Workin' Under The Hood

m0z, 11 years ago

Have playtested against a variety of decks, and so far have done pretty well. Gone 3-3 against a gruul aggro with it's main wincon being unblockable + wild beastmaster. Whenever he got wild beastmaster up to 5+ power and 2 or more beasts, I was usually done for, but other games I was able to destroy him before he could even get a third creature out. Also played against a Golgari scavenge deck, again went 3-3. Whenever he got a good start with a some removal and corpsejack menace I was usually done for, but otherwise I could get 2-3 hits on him and that was that. Taking comment and suggestions and am open to further advice :)

EDIT - November 6th, 2013: After a bit of thought, I've decided to replace Manaweft Sliver with Precinct Captain, will report back with findings. Also going to test out Heliod, God of the Sun in manaweft's place, along with Mending Touch in place of Gods Willing. Will report back soon.

EDIT - November 11th, 2013: Playtested both Precinct Captain and Heliod, God of the Sun and I can confirm that heliod really helps this deck. It ups the price a decent amount, but is still $25 which is still an amazing price for a deck this great. Mending Touch doesn't really fit as well with this deck, and so I've decided to hold on to Gods Willing. It doesn't fare as nicely as I had hoped against control, as I went 1-3 against esper control and had a hard time with his removal and counters, but every subsequent aggro deck I faced lost to this deck. Any recommendations for going up against control would be welcome.

Fencing Ace feature for Going For The Gold

Dextro1123, 11 years ago

Added more creatures and removed Fluxcharger. It was too much mana for something that becomes very vulnerable.

Vanxius, 11 years ago

Added in Mystical Tutor to search for Genesis Wave or spell that I need for the present board state.

Remake #2

GamerSonX, 11 years ago

Decided against the heavy sacrifice theme and went more of a control theme. This may work out better.

More pretty cards...

Lisarrrr, 11 years ago

Gift of Orzhova is pretty, so I've changed the deck a bit to include it. Also, Fencing Ace in to replace Frontline Medic (who I may sideboard..?). A few other tweaks and amendments to card quantities.

Oooh, and a few more planeswalkers found their way in too...

apt142, 11 years ago

Did some major play testing with this deck. It seems to have a strong amount of control without arousing group hate. It tends to fight with a judo like effect using the opponents spells and creatures against them. My meta has a Karador deck so graveyard hate is at a major premium in this deck relative to normal metas. I toss so many things into the graveyard that commanders that recur are super happy campers. So, removing the graveyard is the only way to cut them off.

Sizing issues

The main focus is to play epic experiment and blow your wad on your opponents, you can also use Chandra to achieve this goal, the creatures I chose are there for the shrine to mana ramp, also as a win condition.

Or, if you really want to be nitpicky, your turn 5, opponent's turn 0

The Doom Blade

ckdude, 11 years ago

I'm having some issues with Doom Blade. I want to run the card but there are many matchups that it is just horrible in, specifically one of Esper's worst matchups.... Mono-Black. I'm considering running 1 or 2 Ultimate Prices in place of 1 or 2 Doom Blades. Any thoughts? I've seen some lists without Doom Blade or Ultimate Price as well but they feel so useful.

I am also going to start using 4 Soldier of the Pantheons in my sideboard. They just seem to make sense in so many matchups. In the Esper mirror, they are a huge problem in the 2nd game whenever you play them. In other matchups they are brick walls vs cards like Rakdos Cackler, Dryad Militant, Frostburn Weird, Burning-Tree Emissary, Voice of Resurgence and its token, Fleecemane Lion, Loxodon Smiter, and Reaper of the Wilds. It can definitely gain you the tiniest amount of life in the aggro matchups that could make the difference.

Things things things

Took Epoch's suggestions. Definitely need creature help still, as well as general halp.

Hihi7, 11 years ago

Made a bunch more changes. Deck now has some diversity in it, with Vexing Devil.

Maybe remove one Incinerate and one Goblin Grenade for something on my Maybelist?

Nalfaro, 11 years ago

I've taken out some detain because of the new Theros cards. I've had a few games with it and done really well.

Cockatrice runs.

CW, 11 years ago

After a few games on cockatrice I've changed some parts of the mainboard but mostly the sideboard has been revamped. I feel like it works perfectly now and is ready for anything.

Dovescape Sucks

pkcentral, 11 years ago

I've been playing this deck exclusively since I built it and finally got a chance to play Dovescape a couple times. I had somehow never drawn it playing Kangee. Anyway, I never got the Guile combo online, but without it Dovescape is just horrible. My opponents have a chance to capitalize on it before I do and just overwhelm me with the birds I gave them. I will play Fable of Wolf and Owl instead. Not as explosive, but makes me less of a target. I'm taking Guile out as well. He is damn good but I could only include him with the theme as a "token producer."

Tournament at Gnome Games - 05-28-11

EmperorRancor, 11 years ago

2/2/1 19th of 30 people. Table 1 and I beat a Red aggro, I wont blame mana but he had to mulligan 3 times on our 3rd match. I then played a Selesnia ramp/arggo and he got his ramp on before I did and I couldn't keep up with the creatures. It went into match 3 but I was stalling for an answer. I couldn't touch his low mana 5/5s. I lost the next match but cannot remember for the life of me to who or with what... sorry. I went on to beat a mono-white heroic deck, he wasn't used to standard and didn't side board correctly. We played a 3rd round for fun and he had me gone by turn 5. Being in no place to top 8 I told my opponent he could have the 2/0 because he had a slightly higher chance to skate in for top 8. I went 50/50 and to only be using this deck for the second time in a tournament I was still very proud. Next week I shall return...

Switching things around.

jthomps5, 11 years ago

Got rid of the 2 Blood Pet and put in the Gray Merchant of Asphodel. Currently hoping it is sustainable. Haven't played this deck anywhere yet, just playtesting on the TappedOut service.

Also took out Read the Bones for Sign in Blood as it could be a cheaper draw for me or a deadly blow to an opponent.

The Most Recent Changes

astronaut_on15d, 11 years ago

So this deck was finally a decent competitor at FNM last week. I went 2-1 against a gruul and an orzhov, I went 1-2 with a second gruul beatdown, and finally went 0-2 against a solid blue devotion counter deck. I've added the Nightveil Specter to the Mainboard, and put Chromatic Lanterns in the Sideboard to help cast some of the spells he exiles. I've added 3 Erebos to replace the Underworld Connections. The reason behind this is to prevent opponents gaining life, having another possible creature out, Erebos is Indestructible, and if I have a Nykthos and/or a Whip out it's easy to draw multiple cards every turn.
