Sideboard

Competitve-level Burn deck that has made Top 4 on multiple occasions at my LGS. Or, it's what I consider to be competitive.

It's pretty straightforward: play guys, cast burn spells before or during combat, turn everything sideways. You definitely want to avoid casting spells during your opponent's turn or at the end of their turn, so that you can take advantage of Monastery Swiftspear's Prowess triggers (of course, if Swiftspear isn't out, you don't have to worry about that strategy).

While on the subject of Monastery Swiftspear , I will share with you my new, absolute favorite combo with this deck:

Turn 1: Stomping Ground , Monastery Swiftspear , swing for 1 damage.

Turn 2: Mountain / Any land really, swing, BEFORE DAMAGE, Atarka's Command , naming 3 damage and extra land drop, prowess trigger, then again BEFORE DAMAGE, cast Lightning Bolt or even Shard Volley (Bolt is the preferred choice]] , another Prowess trigger, THEN hit them for 9 damage.

You've got them down to TEN life, on Turn 2. There are very few decks in all of Modern that can come back from that kind of play.

The sideboard was built to react against my local meta, so feel free to tweak this as needed for your meta:

Torpor Orb : So much hate potential! Works well against any sort of deck that abuses ETB triggers.

Kor Firewalker : Unburnable body that slows down other Burn decks.

Destructive Revelry : Affinity/Bogle hate.

Rending Volley : See Destructive Revelry , but replace "Affinity/Bogle" with "Twin." Works pretty well with Restoration Angel and other white/blue fatties, too.

Deflecting Palm : Beats back Primeval Titan , or a particularly beefy Artifact. One of the funniest plays with this card is against for Infect to beef up their creature to lethal Poison, then Palm it back at their face. It won't deal poison damage, but it will hit them for a LOT of regular damage. Which, if your opponent has been getting the full mileage out of their fetching, shocking, and Phyrexian mana, will be close to lethal!

Molten Rain : Manlands, Infect/Affinity lands, or just keeping your opponent in a continuous state of mana-starved-ness!

Path to Exile : When their creatures are too big to burn with one spell, send them to the Shadow Realm! ....... sorry, wrong game...

And that's it! Comments/suggestions are welcome!

Thanks for checking it out!

Updates Add

It's been a while since I've messed with this list, so I figured it was time for an update!

In my studies of various Modern tournaments, a lot of Burn decks have begun adding more green for Wild Nacatl. After much thought, and actually playing against a "Nacatl Burn" deck at a PPTQ (with disastrous results for me, unfortunately), I decided that it was time to tweak my list to suit the evolution of Burn!

So far, so good. It's the only change I've made recently (not counting the extra green sources I've incorporated). I'll make changes as they occur!

Thanks again for taking a look!
