Modern Death and Taxes.
You didn't think to add Rhino. Mana aint right. "3 colors is too much!" you said. Not to mention the land destruction splash... Should you doubt it? Nope. I know I did at first, but I was shown the light.
Play it out. Be smart. Tempo the tax. Fetch early and take the burn. T2 Thalia, she's basically a white Remand. Mid game is all about flicker damage and life gain. Do combat conservatively in the air. Bluff your mana and vials when you can - most creatures have flash and you have various options at the 3 and 4 drop spots. Chump the incoming ground assault with Finks and Arbiters that are now just useless. Top deck war? Wreck them. Sea Gate style.
Oh, and like, just keep bouncing Rhino until your opponent throws their cards across the room. Technically, the possible damage with flicker effects, bouncing and recursion is: 1,152 Damage. Also, 2,688 possible life-gain (Assuming Finks triggers twice).
Sea Gate Wreckage is a tremendous addition from Oath. Wreckage puts you over the top vs control and mid-range b/c you are going to empty your hand sooner or later. You're weak to hand disruption to begin with. Fall in love with this card.
Why not just call it Hate-bearers?
I can't. It's not the same army either. This deck is mostly air and tricks, hate-bearers is ground and it only shares Thalia, Guardian of Thraben and Leonin Arbiter-- and don't even say path b/c all white splashes it.
I'm a die-hard legacy death and taxes player, and I've been spending all my time trying EVERY single make-up of a Modern Death and Taxes that will actually be viable as at least a good Tier 2 deck. It's only looks like a hateful deck. It's actually quite friendly when you get to know it.
The deck also doesn't attack like a hate-bearers, DnT is extremely re-active while hate-bearers still plops out a bunch of durable creatures to go after you. DnT is a little slower (even with Vial, the math vs CoCo doesn't put vial ahead of CoCo until T5). Vial isn't about speed, it's about cheating those critter out.
Don't Overthink or Overplay the Land Tax Strategy
Even though the deck packs the full land destruction suite. unless you draw t1 vial, t2 thalia, t3 arbiter w/ ghost quarter, t4 ewit use ghost quarter again, etc... The Land Tax is a tempo strategy. It doesn't work all game like the Legacy deck. The mana-hate really only takes off early, hits nice against niche decks BUT is worth saving if you can't hit their land early, b/c something needs to give Wreckage it's access.
Board Play:
Kataki vs Affinity. Of course. Only way to really win that matchup. Kor firewalker vs Jund and Burn. Grixis only depending on the spells and amount of red. Rest in Peace hits most mid-range and control engines in the meta. Sculler is to clean up combo which this deck is strong vs already (this will go out for something from SOI I'm sure). Pithing Needle is a must b/c this deck suffers at the hands of Planeswalkers (except Jace and Lilly) - so keep it in.
How the deck stacks up:
Strong (60% or better) vs:- Grixis Control- UWx Midrange- Junk- Infect- Scapeshift- Fish- RG Tron
Average (50%) vs:- Jund (that's right. still feels good to go 50 vs Jund)- Red Deck Wins- BW Tokens (moved up from weaker after new board card)
Weaker (less than 50%) vs:- Zoo- Affinity (not that bad though - and can easily win the match if you draw the Kataki g2 and 3)- RUG Control
Eldrazi Aggro destroys this deck. Surprise. Just wait till they fix out that mistake and then come back to this.
Enjoy Death and Taxes until they never unban SFM :D
