1-3-1 at FNM —July 29, 2016
The matches were ...
- 0-2 vs UR Eldrazi: Ouch, but a better matchup than the score indicates. I made a bad misplay that probably cost me Game 2 ...
- 0-2 vs BG Emerge: A terrible match up. The deck went tall fast and I had no answers.
- 0-2 vs UB Zombies: I thought this would be almost a mirror match ... kind of a "Battle of the 2/2 Token-generators". But it turns out Zombies can go wider and faster than Wolves. Dark Salvation was an absolute beast and I had no answers at all.
- 1-1 vs Sultai Midrange: Officially I had a bye for this round, but I got in a pick-up match. Game One was a total blow out. No surprise there, considering my janky Werewolf deck was up against the #2 deck from SCG Columbus! But pulling off a win in Game Two was a huge surprise. Spirit of the Hunt did some serious work, and Draconic Roar + Thunderbreak Regent shared MVP honors.
- 2-1 vs. RB Vamps: Easy wins, post-sideboard. Dual Shot did surprisingly serious work in all three games, and Draconic Roar + Thunderbreak Regent was amazing (again) in Games Two and Three. But the MVP award went to Aerial Volley.
I'll figure out any deck changes later ...
Thanks to everyone for all the help so far! Your previous comments and suggestions are tucked away under the View Archive button.
Have you considered Eldritch Evolution as an alternative way to get the combo out? I run them in my deck: Silverfur Reflections and I honestly feel it's made a world of difference in this combo being competitive.

Finally catching up on some comments ...
For anyone interested in the Clues deck Argeaux and I were talking about in Posts #35 and #38-43, it's over here: Gruul Cluues (EMN).
Eleros,
I think the current ratio (14 Wolves / 10 Pump spells) is about right for me, but there's a wide range that works, depending on your playstyle and your meta.
You can find more info (based on the SOI ZadaFur decks in the All things Wolven over here.
Thanks though, and please be assured I'll continue to refine that ratio as the season progresses!
Trev8120,
What Eleros said. You can also read it in the Strategy and Card Choices section of the deck description, under CARDS I'M NOT RUNNING AND WHY. Waxing Moon: It doesn't work with Zada or Mirrorwing. They can't be targeted by a spell that can only target Werewolves.
Like you say though, it's great in an Eldrazi Werewolf deck.
_FxZIONZ_,
Like Argeaux mentions, Nissa, Voice of Zendikar is really good in this deck. You may have already ordered her, but if you haven't yet I would hold off. Partly because even though I find this deck super-fun to play, you may not, and she is a little pricey. But also because her ability to generate 0/1 Plant tokens may be much less useful in EMN Standard than it was in SOI Standard (depending on how big a deal Liliana, the Last Hope and Savage Alliance become).
I would not replace the Nissa with Howlpack Resurgence though, unless Dromoka's Command suddenly ceases to be a thing. I'd probably try Lead by Example instead.
Good luck (and good skill) with the deck!
qrjusz,
Confront the Unknown can be a little tricky Zada or Mirrorwing, and the key is keeping track of when the spells are cast, copied, and resolve. I explain it in the Strategy and Card Choices section of the deck description, but I'll expand it a little here:
With Zada, Silverfur, and three 2/2 Wolf tokens ...
- Cast Confront the Unknown, targeting only Zada.
- Zada's ability triggers, so the spell copies, targeting each other Creature. Per Zada's Gatherer ruling, the copies are put onto the stack in whatever order you want, with the original spell (targeting Zada) on the bottom.
- Silverfur sees the copies target himself and the three Wolf tokens, so puts 4x more Wolf tokens on the battlefield.
- For this example, let's assume (1) you ordered the copies on the stack to hit the tokens first, then Silverfur, (2) all the copies resolve, and (3) you didn't have any clues already on the battlefield.
- The "top" copy resolves, so you Investigate and the first Token gets +1/+1. Then the next one down resolves, you Investigate again, and the second Token gets +2/+2. Then the next one resolves, you Investigate again and the third Token gets +3/+3. Next, the copy that targeted Silverfur resolves, you Investigate, and he gets +4/+4. Finally, the original spell resolves, you Investigate, and Zada gets +5/+5.
Hope this helps.
Thanks all!

Vandyel,
I had considered it, but was frankly not particularly excited about it, due to so much removal in the format ... my thought was keeping Zada or Mirrorwing on the board was tough enough, and running Eldritch Evolution (or even just some Vessel of Nascency) to get them onto the battlefield and then removed was basically just handing my opponent a two-for-one.
However, I'm really glad to hear it works better than I expected, and I've give it a hard look moving forward. Thanks much!

Eleros,
Lol, I missed your second question again (up on Post #44).
Like I mention in Post #30: I've kind of gone back and forth on the 1-drop vs 2-drop Instants. The idea with the 1-drops is to chain them together Storm-fashion, for some explosive swings, especially when Silverfur is out. But the 2-drops are definitely better top-decks, and it's kind of wild how often that one extra point of damage makes all the difference.
So yes, I've tested both, and found it's kind of a wash. I pretty much used the 1-drops throughout SOI Standard, in a more Aggro build. For EMN, Mirrorwing makes it a little more Mid-range, and so I'm starting with the 2-drops.
Thanks!

clayperce, I guess its just because I'm running aggro werewolves that I though waxing moon would be beneficial. I guess your 'drazi werewolves deck build would be better. Ill go check it out and comment over there

clayperce go check your eldrazi werewolves deck. I commented on that.

Looking good clayperce! I played with Decimator of the Provinces in my tokens deck today and it was a total game winner. Not sure if I want to run him/it mainboard or not, but it's really fun when it works. I sacked a 4 mana creature and cast him for 5 with pretty solid board presence. Maybe not a bad card for when the Zada Mirrorwing combo isn't a great matchup. Happy Brewing!

Cragon18,
Decimator of the Provinces is a really interesting thought ... I ran it in Pre-release and loved it, and I'm testing it in Gruul Butts (EMN) and Gruul 'Draziwolves (EMN). But I had never even thought about it for this deck! But yeah, Decimator plus a small ramp package might be a better transformational sideboard than my current Heirloom Wolf package ...
I'll give it a serious look; thanks so much!

_FxZIONZ_,
Uncaged Fury is a great card, but this deck is so crowded in the three-drop slot already, I've never tried it. I love it over in Zzada Prowezz (EMN) though!

Cragon18,
Mentioning the Prowess deck though reminds me: Be very careful with the Decimator in any Blue matchup, especially post-sideboard. Spells like Clash of Wills are brutal against Emerge Creatures.

To no one in particular, but,i am in a area where the decks i am versing are not heavy removal, but use a good amount of it. What could i use as a sideboard or even mainboard that may be useful against these decks?? would there be much to change??
July 25, 2016 11:55 p.m.
_FxZIONZ_ these cards help against removal.
Eerie Interlude (the only one that helps with exile)
Selfless Spirit
Make a Stand
Archangel Avacyn
Flip
Rather than talking about this on clayperce's deck, put a Comment on your deck or profile and tag me.

_FxZIONZ_,
Like Argeaux mentions, White is really good at countering removal. Blue's great too, with spells like Glint and all kinds of great counterspells.
But for this deck, you still have some decent options ...
- For spells like Languish and Grasp of Darkness: Toughness pumps. I think Spirit of the Hunt and Vines of the Recluse/Aim High, and +1/+1 counters from Nissa, Voice of Zendikar are good enough to run mainboard. Other options include Shape the Sands and counters from Earthen Arms/Lead by Example. And there are of course all sorts of Artifact buffs. Or just run big-butt Creatures.
- For spells like Silkwrap and Aligned Hedron Network: Artifact/Enchantment Hate. I like Natural State/Naturalize/Root Out, but I've seen Smash to Smithereens used to good effect too.
- For spells like Declaration in Stone and Murder: Hmm. Woodcutter's Grit is the only real option I know of in Standard. Beyond that, sac' outlets are a good way to get some value from your creatures on the way out. I had Evolutionary Leap in the sideboard for most of SOI Standard for that reason. Eldritch Evolution and Emerge Creatures may be good options for EMN.
Beyond that, it's (like I say in the deck description) just the traditional Gruul responses to threats: Crush, burn, and go fast. Because you don't need answers if your opponent's dead! :-)

_FxZIONZ_,
It's not great, but Ulrich's Kindred is another option too.
July 26, 2016 2:58 p.m. Edited.
Inspiring Call could conceivably work as well. And of course creatures with Dash (like Lightning Berserker) can't be hit by Sorcery-speed removal.
July 26, 2016 3:52 p.m. Edited.
if you're going to use Inspiring Call I would recommend reworking the deck to include more cards that give counters. Only having 2 Nissa's is just not enough.
July 26, 2016 4:45 p.m.
Noctem,
Yeah, I was just trying to give _FxZIONZ_ (or other readers) as many options as I could think of. Thanks though!
July 26, 2016 4:53 p.m.
Thanks for the options, I think i will be replacing something like chandra's ignition for Woodcutter's Grit as if i think like exile and destroy spells etc are going to be a problem then ill side them in, however for board wipes and damage dealing spells i believe this deck already has enough buff spells to defend against it.
I think ill be moving Aim High to side and taking out Chandra's Ignition and running Woodcutter's Grit 2 in main one in side. Ill have to create my own deck using all of the creatures and lands in this deck and just playing around with various spells. (FYI my deck wont be made public except for my mates to see what they have to trade, no need to worry) if you are worried just continuously check my profile, I shouldnt be deckcycling.
July 26, 2016 6:57 p.m.
_FxZIONZ_,
Sounds like a good plan for the deck. And seriously, please feel free to make your deck public and deckcycle like mad ... I love seeing other Wolf decks on the site and hearing how they perform in different metas! And please post it over on the All things Wolven thread too! :-)
Good luck (and good skill) with your build!

clayperce Great to see those Mirrorwing Dragon's have well and truly landed!
oh yeah, the addition of Nissa to the deck is pure genius - nice one!

When casting Confront the unknown, how many clues do you get? Let's say I have Zada, Silverfur and 3 wolves. I Investigate (1 clue), target Zada, the spell gets copied so I Investigate for each of the wolves (5 clues total) or only the +1/+1 boost gets copied?
