Modern Aggro W/B (Orzhov)

Lifelink deck I'm making for my girlfriend who I've recently just gotten into Magic (WIN). I made her a basic lifelink deck out of the cards I owned when I tried to get her into it, and she then asked for a good deck like that, so I sought out to make a decently competitive deck around it.

She loved Baneslayer Angel whenever it came out on the field because there was little I could do to overpower it, and it just netted her way too much life. She also thought it was a pretty card because, well, the artwork is pretty damn sexy.

Anyway, just wanted to see if I could get any opinions or suggestions to make it better.

+1 the deck because we need more girls to play Magic.

Vault of the ArchangelMTG Card: Vault of the Archangel was in mind when I first started making the deck, but I thought having It might screw my mana around by not having the right colour needed, and most of the creatures have lifelink anyway so I'd only benefit half as much as I would normally.

Pillory of the SleeplessMTG Card: Pillory of the Sleepless is pretty good. I might sideboard this...

Soul LinkMTG Card: Soul Link is just a more expensive LifelinkMTG Card: Lifelink, isn't it?

VindicateMTG Card: Vindicate is sideboarded already, and Vish Kal is just too expensive imo.

ScrublandMTG Card: Scrubland would be sweet if I could get my hands on a playset. Thanks for that. :)

And haha, thanks eutha anyway. :P

+1 for more girls playing MTG ::D

PS. Would take out the vampire nighthawk out - absolutely kickass card, but your deck seems mainly white, so a double black-mana card at 3 cmc MUST get stuck in hand sometimes? doesn't it? There might be other fitting flavorful stuff out there waiting for you :)

I play something like this Although he is slow to start, Ajani Goldmane is great If you can pull him off. With the vamps you should be able to do this.

Might want to throw in some of the soul sister

STG says... #10

pookypuppy6: Ah, fair enough. That's interesting... I'll consider it, I'm not fully convinced its necessary, but it may be good to replace Edge of the DivinityMTG Card: Edge of the Divinity or something. Pillory of the SleeplessMTG Card: Pillory of the Sleepless is good, I'm just not sure what to take out for it. And I've also got all those cards except the Guildmade mainboarded. Haha

clamyd: Ajani's PridemateMTG Card: Ajani's Pridemate is good in a lifegain deck, but hes better in a Soul Sister's build where there are a lot more instances of lifegain going on. This build is more aggro and pseudo-creature-life-drain. Angel's MercyMTG Card: Angel's Mercy is too mana expensive for its use. Rest for the WearyMTG Card: Rest for the Weary can do more for half the mana, albeit being situational as opposed to guaranteed 7 life. The Disciple wouldn't be good as I want creature presence on the board.

radouf: Cheers mate (: That is a good point. As badass as he is, its not cool to be mana screwed and have a card sitting there 2-3 turns after it should've landed the field. I haven't done much playtesting as I still have to scrounge up all the cards, but I'll see what happens with some T/O playtesting.

LordofInfect: Ajani GoldmaneMTG Card: Ajani Goldmane is too slow. He's too easy a target, and I would prefer to be playing other 4 mana drops (Wall of ReverenceMTG Card: Wall of Reverence, Cradle of VitalityMTG Card: Cradle of Vitality) over the big scythe/halberd-wielding kitty. And if I go Soul Sister I would be changing the build, as I mentioned earlier.

Thank you all for the feedback so far, and the support for more girls playing. My girlfriend is even more interested in playing now. :P

@pookypuppy6 and STG Just so you know lifelink does stack. So if a creature has two instances of lifelink on it and it deals three damage you would gain 6 life. Soul LinkMTG Card: Soul Link is therefore unnecessary and LifelinkMTG Card: Lifelink would be a lot better to put in.

February 13, 2012 12:08 p.m.

keshav says... #12

sparkman: That is incorrect.

702.14e Multiple instances of lifelink on the same object are redundant.

February 13, 2012 12:13 p.m.

sparkman says... #13

Oh I guess you are right. They changed it with m10. But a cheaper card that does the same thing is Spirit LoopMTG Card: Spirit Loop.

February 13, 2012 12:18 p.m.

Virlym says... #14

Soul LinkMTG Card: Soul Link is better because it is not just having lifelink. Lifelink only gains you life when the creature deals damage. Soul LinkMTG Card: Soul Link also gains you life when the creature is damaged. Let's say it's on your attacking Baneslayer AngelMTG Card: Baneslayer Angel and you are blocked by a PurityMTG Card: Purity. After all damage is done, you will end up gaining 16 life. 5 for Baneslayer AngelMTG Card: Baneslayer Angel's original lifelink, 5 for the extra "lifelink" on Baneslayer AngelMTG Card: Baneslayer Angel because of Soul LinkMTG Card: Soul Link, and 6 because PurityMTG Card: Purity did 6 damage to your Baneslayer AngelMTG Card: Baneslayer Angel (the second half of Soul LinkMTG Card: Soul Link's effect).

@SexyNoodle90 stacking lifelink was removed on the release of M11. sorry to pop your bubble, bro.

Anyways, +1 because my girlfriend also plays magic... I made deck:roflstompy for her

February 13, 2012 2:18 p.m.

mistory says... #16

@NoSkillManiac It's not stacking lifelink, it's stacking an ability that does the same thing as lifelink, and lifelink. (They are 2 separate abilities, so you would gain life from both.)

February 13, 2012 5:38 p.m.

+1, because my gf ALSO plays magic...I got her into it, too!She is going for a red/black vampire deck. :P

Either way, I recommend adding Soul's AttendantMTG Card: Soul's Attendant as well as Soul WardenMTG Card: Soul Warden, for more pain-in-the-ass lifegain.

turn 10? i got 86 life... heheheheheone problem, which is that this deck is destroyed by infect.Try sideboarding something against it. I know very few people actually play infect, but in wolf run ramp inkmoth nexus can be pumped a great deal and you can't do anything about it.

Why aren't you running ajani's pridemate? it is a good bomb that will allow you to deal a lot of c=damage. But, i guess this is more of a lifegain and chalice deck, not an ajani type cat deck.

I would go for the Soul Sisters style deck. Using sets of Soul's AttendantMTG Card: Soul's Attendant and Soul WardenMTG Card: Soul Warden to pump up Ajani's PridemateMTG Card: Ajani's Pridemate and Serra AscendantMTG Card: Serra Ascendant for the win (Ajani's PridemateMTG Card: Ajani's Pridemate can often get to become a 5/5 or stronger by turn 3, essentially making it a budget white TarmogoyfMTG Card: Tarmogoyf). With cards like Lone MissionaryMTG Card: Lone Missionary and Kitchen FinksMTG Card: Kitchen Finks, it's not unimaginable that a single Ajani's PridemateMTG Card: Ajani's Pridemate can win the game. Then, use cards like Oblivion RingMTG Card: Oblivion Ring and Fiend HunterMTG Card: Fiend Hunter for removal. You could throw in Baneslayer AngelMTG Card: Baneslayer Angel for a late-game heavy hitter and Felidar SovereignMTG Card: Felidar Sovereign as an alternate win-con to your Ajani's PridemateMTG Card: Ajani's Pridemates and Serra AscendantMTG Card: Serra Ascendants.

Pride GuardianMTG Card: Pride Guardian would also be a good addition, first turn drop and you gain 3 life everytime you block, combine this with Rest for the WearyMTG Card: Rest for the Weary on turn 2 you can have over 30 life if you go 2nd! True ConvictionMTG Card: True Conviction will also be a really good card to have. In causal play I saw someone use mirrodin crusader (For some reason the data base cannot find this card) with True ConvictionMTG Card: True Conviction and they had 176 health whenever the opponent finally quit.

Cool Deck! Half of the decks I see posted are of dudes creating decks for their girl friends. I've helped make a couple for mine gf even. I think girlfriends' attitudes toward Magic make it an even more exciting game. (Even if it's all about pretty cards and kitties). It's nice to have a break from standard competitive decks once and a while. And try Beacon of ImmortalityMTG Card: Beacon of Immortality for some mad life gain!

February 16, 2012 8:51 p.m.

Virlym says... #32

Beacon of ImmortalityMTG Card: Beacon of Immortality + False CureMTG Card: False Cure = win. Just thought I'd point that out in case you find you can get to 8 mana.

Gotmarth says... #34

Beacon targets a player, so you could make your opponent lose.

I feel that you should attempt to make this deck modern due to the majority of modern legal cards.

+1 cus i was gonna do this for modern and more girls need to play :P

February 17, 2012 10 a.m.

STG says... #35

Wow. Thank you for all the feedback and interest in the deck. :) I still have to get more of the cards, but this deck is going to be built somegime soon! From your feedback though, i have considered a few minor changes, and have decided to keep it Modern as Gotmarth suggested.

After a bit of playtesting, ive noticed that it is a bit hard to have 2 swamps by turn 3 for the Vampire NighthawkMTG Card: Vampire Nighthawk, so im thinking of removing him.

Vault of the ArchangelMTG Card: Vault of the Archangel has been mentioned a few times, so im going to try running 2 of them and see how it goes. The same with Ajani's PridemateMTG Card: Ajani's Pridemate, while at first i was a bit eh with the inclusion, i think there might be enough life instances from lifelink attacks for it to be worthwhile.

Also, ive noticed that Cradle of VitalityMTG Card: Cradle of Vitality essentially doubles creature's attacks and generates heaps more life, so ill add another one of those.

Now all i have to do ia update the sideboard to be modern legal. Beacon of ImmortalityMTG Card: Beacon of Immortality will go in there, but im not sure what else should go there either...

Thanks for all the feedback again guys! My girlfriend and i never expected this much attention for the deck :3

Celestial ForceMTG Card: Celestial Force+Boon ReflectionMTG Card: Boon Reflection+Beacon of ImmortalityMTG Card: Beacon of Immortality+Celestial MantleMTG Card: Celestial Mantle. You can Life gain like crazy.

February 18, 2012 1:35 a.m.

Jokernaught says... #38

That Soul LinkMTG Card: Soul Link+Pestilence DemonMTG Card: Pestilence Demon at minimum you tap 5 and deal five damage to a minimum of 3 targets (Yourself, The Demon, and Your opponent) You loose 5 life, and gain 15 which is... 10 life profit plus maybe a Sanguine Blood on the field, dishes out another 15 to your opponent for a staggering 20 points of life lost for your opponent and you only had to take 5 damage.

That is the minimum number of targets, land tapped, and damage dealt. Think of the maximum amount you could deal here.

February 18, 2012 2:13 a.m.

STG says... #42

Interesting idea Jokernaught, except the big issue with that is, as you said, the cost of doing all that. It may be too late in the game to reap the full benefit of that combo.

theonyc, not sure how that's relevant to the deck but no, "enters the battlefield" is a state-based effect, not an activated ability.

Mpz5: Originally that was a card I had looked at but I thought benefited a mono white deck more than anything, but considering how my deck is now pretty much majority white, it might just work. I'll playtest it over Suture PriestMTG Card: Suture Priest and see how it runs.

+1 for girls playing. While lifelink does not stack, there are some cards, printed after the lifelink mechanic was created, that have "when this creature deals damage, you gain that much life." That does NOT read as lifelink in the oracle, and that stacks with itself and lifelink. Plus, read Soul Link properly. "When enchanted creature deals OR IS DEALT damage, you gain that much life." so if you block a 4/4 with, say, a 6/6 Ajani's Pridemate that has Soul Link attached, you will gain 6 life off Ajani's Pridemate dealing damage then 4 life off the damage that the 4/4 is dealing the pridemate.
