Azorius commander???

Commander Deck Help forum

Thinking of making an azorius protection deck using things like circle of protection and other enchantments but need some help with a couple things; 1) Who would be the best commander for the deck? 2) what would be some good win conditions?

Thanks in advance. Looking forward to suggestions.

If you are willing to branch in Esper colours, Zur the Enchanter is your man. Oloro, Ageless Ascetic is another strong option in Esper.

If you wish to stick with Azorius, then Grand Arbiter Augustin IV is probably your best bet. Pseudo-ramp and taxes in one card is pretty nifty.

For your win conditions, it would depend on the commander.

Zur can be useful for finding combo pieces (Solemnity and Phyrexian Unlife is wonderful with him), or as a Aura-based voltron commander, or for just fetching powerful enchantments like Necropotence.

Oloro can use lifegain triggers (such as Crested Sunmare or Felidar Sovereign) to win the game, though he also buys you time to win through other methods.

Augustin works best in a powerful tax/stax deck, where he punishes your opponents, ensuring you are the only one with a usable boardstate.

Hanna, Ship's Navigator gives you recursion to support the Sphere of Safety you want your enchantments to provide, and shes a broad enough choice where you can build just about anything within the "deck contains artifacts and enchantments" theme.

other honorable mentions include Gwafa Hazid, Profiteer, Azor, the Lawbringer and the everpresent Grand Arbiter Augustin IV because it largely comes down to what commander support you think the circles need? (recursion, political, control or cost reduction)

Azor, the Lawbringer is a commander that shuts off a lot of decks, and if you add a flicker effect like Conjurer's Closet you basically shut off all sorceries your opponents might have. creatures with ETB enchantment, artifact or creature removal could then be added along with more flicker effects e.g. Eldrazi Displacer to lock down threats like Avatar of Woe and Oblivion Ring (removal that isn't an instant or sorcery), and some Counterspell action for the instants they might cast during your own turn untill you drop Conqueror's Flail or Grand Abolisher.next up would be some win conditions. because you're in white you have the option of doing some classic Reveillark + Karmic Guide + Ashnod's Altar combo to create infinite mana for all sorts of effects like mill or White Sun's Zenith. other win conditions would be cards like Approach of the Second Sun or Felidar Sovereign. Felidar Sovereign pairs really well with the second ability of Azor, the Lawbringer and even better when paired with the infinite mana combo.

don't forget to play some Swiftfoot Boots to counter that one instant you didn't see coming when you just didn't leave any mana open for that Disallow and the game could be sealed in an "instant"

let me know what you think!

I would recommend Gwafa Hazid, Profiteer. It would let you lock down creatures, adding a protective layer to you by stopping creatures of your choice from attacking and defending without needing to exile them. Glaring Spotlight, as a one drop, means very little will escape his bribes.
