Thanks for the feedback! I did consider hellstead and the imps, but I'm still figuring out a good mix of spectacle enablers, sac outlets, and beaters. I might swap Dread Slag out for the imps as hellbent can be difficult at times

Okay, so the draw step will start, causing Teferi's Puzzle Box and Nekusar, the Mindrazer's extra draw ability to trigger (but not yet be put on the stack. Then, the active player will draw a card as a turn based action, causing Nekusar's damage dealing ability to trigger. Then, state based actions will be checked, likely this means nothing, but a Dread Slag could be dying here. Then each player in APNAP order will put onto the stack any triggered abilities that have triggered since the last time a player received priority. Notably, you have 3 abilities waiting to be put on the stack, so you can arrange them however you like. You're opponent can respond right now if they drew an instant, and after each of the draw abilities resolve they may have new instants to try and stop your lock, but most likely they will find themselves empty handed very fast, and will not be able to play anything other than a sorcery until they find a way to deal with one of your pieces.

you will not have time to get rid of any cards since the -4/-4 effect is a static effect and state based actions are checked before anyone gets priority. If you want to keep your Dread Slag, would be to play an instant during your upkeep, before you draw.

begining phase as three steps: untap, upkeep, draw- Untap step has no time to play a spell. but after any and all triggers that go on the stack during your upkeep step, you would get priority to cast spells and abilities. Even if nothing triggers, you still get the chance to cast spells and abilities. Also all triggers that happen during untap are placed on the stack during upkeep.

You always get priority first on your turn. Your opponent only gets priority if you are going to the next step/phase, or you have spell or ability on the stack waiting to resolve.

Based on this ruling: "116.3a The active player receives priority at the beginning of most steps and phases, after any turn-based actions (such as drawing a card during the draw step; see rule 703) have been dealt with and abilities that trigger at the beginning of that phase or step have been put on the stack.", I would surmise that the active player (you) receives priority at the beginning of the 1st main phase. Since playing lands doesn't use the stack and the Dread Slag's ability isn't something like a triggered ability that can be responded to, you would be able to freely play your land at that point.

However, the Magic turn structure for the draw step is laid out like this on Essential Magic: "[1]The current player draws a card. This special action doesn't use the stack. [2]"At Beginning of Draw Step" triggered abilities trigger. [3]The current player gets priority to play instants and activated abilities."
That last part suggests that you would have to pass priority to your opponent during the latter part of the draw step before the first main begins. So, because you can't play lands yet, you won't be able to get it out of your hand in time.

I am writing this based on rather limited research of similar questions, so feel free to wait for clarification from someone more well-versed in the rules if you'd like.

My question refers to the card Dread Slag.

On the battlefield I have Dread Slag in play with one card in my hand. I draw my second card which is a land card which I immediately wish to play at the start of my first main phase. Since my Dread Slag is currently a 1/1 due to me having two cards in hand would there be any way my opponent could respond with casting a Lightning Bolt or Grasp of Darkness before I could play my land card which would save my Dread Slag from such removal?

I know my opponents are given priority right before my draw step, but are they ever given priority between after I've drawn my card and before I start my first main phase?

Cards I like on this theme are Rakdos Augermage, Keldon Megaliths, Rakdos Pit Dragon, Rakdos's Return, Avatar of Discord/Dread Slag, Guul Draz Specter, Demonfire, the Nyxathid.

Quick and dirty "everyone discards" cards could be Rotting Rats or Stronghold Rats or Delirium Skeins or Rix Maadi, Dungeon Palace (no match against Sire Of Insanity; that fatty gets a better job done).

You might have noticed that every "discard" card is a sorcery or if it's an ability must be used during your turn exclusively. Namely you have a hard time making your opponent discard the card he just drew (unless you Quicken your favourite dicard spell (Raven's Crime)). Here's the Rakdos approach: if you have a consistent way of dealing 3+ damage to an opponent during THEIR turn, then consider Pain Magnification (you can force them to discard every time they draw as long as you can instant 3+ damage them (as a naive example of a card like that i'm thinking Pyrohemia but there must be much better). You would have achieved the fabled "instant discard": if they have no cards in hand at a point in the game, you can deny every successive card draw at the beginning of their turn. No hand = game half lost)

These are by no means all good cards. Just a random bunch that may work well with your style

Hunted Horror isn't worth it IMO. I get that you want value for Cavern of Souls so here are some decent suggestions taken from a gatherer.wizards search:

Dread Slag - Kind of an offbeat card for modern purposes. If top-decking though he's a 9/9 and he's still a 5/5 with one card in hand.

Phyrexian Obliterator - Now that you don't need Spellskite to stop Splinter Twin this is one of the best Horrors in modern.

Phyrexian Revoker - Shuts down annoying things?

Skaab Ruinator - A lot of people don't get that you can cast him from the graveyard. And that he's huge. Obviously not the best unless you play 1/5th cantrips and 1/3 creatures.

Thought Gorger - Discard 4 cards, get a 6/6. Discard 5 cards get a 7/7. See where this is going? Oh yeah, and you draw cards when it leaves the battlefield. He fuels Skaab Ruinator like nobodies business...it's almost like if they both saw standard play they would have been nuts and WotC wisely placed them two blocks apart because of that.

Thrummingbird - Works with Thing in the Ice + Thought Gorger
