Historic* Competitive Control Lifegain WU (Azorius)

Despite what it says, this deck IS Historic Legal :)

Welcome to an Azorius-Controlled Ravnica!

"Before you proceed, I need an notarized affidavit of your citizenship. If you are planning on breathing in public today, I need to see an authorized permit from you residential guild. Have a good day, citizen!"

This deck absolutely murders Historic on MTG Arena. In a much more narrow format than Modern or Pioneer, this control deck is brutal, especially compared to the meta (and this deck, like all my decks, falls out of the meta). Sure, you occasionally lose when the cards just don't align, but this deck is incredible at being consistent. I've spent over a year tweaking this deck into what it is now, adjusting it with new cards as they come. The strategy is as you'd expect: survive into the late game, then beat their face to death with the founder of the Azorius guild, or a fleet of lawmages! And it comes wrapped up in my favorite aesthetics: Dovin Baan (an interesting character) and the Azorius senate.

The colors of and are infamous for being a dick with their amount of control. This deck doesn't disappoint. This control is so effective, it really reveals how easily someone will rage quit after only one or two road blocks (kinda annoying how early people scoop, honestly).

  • Time Wipe & Cleansing Nova: Amazing boardwipes. The ability to all wipe enchantments/artifacts is fantastic. Additionally, with the exception of the Borrower, all my creatures have ETB effects (making Time Wipe excellent).
  • Dovin, Grand Arbiter: The original inspiration for this deck, he is a problem for your opponents for many reasons. People tend to overlook him, but he is WORTH it. He will destroy your opponent's tempo by drawing fire away from your face, gaining you life, and his -7 blows the game wide open (even if you're way behind).
  • Deputy of Detention: What's better than taking away from someone's board while adding to your own? Nothing. The answer is nothing: nothing is better. When you combo Deputy of Detention + Time Wipe , you have the wonderful feeling of wiping their entire board while retaining your deputy.
  • Brazen Borrower: I don't know if I'll every build a blue deck without this guy. Don't really need to explain myself. Much use within a single card.
  • Teferi, Time Raveler + Absorb: This combo is the definition of tempo and control. It protects your spells from being countered, and gives you the ability to make your instant-speed decisions safely. One of the best feelings is bouncing a permanent with Teferi, drawing a card, then countering their spell with their next turn at sorcery speed.
Incremental life is vital to a control deck, as it adds double the pressure against aggro decks. This deck easily gets you to life dozens above your life total without even trying. This includes: Elite Guardmage, Absorb, Dovin, Grand Arbiter, Azor, the Lawbringer, and Revitalize.
Once your control engine has gotten going, it'll be time to show your opponent who rules Ravnica.
  • Azor, the Lawbringer: Call upon the founder of the Azorius senate. He'll mess with your opponent during their turn, but more importantly: you get free Sphinx's Revelation whenever he attacks and hits HARD. Plus, he is a control engine when paired with...
  • Thassa, Deep-Dwelling: A hard hitter, and remarkably easy to get devotion in the late game (there are no permanents without a blue mana symbol). Where she really shines is her blinking effect. Target Azor, Deputy of Detention, or the Elite Guardmage. The value is INSANE.
