shined through:

Descent of the Dragons - being able to blast a few problem creatures out of the way in addition to hitting my own land is nice.

Phyrexian Purge - 3 life per target doesn't matter much when you've got an army.

Xenagos, the Reveler - The +1 while lands are animated pretty much lets me drop whatever is left in my hand.

Happy brewing, neighbor!

@VesuvanDoppelbanger Thanks for the kind words! Your list is of course my inspiration, I hope you and your meta still enjoy the deck and play it often. It is truly my favorite deck, I make a point to play it at least once every game night.

I love basically every selection in your list, one of the reasons it originally inspired me was how obviously well curated and thoughtful it was. I still return to it when I’m in a brewing mood with this build, and I have considered at one point or another each of your suggestions here!

I like the direction of sekkuar as lands commander, there is a little additions id like to reccomend:

Fire Covenant as a great board wipe

Priest of Forgotten Gods Really good sac outlet and card draw

Harrow Instant ramp with answer backup

Llanowar Scout a better skyshroud ranger

Altar of Dementia Self mill and play lands from graveyard, also helps with living death

Your deck also seems light on basic lands as Blood Moon , Magus of the Moon interrupts you hard(not to mention back to basics), If you ever find yourself screwed by those effects id take out non-fetchable dual lands and non-cycle lands such as Mirrorpool (strip mine is fine) and actually play blood moon to disrupt and turn it into an advantage.

Natural Emergence A bit more situational than living plane, but could be fun!

Great deck, great primer. As a Titania player since 2014, I love land decks. I never really considered this commander as the head of a lands deck. I like it a lot! +1

Not sure if anyone else suggested it (I looked and didn’t see it), but I was wondering why Avenger of Zendikar wasn’t included in the deck. Aside from the obvious landfall synergy, Avenger/Craterhoof is hot, plus tokens are sac fodder and Avenger is pretty abusable. Seems like a good fit for the deck.

Hey everyone, haven’t responded to the last few comments - sorry about that! Just very busy!

This remains my favorite deck by a wide margin, so it gets played and tweaked quite frequently, much more than the update list would indicate. Just wanted to post that I’m working on a big primer update and a big list update featuring some gems from WAR and general other edits.

Oh, and I’ve been stockpiling game reports, so I’ll be adding 5 or so of those as well!
