Kudzu

Enchantment — Aura

Enchant land

When enchanted land becomes tapped, destroy it. That land's controller attaches Kudzu to a land of his or her choice.

Hello, friend! Thanks for checking out my custom card! I enjoy a lot of the creations others have come up with so I wanted to take a crack at it as well. I've done a couple of un-style cards before, but this is my first attempt at a real card.

enter image description here

I really like Spirit of the Night and I wanted to make a green creature inspired by it, that could fit into the Mirage expansion. I also wanted to make a creature with landhome that could be useful (if not actually good).

I also wanted to capture some of the feel of older Magic, which is why I went with the Mirage expansion symbol and regenerate stuck around. I couldn't figure out how to get an old border for the card, so if anyone knows how to do that on mtg.design please let me know!

I feel like the casting cost is a little low for 1996 Magic and it would definitely have been rare back in the day, but probably would be uncommon (or even common) now.

Foresthome and Forestwalk

The initial inspiration for this card was the landhome drawback. I always thought it was an incredibly flavourful keyword to put on a card, but I understand why they stopped. I also always thought landhome and landwalk of the same type were very synergistic. If a creature can't survive outside of a certain landscape, it makes sense that it thrives in that landscape.

For this card, I like how the two work together so that the third ability doesn't just remove a drawback, but creates a benefit as well. Once in play, the third ability will basically mean : deal 7 damage to target player.

Regenerate

My first iteration of the card was a Kudzu like plant that would spread quickly and suffocate creatures in its path. It made sense for a plant like that to be able to regenrate. Once I changed it to a "Spirit" of the jungle I kept regenerate because I like how it looks in the text box and I like how it protects your investment, although it's much less flavourful now.

Truning lands into forests

The one thing I dislike about landhome is the variance. On its own it's either a worse version of defender or pointless text on the card, depending on the lands your opponent has in play. I wanted to smooth that out by allowing you, for a cost, to make the landhome irrelevant. If your opponent happens to already have forests, great! If not, this isn't a dead card.

I found the art online and I really liked the feel of it. It has a very ethereal style similar to Spirit of the Night that fit well with what I wanted to do.

legendofa Wait a sec...a fellow botanist? Whoa : ) It's a pleasure to be in such good company. Do you find the card Kudzu kinda funny too? I always look at that one and think, in a world of treefolk, thallids, magic, and even planeswalking cats, there is also just plain kudzu. It's like if there was a card for dandelions, which, maybe there should be : )

while the above suggestions are interesting, since you aren't well versed in modern i'll mention Kormus Bell and Kudzu are not modern legal, so all of the above posts are mentioning things from a legacy perspective. which is fine, just thought i'd make it clear to you in case you didn't notice the legality of those cards.

to try and give you some hope for your idea, whats likely the best place for algea is the sideboard of an RG, or jund LD deck. then you could bring it in against decks that play black such as death's shadow or BW eldrazi. RG utopia decks that slam down T2 Blood Moon or T3 Acidic Slime exist, generally under the name Ponza. so if that interests you perhaps you could make a Jund (R/G/B) variant of ponza that plays a few urborgs in the main and algae in the side. boom you got a reasonable deck that gets to play the combo every so often.

It’s a great green natural disaster, so I do like that. If you’re going to go full-theme, at the peril of losing with STYLE, you could poach a bunch of other fun ones from my Natural Disasters - GREEN! deck. Cards like Mwonvuli Acid-Moss and Kudzu could keep you ahead of them, maybe. My (extremely) limited experience with those high-speed formats, though, lead me to believe that you’d want to focus more on enjoying being the weirdo rather than racking up wins.... BIG FAN OF THE IDEA THOUGH!!!

I've been brewing a similar list. Albeit mine isnt exactly budget (Wheel of Fortune which is actually a pun with Klothys lol). Steam Vines is another version of Kudzu and running both would just seem hilarious. Shivan Wumpus and Argothian Wurm are decent cheap beaters that you can sneak out that no one will want to sac a land for. Deus of Calamity is another good beater. All these beaters do what we want, I.e. speed up games or cause LD. Stoneshaker Shaman, Price of Glory, and Citadel of Pain are pretty cheap ways to stop counter spells from blocking the mana intensive LD (Price of Glory is well worth the $10 tag). Other than that you may want some card draw. Something like Cathartic Reunion and other cantrips/cheap ways to draw. Reforge the Soul is another solid $10 upgrade should you want to increase the budget. Groundskeeper is a good budget puedo-Crucible of Worlds and lets you get some lands back.

Gross deck! Love land destruction.

Maybe you could add Cryptolith Rite to turn all your creatures into dorks? If you’re short on your own lands.

Terravore would be kinda cool. As would Dingus Egg and Boil could do big things depending on the table, also Kudzu would be really funny.

I’d run these as all quite cheap, (if you can pick a championship deck copy of dust bowl)

Since you’re running Zuzo it might be worth having more rocks too,

Happy brewing, this deck looks a lot of fun :)

Thanks for your suggestions!! Kudzu and Ulvenwald Tracker are really good options!

I put only 3 Raze cause I tough Crack the Earth and Tremble was better? Not?

Kudzu can really wreck a heap of lands, and you've got support to bring back your lost land, and no specific lands that you fear losing.

As for removal, Green has a lot of ways to 'fight' creatures, and he doesn't have Hexproof. Ulvenwald Tracker is a bit pricey maybe, but is repeatable, and thus can deal with a lot of annoying utility creatures in a game.

Also, why only 3 Raze? It's better than your 4 of's I'd say, but ymmv.

You might also consider Gaea's Touch since you will often want to play another land card.
