What mechanic looked incredibly promising and then fell flat on its face?? Improv! Well, I'm going to try and prop it up a bit with some fresh deck brews that people have probably considered but I haven't seen yet. So without further delay, my hopefully IMPROV-ed version of a mediocre mechanic. (haha, I'm so funny... haha.. ha. ha...... Stop me please)
Ok! So the biggest weakness of improvise that I could notice was the lack of value you could get out of your tapped artifacts. Throne of the God-Pharaoh gives you double the interaction, as every servo is both a mana dork and a burn spell. 1 damage is not a massive amount, but that cheeky damage adds up. And in this deck we can make a lot of servos. The only weakness with throne is the rather unfortunate Legendary restriction. Appropriate and needed, but not as fun.
Sram's Expertise, Servo Exhibition and
Weaponcraft Enthusiast
all make pretty good players for a wide board of creatures that you can tap for value. For our one drops we have Thraben Inspector and Hope of Ghirapur that allow us to get even more artifacts out early in a deck where artifacts truly matter. Unlicensed Disintegration will get the additional 3 damage trigger basically every time it is cast so long as you played a spell before it that game.
For our top end Improvise cards we have
Enraged Giant
and Herald of Anguish to try and close out the game when we don't get Throne. Dropping the giant turn 3 can do a lot of damage if the opponent isn't expecting it and Herald does a fantastic job of controlling the board mid-late game.
The other closers are some X damage to the face cards assisted by Inspiring Statuary. Cut / Ribbons and
Fall of the Titans
are usually able to get in for 7 or more late game without much trouble. This combined with the random bits of direct damage are usually enough to close out a game.
Sideboard has some artifact and enchantment removal in Fragmentize and Anguished Unmaking, a way to deal with buffed up zombies in Dusk / Dawn, A permanent Servo booster in Master Trinketeer, an alt win con in Marionette Master, a board wipe fighter in Syndicate Trafficker and deck searching removal in Dispossess and Lost Legacy.
But tell me what you think, make some suggestions, Upvote if it's fun, and enjoy the game. Thanks for reading!
