U/R (Can't Afford Black Over Red) Control

Standard Budget Burn Competitive Control Tempo UR (Izzet)

PsionicFrost

Sideboard

Maybeboard

Enchantment (1)

Instant (2)

Sorcery (1)

This is an attempt at a budget U/R Control deck at a competitive level.

The strategy is very much 'Draw, land, go' counterburn with the sorcery speed stuff either adding some gas or finishing the job. If I don't counter, then burn. When running low on answers, draw.

tinmam: I'm torn on whether to include Anger of the Gods for two reasons: The Double R in the cost and Sorcery speed. I like having the freedom to make decisions during my opponent's turn and that cost is a bit harsh given the mana base/splashy nature of the red part of the deck. Sideboard over Clever Impersonator sounds pretty legit though, so I'll definitely consider that if I can get some.

How about Keranos, God of Storms or Pearl Lake Ancient ? I think Jace's Ingenuity would work pretty well. Maybe better than Treasure Cruise .

EagleO1: Treasure Cruise plays incredibly well in here. Threshold is hit super quick due to all the instant speed plays I can make, so TC is played for 1 or 2 almost always. I end up with a ton of cards in the graveyard from either casting or Steam Augury or Evolving Wilds .

Keranos, God of Storms would be fantastic (potentially), but he costs too much for me right now (money wise) and he'd stay as an enchantment most games unfortunately due to the lack of permanents.

I considered Pearl Lake Ancient , but it would get delegated to the sideboard more than likely since I need the lands to maintain tempo. I'd rather lose a card in hand (usually a land or situational counter) than bounce 3 lands most games and recast without haste. Also, evasion. Great for siding against U/x (other than U/B). Flash would be nice, but I can stabilize against most threats the following turn(s) after I need to cast the Sphinx with bounce, burn or Polymorphist's Jest .

I hate to be the one to burst your bubble but you have to cards that are out of standard in there, Steam Augury and Evolving Wilds. But other then that it is becoming an interesting deck.

Alezium: Steam Augury came out in Theros and Evolving Wilds was reprinted in M15; those two cards, along with the rest of the deck, are standard legal.

Oh my bad, I'm still kinda new to magic so i keep forgetting about cards being reprinted, i just saw the symbols and noticed they were out of standard.

hey i just put this deck together irl and it performs well. the biggest problem it had though, was it was too top heavy, and mainboard anger of the gods might be a good idea for it. oh and surrak dragonclaw DOES suck for this deck. not sure if theres a way to get around that lol. heres the link: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/05-11-14-ur-control-standard/

mouseegg: I see you're not running bounce in your version. If you at least sideboard Voyage's End or Void Snare, you at least get to tempo Surrak Dragonclaw, which can be quite nice that they tap out a couple times to play him just to not be able to attack with him, assuming they aren't quite at 10 mana yet. Gotta play the tempo game against those threats. Also, Polymorphist's Jest plus Magma Jet is a good way to get rid of him, even if it's a 2 for 1, you at least get scry 2, so it's not quite as bad. There's not a whole lot to do about him other than out tempo your opponent. My rl experience with it so far has been to play the tempo game until Prognostic Sphinx comes out, scry for Crater's Claws (which I think I need 1 more of, after seeing how crazy good of a finisher it it) and card draw or some situational thing, then progress into late game to finish off the opponent with a well timed Mindswipe and/or Crater's Claws.Usually Mindswipe gets played shortly after the sphinx and the claw fireballs for 8 or 9, cinching the game. It definitely ramps into CA and full control of the game tempo, allowing for a dazzling display of burn. I've yet to lose a match with it so far, just individual games, but still winning the other 2. Mana is usually what makes me lose, but that doesn't happen too often, so I'm ok with my mana base. Any more would flood me out.

Keranos would go great in your SB, or even on the main. I respect the budget though. +1

Have you tried Jace from M15, he is awesome for delve and get you good "scry". Singing bell strike is pretty good. I also suggest a Sarkan for another win condition.

November 16, 2014 4:36 p.m.

I think Evolving Wilds would be good being that it fuels delve and helps you find your colors. I think Circle of Flame and Anger of the Gods be good here. The circle combos well with polymorphists jest, as well as destroying aggro decks.and anger is good removal. I still think you're a little weak to abzan and jeskai though.

Magma Spray in sideboard, your deck folds to stuff that keeps coming back like Bloodsoaked Champion .

you might have a little bit of a problem with Surrak Dragonclaw too

Planeswalker27: I'm not sure why I keep forgetting that Evolving Wilds is standard. I'll definitely add some, thanks for reminding me. I tested this deck against Abzan Midrange last night, playing around a dozen games, and this deck hoses it (I won all 12 games) since I can focus on countering the chunky stuff.

Countertop: I'll add Magma Spray to the sideboard, thanks. It's no excuse for ignorance, but since I never play black, I forget about most of their mechanics, other than spot removal.

have you thought about Anger of the Gods ? I know your on a budget, but I might even run 2 in side over Clever Impersonator . otherwise I like it. get a +1 from me
