Is Door worth it? —Jan. 9, 2015

After play testing my deck, I noticed that I would never really utilize Door of Destinies. I would already have three, four, or five creatures out before I can put it into play making it almost useless. I was thinking of switching it out with Coat of Arms. If there are any other buffs for cards with the same creature type let me know. I might have to switch it out with Door of Destinies

If you would be willing to splash blue, then Diregraf Captain has the potential to be incredibly useful, as well as Mikaeus, the Unhallowed

siege728 I like the idea of Diregraf Captain but I kinda did want to keep it mono black, however Mikaeus, the Unhallowed looks like a great addition. thanks

Diregraf Ghoul is easy as fuck to remove, get him outta there.

I suggest you get rid of the Will of the Council spells too, as you'll never get what you need out of them, only what your opponents want.

Appetite for Brains should be sideboarded, and played only if you're sure the opponent is running enough high-CMC stuff (tip: most of the time, they are not).

Distress isn't bad, but there are many turn 1 hand disruption spells I'd rather have (Duress, Despise, Inquisition of Kozilek).

Since you want to keep it mono, use Death Baron to boost your Zombie weenies. Other Zombie creatures I like to use are Festering Goblin, Gravecrawler and Black Cat.

square711 why take out Diregraf Ghoul he's not a bad turn one card. I do agree with you on the will of the council spells though. I had them in because I have never used them but more often than not it results in a tie. I agree again with Appetite for Brains, every time I use it they have like 2 or three mana costing cards. I do like Distress because unlike Despise or Duress you can really mess up their hands. I would love to add Death Baron but he might be a little to expensive for the time being. Festering Goblin seems okay but if he dies during combat then I end my turn the opponents creature will be fine at their turn. I did add a Gravecrawler because I only have one but forgot to add it here. Black Cat is another card that looks like it can mess someones hand up.

As I said, the biggest problem with Diregraf Ghoul is it's too susceptible to removal. When people see a Grizzly Bear enter the battlefield on turn 1, they rarely let it stay there until turn 2. It's not a terrible card by any means, and I wouldn't argue against it in a purely aggro-based deck, but in this case you have a lot of hand disruption at your disposal. If your opening hand has Diregraf Ghoul and Thoughtseize, which would you rather cast first? That's my point.

Of course, it's your choice in the end, and it's not like half your deck is discard spells or something. But keep in mind that your mana curve is kinda steep, so you have to make sure you stay alive until your fatties start hitting the board. Hand disruption keeps you alive, an unprotected bear does not.

As for Festering Goblin, I like him as a chump blocker because he kills 2/2 attackers, but he tends to be more useful on suicide decks, so I can understand you not wanting to put it in.

Oh, and I completely forgot to mention it, but Stab Wound is my favorite card for inflicting pain on fatties. No better way to ruin a Timmy's day than to attach this to their hydra or whatever. Plus, it adds to your devotion.

square711 I see what your saying about Diregraf Ghoul, I read your comment as he's bad as fuck, so get him outta there. Not as he is easy to remove in game lol. I'll take one or two out to put in more important cards. I do like your suggestions about Festering Goblin and Stab Wound though. I hadn't thought about it but those two cards plus Skinrender could fuck with Timmy. After thinking about it I think I'll try to turn this deck into something that revolves around giving them -1/-1 counters, buffing my zombies with cards like Hall of Triumph and Cemetery Reaper, and maintain control with Doom Blade and hand disruption spells. Let me know if you think that would be a good idea. In the mean time I'll start updating the deck to what I hope it'll turn into. Thanks for the input so far.

square711 I did end up adding two Death Baron's because they are to good to pass up. Let me know what you think. I believe I trimmed the fat and added a couple of good cards.

thatwendell I went ahead and added Endless Ranks of the Dead and got rid of Stab Wound. Toughest thing about creating a deck is not knowing how well it works unless you playtest it. I'll keep your suggestions in mind and change accordingly.

thatwendell Hey I overlooked Noxious Ghoul and didn't realize that it was whenever another zombie creature enters play that it triggers the -1/-1 and was thinking of adding him. Considering Geralf's Messenger costs three black, his mana cost wouldn't be reduced by one even if Undead Warchief was on the field. So I was thinking of switching out Geralf's Messenger with Noxious Ghoul. I wanted to hear your input. I like Geralf's Messenger but could see Noxious Ghoul being more beneficial. however a concern I have is the average mana cost because it would go up if I make that switch. I can see that Endless Ranks of the Dead would go pretty with with Noxious Ghoul.
