Sideboard

My first deck I ever build was around the card Pride of the Clouds, and I have always had a sweet spot for it ever since. The deck was always pretty janky, and not very competitive. However, with all the marvelous new spirit love from our journey back to Innistrad, I think there is a lot of potential here to give it the gas to get closer to the top tiers. Sadly... After taking it to the Alaska State Championship he didn't make the cut... RIP Pride of the Clouds. You have strong aggro plays which can be layered over with some ideal tempo in order to stay alive just long enough to win.

The Aggression

  • Mausoleum Wanderer fits in both categories of this deck, but he is just so stinking good! A great bear card because you are generally guaranteed to get in for 2 on turn 2 if you resolve one.

The Anthems

  • Drogskol Captain, I was on the fence about him... But with 17 spirits in the deck, it seems worth it. The hexproof was really what pushed it over the edge.

  • Favorable Winds, an easy anthem to drop whenever you need that little extra gas to kick in their teeth last minute. Works great with Mausoleum Wanderer as it makes him turn into an automatic Spell Pierce, which feels good.

  • Phantasmal Image doubles as another captain.. He is presently in the trial phase.

The Tempo

  • Mausoleum Wanderer is an amazing little dude. Being able to simply slow down their spells by one turn is a great way to ensure you have some protection available when they are ready to go.

  • Remand addition to this list as it is a great way to leave up mana for any of my flash critters and have a back up plan in case something bad happens. Drawing cards is good too!

  • Spell Queller was a debated over card... it catches nearly everything in modern, which is amazing. However giving it back when SQ dies feels really bad. He often gets sideboarded out. However, being able to resolve one catching a Damnation or a Supreme Verdict feels pretty amazing. Especially when paired with a Drogskol Captain for some protection.

The Support

  • Rattlechains is a powerhouse on it's own. Giving a dude hexproof upon entering is great at flash speed, but giving the rest of my annoying spirits flash is even better! It is what gives us the ability to play aggressively by getting a new creature out per round, OR be able to be reactive to our opponents. Fantastically fun card.

  • Selfless Spirit is just another great card to make our opponents make choices that are dis-favorable. They either use their spot removal on this little dude, or try to get rid of the other threat knowing I can probably just sack my fella. Also, being able to flash him in when a Rattlechains is on the field in response to a board wipe is really dumb... really really dumb.

The rest of the deck SHOULD be pretty self explanatory. The sideboard is currently rigged up to give the deck a bit more control and fluidity against other tempo decks or control decks. I am open for advice!

Updates Add

We did it! We managed to brew up a unique deck and take it to a tourney... and out of many participants, some tough, some not tough, we came out in... Wait for it... 12th place! Not too bad!

Here are my initial reflections on it:

  • Pride of the Clouds doesn't make the cut... It was a great threat but this is modern, and regardless of how fat a creature is this still either die to some dumb removal spell (I'm looking at you, Fatal Push) or you don't have enough fliers left to make it worth the two mana. Sadly, as he didn't play well with any of the synergies of the deck other than flying (no hexproof, no lording from the captains, no uncounterable from caverns) he has been cut...

  • Anthems are key. Getting my critters out of bolt range (or in the case of the match up I am most angry at; skred range) is huge. Upping wanderer's ability to counter things is huge. Doing lots of flying damage is huge. In short... I need more. So, I need to apologize to frostdiggity: You were right... Phantasmal Image is great. I am giving it a try in two of the Pride of the Clouds' spot.

  • Variability is really important... Being able to have cards with multiple purposes allows for flexibility against various meta and un-meta decks. Because of that I am going to be turning a hard eye towards my sideboard... I don't think I like the Mana Leaks there. I never used them... But then again, I should have against skred (that f-ing match...) I am also trying out one Cryptic Command in the third Pride of the Clouds spot.

  • Sideboarding is super key to competitive modern... And I made some bad calls on that due to inexperience. So now that I have more under my belt I think I can do better in the future.

  • All creatures are not the right creatures... What I mean by that is, I kept some hands that had the right numbers: 3 land, 3 creatures, 1 sort of response or draw... but all three of those creatures were, say, 2 Selfless Spirits and 1 Pride of the Clouds... Those are great cards when paired in tandem with other cool things, but against a deck like merfolk it just ended up with me being sad as I did a bunch of unfavorable trades.

I might later break down my matches at the tournament, but for now I am going to rest and process the events. To say the least, I did very well against creature heavy decks like burn and goblins. I did more poorly to skred-red and merfolk... Both of which I did really close (1/2s on both games).

That's all for tonight. I'd like to thank the people that gave me feedback and support with this deck getting it ready over the past few weeks. Namely: bobtoll and frostdiggity. You guys helped shape the deck!
