FNM #1 11/8/13 —Nov. 9, 2013

I took this deck to it's first FNM after creating it last week, the results:

Round 1 vs gruul aggro 2-0: Game 1 I open with Precinct Captain, then Boros Reckoner, the guy I'm playing starts going off about how much he hates reckoners. I play Spear of Heliod turn 4, swing both, he blocks the captain and lets the reckoner through, loses his Sylvan Caryatid. Next turn he plays Polukranos, World Eater, passes to me, I swing with Boros Reckoner, he blocks with World Eater, I Gods Willing the reckoner and reflect the remaining damage onto the Polukranos to kill it, take the game soon after. Game 2 he opens a little faster, I end up with a Soldier of the Pantheon and Boros Reckoner again, he swings with 2 creatures that should have killed both of mine but I Brave the Elements block and both his creatures dies, he immediately scoops his cards with 20 life left and tells me he hates my combat tricks. Sideboard was 3 Celestial Flare for 3 Judge's Familiar

Round 2 vs Red Aggro w splash of green 2-0: This is the same guy that ended my win streak on my Heroic Soldiers Shenanigans #1FNM last week with a ridiculous 23 life takedown in one turn before I was about to finish him. He plays the usual spread of monored devotion but with a splash of green for a few Domri Rade. This night, both games I got my Precinct Captain out early and started spawning soldier tokens, also Fiendslayer Paladin + Frontline Medic to complete a little indestructible battalion, then game 2 I got out a similar battalion with Heliod, God of the Sun thrown in, he had no answers other than direct removal, which I always had an answer for with the 7 protection cards I run. It was very satisfying to swiftly beat him 2-0 with no close games! He always gives me a helluva game. Sideboard was 3 Celestial Flare for 3 Judge's Familiar

Round 3 vs B/R/W 2-0: This was a game against a very serious player I'd not beat yet. Frankly, I'm not even sure what his deck was trying to accomplish because I won so fast. He showed me after that he was running 4 Blood Baron of Vizkopa and 2 Obzedat, Ghost Council, and he sideboarded 4 Anger of the Gods in against me, which didn't pay off because the one time he got to cast one I used a Brave the Elements to prevent it from sweeping my army. He didn't get the baron or ghost dad out in either game because I had him dead before he had the mana. Game 2 he was particularly frustrated because he got plenty of mana but all he needed was 2 red, which he only had 1 of, because he had 3 Anger of the Gods in hand he didn't get to play. No sideboard.

Round 4 vs Gruul aggro 2-1: This was against someone who was doing gruul aggro the right way. Speedy creatures with bloodrushed Ghor-Clan Rampager and Flesh / Blood on top of it, to swing for big trample damage then do the damage to me all over again with Flesh / Blood. He won game 1 with these. Game 2 I got to go first, which is pretty favorable for me against a speed aggro deck. I maintained board control from the start, played some combat protections on my Boros Reckoner to block one big creature and reflect its damage onto the other, clearing the board for me to swing for the win soon after. Game 3 went similar despite him going first, I was very satisfied to use a Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx to really ramp up my board very quickly to Archangel of Thune and Heliod, God of the Sun. He was already about to lose but then I drew Ajani, Caller of the Pride and flying doublestriked my Heliod for a massive overkill. Very nice to be down 1-0 and come back to win 2-1 against another guy I'd not beat yet. Sideboard was 3 Celestial Flare for 3 Judge's Familiar

Round 5 vs Mono-red devotion 2-1: This was a guy who never comes to our small town FNM, we only draw about 24 people each friday, he bragged how he only goes to FNM in Miami so he can play against pro's, he was 4-0, I was 4-0, he seemed pretty sure he was going to waltz in and wipe the floor with us scrubs with his big city high falootin ways. Game 1 he got out on top of me very quickly with Burning-Tree Emissary into a 2nd Burning-Tree Emissary into a Magma Jet that took out my Soldier of the Pantheon, at least I gained 2 life out of it. From there it was the usual mess of Frostburn Weird, Boros Reckoner, Chandra's Phoenix and then a Fanatic of Mogis. I couldn't climb out of that one. Game 2 I went first, which was crucial for getting out my turn 2 first strikers like Precinct Captain, slowing his rush down. He plays a Chandra's Phoenix, keeps it home for defense, uses it to block my Soldier of the Pantheon which I Gods Willing to save, which was my plan because I needed his flyer dead to play my Ajani, Caller of the Pride, used him to buff up my Boros Reckoner, and won very soon after by forcing him to block and die until he had no more to block with and was just top-decking. Game 3 he goes first again and brings out Ash Zealot on both turns 2 and 3, swinging me down to 14 before I could get a response going, which was 1 Soldier of the Pantheon and 1 Precinct Captain. He swings again with both zealots, I block both and Brave the Elements to wipe his board and keep mine. He plays Burning-Tree Emissary by itself and passes to me, which gained me 1 life. I got out a Fiendslayer Paladin and Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, I swing all and he blocks my paladin with his emissary because it couldn't block my Soldier of the Pantheon and he didn't want to trigger my Boros Reckoner reflect, I gain 2 life and I've got him in the hole now. He plays a Chandra's Phoenix, on my turn I use the shrine to play Heliod, God of the Sun and another Fiendslayer Paladin. He scoops, giving up before the army of the sun can pacify him. This was the most satisfying win of the night because he was visibly frustrated, after going up 1-0 thinking he'd beat me and easily run through our entire group at FNM. I represented the locals in the room well, and showed this new-comer hotshot what's what! Sideboard was 3 Celestial Flare for 3 Judge's Familiar

Tonight was the most difficult gauntlet of players I've had to play against in one night, from round 2 through 5, all 4 in a row were guys that always place and usually top 5. My opponents tonight finished #2, #3, #5, and #7, the only one who didn't place was my round 1 opponent. I won 5 packs of Theros, from which I pulled Fabled Hero , Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver and 3 terrible cards Anthousa, Setessan Hero Artisan of Forms and Reaper of the Wilds

Also received a FNM foil promo Ghor-Clan Rampager, a copy of the same one I received 2 weeks ago when I placed #1 with Heroic Soldiers Shenanigans #1FNM

The Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver pull and making my girlfriend (who I'm proud to say placed 6th with Voice of Selesnya) call me champion all week made tonight so very worth it!

It is very awesome to win first place twice in three weeks, having just started playing at FNM's in September, I thought my learning curve would be longer but every single player I identified as "people to beat" because of their skills and highly competitive decks, I've now got wins over all of. There is now officially not one single person there who's deck can intimidate me before the start of our match, and the mental game is half the battle! Good times!

Special props to deck:champions-of-the-sun-1st-place-gameday for inspiring my build this week. I made a few changes, but his deck was my inspiration for trying white weenie devotion, so kudos to lessthanthree24!
