Tutor vs. Tutor

Commander (EDH) forum

Just wanted to drop a quick opinion question: which lower budget tutor effects do you all like better? Obviously the grandaddies like Vampiric Tutor and Demonic Tutor are the kings, but once you get away from those options you're left with an actual question between things like Beseech the Queen, Liliana Vess, and Ring of Three Wishes. I'm wondering about what you all think, given the new budget tutor we are getting with Dark Petition, which feels like it's probably as playable as Beseech the Queen, but not necessarily better or worse.

Diabolic Intent and Diabolic Tutor I think are better.

You probably want to just stick with Diabolic Tutor. I think Dark Petition is better than Beseech the Queen and probably as good as Diabolic Tutor, maybe ever so slightly better. Ring is just so, so slow.

Ring gets blown up before it even sees use. Depending on your deck's build, sometimes Worldly Tutor or Mystical Tutor is just as good as Vampiric Tutor and Demonic Tutor. For instance, if you're playing a creature-based deck that relies on combo, then Worldly Tutor has a place. But if you're playing mono black and can produce stupid amounts of mana, Diabolic Revelation might be good. But Diabolic Intent and Diabolic Tutor are probably the next go to tutors. If you've got the money, there's Grim Tutor and Imperial Seal.

I have never once seen Diabolic Revelation be good at all. In my Junk deck, I personally run Vampiric Tutor, Demonic Tutor, Enlightened Tutor, Worldly Tutor, and Eladamri's Call. And Tooth and Nail, but that's less tutor and more "I win the game." One thing they all have in common is they are all really cheap CMC, T&N excluded. Another good option is Summoner's Pact. I played it in Mono Green and was very happy with it.

True. Maybe it's just my playgroup as we're a bit more casual but sometimes competitive. In our casual games using janky decks, I've seen Diabolic Revelation put to good use but that's with infinite mana, tutoring for his other combo pieces to win.

The low cmc of the high end tutor's is what has got me thinking Dark Petition could be a pretty fair budget option, since it will more likely than not repay some of the cost. Not nearly as good of course, but for the money it seems fair (and I only expect the price to go down.)

I actually find it interesting that Beseech the Queen is still much more popular than Diabolic Tutor, even with all the extra difficulties with beseech. That one many really makes a difference.

I personally think Beseech the Queen is absolute garbage. Either triple black casting cost OR equal to/more than Diabolic Tutor for a conditional tutor that you then have to reveal. I'd rather just play Diabolic Tutor.

Why no Insidious Dreams? It is awesome for graveyard strategies, although you need card draw to benefit most of it but that might be a thing to search for. Also you might consider the transmute mechanic as a way to tutor your cards. Also there Cruel Tutor is a budget friendly option (compared to Imperial Seal)

I second Insidious Dreams. Best tutor engine in commander: Insidious Dreams + Reforge the Soul during your upkeep. Just make sure the blue player isn't holding up lands.

Increasing Ambition is also kinda ok if you're really on a budget.

I love Beseech the Queen, but only in mono-black. If it's early enough for the land count to matter I'm happy to take Cabal Coffers / Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, Heartless Summoning, or a combo piece like Bloodghast. I'm also a big fan of Rune-Scarred Demon because he's basically EDH the card; a fat flier with a game changing ETB effect that pairs well with all the common EDH shenanigans like blinking and reanimation.

Huge fan of Rune-Scarred Demon. He essentially lets me turn Chord of Calling into another slightly-more-expensive-but-instant-speed Demonic Tutor.

Sidisi, Undead Vizier is also pretty appealing. A 5 drop decently dangerous creature that works as a sac outlet for a Demonic Tutor, or you can just drop and sac her to herself for the tutor. I'd play her years before Dark Petition or Diabolic Revelation.

I also came to the conclusion that I like Sidisi, Undead Vizier more so than the others. It just feels really nice to get a recurable sacrificer-tutor-fatty all in the same card. CMC is a bit high, but all of those aspects are relevant.
