Mono Green Commander Choices

Commander Deck Help forum

Hey Guys,

I want to build a fun Mono green stompy commander deck. I DESPISE tokens and would prefer to stay away from elf-tribal, but I don't mind putting elves in for the sake of ramp. The deck would be for a casual/semi-competitive environment.

Combos would be nice, but not necessary at all.

I want to somehow include equipment (all the swords!) in the deck. Maybe even possibly go the voltron route (despite never having made a voltron deck). That being said, here are my choices so far. The order goes from most to least favorite.

  1. Omnath, Locus of Mana - OM NOM NOM NATH The first creature I thought of because he is the epitome of Green. Would fit the voltron idea from all of the extra green mana.

  2. Thrun, the Last Troll - He looks the easiest to go the voltron route with. Slap on some swords, evasion and death shall come swiftly

  3. Selvala, Heart of the Wilds - I've seen some very interesting deck lists with this commander. I am little hesitant to choose Selvala as my opponents can benefit as well.

  4. Yeva, Nature's Herald - Cool card, but I feel it can just be added to the deck rather than be at the helm of it.

  5. Azusa, Lost but Seeking I feel this would paint a big target on my head

Omnath was one of my first decks and he's a lot of fun. Over time, though, my deck became less about ramping into fatties and instead became about ramping straight into a powerful creature and protecting him with spells. That was fun for a while but I like interaction between cards and while there were some fun synergies like throwing Bear Umbra into omnath, it became less fun as I was consistently winning against a full table by turn 5, maybe 6. If you're looking for huge green fatties or voltron without even needing equipment, definitely go with omnath, otherwise I would recommend choosing a different commander.

I've never played against an Omnath deck (only against his raging cousin Omnath, Locus of Rage who beat the sh*t out of me). Was it not fun because of the lack of interaction of cards, or just because you won almost every game?

A little bit of both to be honest, mono-green Omnath is very unlike his R/G counterpart. They both focusing on ramping out like crazy but R/G omnath relies on landfall triggers and synergy based interactions whereas mono-green omnath just cares about ramping out in general. Mono-green omnath is much more linear, just allowing you to hold onto your mana so you can dump more at a particular time while using the stored mana as a very efficient buff. I wouldn't say I won every game, there was an occasional Path to Exile or Swords to Plowshares which would delay me for long enough to prevent an immediate win, but I really feel like my problem with the deck was that it played pretty much the same every time. I like EDH because of how different every game is and how you're forced to adapt to what cards you draw and what's played; that's why I ended up spending the next several years turning the deck into an incredibly synergy based Marath deck that is consistent but also incredibly different with every game.

What about Freyalise, Llanowar's Fury? She is a Planeswalker, has some decent elf synergy and makes an easy deck to build around. Also, there is Ezuri, Renegade Leader? More elf (and better) synergy.

Just some thoughts.

I actually like the linear strategy (although I do see how that can get boring). In EDH, my primary win conditions are always combos. I've never had the pleasure to brutally violate someone's life total with a commander that has all swords (protection from all colors). I want to be able to taste the blood of my enemies and watch their face turn white as their life totals plummet with each striking blow.

Thats what I want to get out of mono green

I'd also like to mention a commander you didn't include in your original post, I've always been interested in building a spirit tribal manned by Kodama of the Center Tree; there are actually a decent amount of green spirits and it definitely wouldn't be a competitive deck, but I feel like it would be viable and fun to play. There are also Kodama of the North Tree and Kodama of the South Tree and they could also be used but I always like the Center Tree the most as a spirit commander.

I feel she is more of a going wide commander and elf-centric. That is what I would like to stay away from if possible. Elves are great, no doubt. But I would like to focus this specific deck on strong creatures rather than elves/tokens

If you like the linear strategy and just repeatedly beating someone's face in with a big creature then Omnath might just be the best for you, unless they have early game control (which more decks will run the more competitive of a meta you're playing in) you can most likely take at least one person out of the game before anything can be done about it. Just keep in mind that the more capable of early wins your deck is, the more aggro people will divert to you.

They seem interesting, but I want the deck to be more on the semi-competitive side than casual. I don't want to include a card just because of a creature type (elf, spirit, etc...).

I had not thought of people's aggressive natures in mind while I build up my army. People attacking me means their afraid of me, their fear is good.

I definitely understand not wanting to use any of those commanders but never limit yourself depending on what you think can perform well, if you're intuitive enough then you can make almost any viable. It's not anywhere near up to date at the moment on tappedout but over time I managed to make a tribal bird deck manned by Kangee, Aerie Keeper that could win against what some people at my shop consider "competitive" decks. Sometimes stupid synergies are the best kind of playstyle.

Also, yes, fear is my favorite part of magic. There's nothing better than placing a deck on the table and hearing the entire table sigh as they realize how bad they're going to lose.

You make a good point. I have been getting out of my comfort zone and trying to make EDH decks with unfamiliar generals but I've been craving some stompy green ramping nonsense.

I appreciate all of your feedback :)

No problem man, just a little drunk and trying to help out. If you need more help with the stompy green deck or help with building a janky deck in the future then just hit me up, there's nothing I love more than stomping all over my opponents or somehow jankily working my way to the win.

Melira, Sylvok Outcast is an awesome combo green commander. refer to this page for ideas https://edhrec.com/commanders/melira-sylvok-outcast. but get Cauldron of Souls out and your critters will not die. also helps protect you from some nasty stuff too. add Woodfall Primus and a sac outlet like Ashnod's Altar and demolish any annoying noncreature. vigilance is a great thing to add in so you can just attack without worry. admittedly i think she works better as part of the 99 in G/B. if your more interested in the options you gave thrun would be a really nice voltron followed closely by omnath. i wouldnt bother with the others but that is simply because i dont think they look as cool.

Yisan, the Wanderer Bard is highly underrated. Tutor for creatures with him while you keep your hand intact. With Chancellor of the Tangle and a Sol Ring you can get him out turn 1.

November 10, 2016 8:28 p.m.

I have a Molimo, Maro-Sorcerer deck that I play a ton of land ramp with it and then put in things like Blanchwood Armor and Strata Scythe and creatures with power/toughness equal to lands or forests like Allosaurus Rider and Dungrove Elder. The deck can get crazy reasonably fast.

Ever thought about Verdeloth the Ancient? With Green's ramp, kicking him for large amounts is quite possible.

I will most definitely take you up on that offer. I hope you enjoy your drunken stupor :)

Bhaal666

I use that same combo in my deck Captain my Captain, Lead us to Victory!. What makes you think the Troll is better than Onnath for Voltron if I may ask?

rob_shifflett

I don't think Yisan is underrated at all. He's Tier 1 isn't he? (at least tier 2 if I'm not mistaken). He's a great commander no doubt as I use him as a part of the aforementioned deck. I'm just not sure he screams, "I want to stomp on your face and destroy you with my own 2 hands, you know?" But I will definitely consider him as a part of the actual deck.

Demonfang42I feel Molimo, Maro-Sorcerer is vastly underpowered. No built in evasion, and he can't get as big as quickly as Omnath. If Dungrove Elder was legendary, I would chose him. He is a much better and cheaper option than Molimo, Maro-Sorcerer. Blanchwood Armor and Strata Scythe seem like solid cards I would add in the deck :)

berryjonI have, but I am trying to stay away from tokens. Nevertheless, he is a still an interesting card

with voltron the idea is to get your commander to stick and attack with it. omnath gets huge easily but has no protection so you will need to protect him if you want him to stick. you dont have to worry about if thrun will stick or not between hexproof, regenerate, and cant be countered people need to wrath just to get rid of him. all your efforts with thrun can go solely towards buffing him which is really easy with green.

Very good point. That's actually the reason why I like Thrun. Well that and the artwork is pretty nice. My top 2 choices are Omnath and Thrun, but given what I've understood, Thrun will most probably be the commander :)

I know it's not mono-green but nothing is stopping you from building a mono-green deck to support her if you so choose:

Sigarda, Host of Herons 2GWW

Legendary Creature Angel (5/5)Flying, hexproofSpells and abilities your opponents control can't cause you to sacrifice permanents.

If you want fear inducing Voltron, IMHO, she is one of the best.

I haven't actually thought of that even though I use Sigarda, Host of Herons in the above mentioned deck.

That actually seems like a great idea because the splash of white would be perfect for removal. I'll definitely need to consider it. Thank you!

How come I haven't seen Kamahl, Fist of Krosa anywhere here? go wide, go tall, ramp and vaultron... everything green is here. Just add Asceticism and you are in for buisines :p

And as a sidenote, if anyone dares to wrath the board, make their lands into creatures and they will never do that again. This dude teaches some real lessons!

He's an interesting choice, but I feel that Thrun with his uncounterable, regenarting hexproof body is the most resilient of the lot.

November 11, 2016 11:28 p.m.

Livingham says... #26

The thing about Thrun is that he's hard to deal with, but you have to use the resources in your deck to power him up. Omnath is the opposite, allowing you to buff him insanely easy and use the cards in your hand or equipments and enchantments to keep him alive. If you're going for green voltron then you just have to consider the style you want to play, I personally like omnath more just because the playstyle is slightly more interactive than Thrun's. It might be a good idea to make the deck capable of using either of them and just try swapping them out every once in a while to get a feel for each, then once you know which you like more you can start adapting the deck more towards its playstyle.

Thats a good idea. I'll most probably have one in the deck and the other as the commander and switch every now and then to see how it goes. I appreciate everyone's help! Thanks for everything guys! :)

Sasaya can lead to super fun games. Not competitive in the strictest sense of the word, but often memorable.

I go to different shops in my area with a few different decks, sasaya being the quirkiest, and it is the one people seem to want to play against most often.

I always recommend Omnath for a commander! Green fatties are the way to go in my book.

One other Green commander you might consider is Nylea, God of the Hunt. You can build up the battlefield with other big creatures, bring out Nylea (giving all of them trample) and just stampede over your enemies! Indestructible commander is always nice too and you will likely never have to worry about the devotion.

Hit me up if you need some ideas for green creatures. I love my Omnom deck!
