Too many comment, Innistrad is happening! —March 31, 2016

The title says it all! The times they are a changin'!

Ok, please, one of you beautiful people tell me why this is wrong.

It entered my mind to drop black.

The first and correct reaction, of course, is "No. No. Absolutely- just no! Heck No!"

But think. I only have three cards Mainboard that are black. One is Ob Nixilis, whom, while I love him, is a wincon and there are other things. He is replaceable, be it with Mainboard Pearl Lake Ancient or whatever, it won't be too much trouble. Next up is Utter End, which.... Ok, the non-land thing is nice, but I could up the Quarantine Field count, Maybe +2 Quarantine Field and and +2 Stasis Snare? Or +1 Stasis Snare and +1 Immolating Glare? Next is Languish. I love Languish. But it does not hit everything, and there's lots of really, really good early white removal, by which I mean Stasis Snare and Immolating Glare. I could replace it with 2 more planar outburst and an End Hostilities.

Sideboard It's an easier choice. Despise becomes Silkwrap and Languish becomes another End Hostilities.

Or I might move Pearl Lake Ancient in in place of Ob Nixilis Reignited, freeing up extra space in my sideboard. Or might Mainboard a 1-of Mastery of the Unseen. Maybe 1 Mastery & one Ancient to keep it diverse?

And the land base would be much simplified and less tap-landy, something that is good

What do you guys think? It just feels wrong to drop black, but.... Logically this doesn't feel so bad?!?!?

Here's what I'm gonna do, I'm gonna drop black for now to playtest & if either I find it isn't working in playtestinig, or someone convinces me otherwise I'mm change it back.

I'm game. Is Narset or Gideon better?

January 9, 2016 10:50 p.m.

Also, what are you going to do after rotation?

January 9, 2016 10:52 p.m.

Gideon is better, but also $40. But I've been having some amazing success with Narset... I've had multiple people just forfeit when she gets to nine because they can't stop her from ultimating. I've also found that it's totally ok to treat Dig Through Time as a sorcery to rebound it.... it's worth the -2 and not playing instant speed to filter your top 14 cards.

And after rotation? I'll think about that when SOI is spoiled lol.

This deck rocks! i just got back in to control and i was able to destroy tier one abzan in testing....but i got crushed at fnm. id love if you took a look at my awaken control deck but when oath comes out ill defiantly take some Q's from this deck so thanks.

January 9, 2016 11:53 p.m.

Sure I will! I love Awaken! One of my favorite effects in the game, like I do a thing and oh my land is a creature.

Yup, that was a dumb question. Anyways, could you make the text black? It is kind of hard to see a light text on a light background.

January 11, 2016 11:59 p.m.

Better? I made it black and it was almost impossible to read, made it white and it made the picture hard to see, I like this balance myself. But I can change it however.

Also, I'm going to take this opportunity to express how much I wish Ojutai, Soul of Winter had any evasion at all tacked on, because she really is good just essentially control finishers need some variety of evasion to be usable. Like, she's one word/one text line from being totally meta control finisher. It's the 1 line that makes her total bulk.

Would sphinx of the final word be a better finisher post OGW? Even Llinvala seems really strong to at least try.

January 14, 2016 6:14 p.m.

I don't like Linvala.

Sphinx of the Final Word, it may come in when Pearl Lake Ancient leaves, but I feel like the word flash & the bounce thing makes it better than everything the sphinx has tagged onto it.

Code goes here

How hard do control decks get hosed by Duress and Transgress the Mind? Every time I want to think of playing non-black control, I think of Duress and shudder, saying "naw, I'll get wrecked." I know this assumption is a total hyperbole, but how much does Duress actually affect control?

January 19, 2016 5 p.m.

It's pretty bad. But it is recover-from-able, the best thing is to counter it if you can, especially since there's a good chance they'll take the counter anyway. A favorite trick of mine is to cast Dig Through Time and grab a couple of creatures/lands. It's also worth remembering that almost nobody main boards Duress, so that means it's competing for SB space.

So it's pretty bad, but I wouldn't say "Hosed." It's good sideboard quality, but it's totally possible to win through one. Remembering what they've seen in your hand helps too.

Once pissed someone off (Not really, actually, they laughed really hard and were just a little peeved) by every time he cast a Transgress or Duress responding with a dig and only taking non legal targets (This was a long, grindy match and we were both basically top decking). And happened that he cast those when I had 1 card in hand & it was a dig 3 times over the course of 2 games.

Huh. Thanks for the feedback :D really appreciate it. Nice deck, by the way ;D

Thanks! And no problem, I hope it was helpful!

At least Gideon is like $21 now. Ojutai is $16 but u run it which makes me curious. Does this budget deck have a limit or is it just what u had/ can afford?

January 26, 2016 1:27 p.m.

It's just stuff I have or can easily trade for buy. Like I pulled both my Ojutais (Both from Korean packs, which is pretty cool!).

Can you make a fantasy version of this deck where you disregard price?

January 27, 2016 12:45 p.m.

It would probably be basically the same only with Gideons and fetches lol. And maybe a fancier sideboard. Probably I'd toss Pearl Lake Ancient & relegate Narset Transcendent to 2-of sideboard against control (to come in over Ojutai) & put in 4 maindeck Gideons. And land wise I'd go -4 Tranquil Cove -4 Island and -4 Plains for 4x Windswept Heath, Flooded Strand, and Polluted Delta.

Honestly though, I don't like Gideon as much as everyone says. Stasis Snare deals with him quite handily. But every one says he's great so I'd at least try & see how that works.

I tried to make a more expensive version of this deck, but it isn't that much more expensive. It is a throwback to when you still had black, so I hope you don't mind that I copied it. I gave you credit in the description. Let me know if you see anything you would change.

What do you think of the OGW expeditions, such as Mystic Gate?

January 28, 2016 5:09 a.m.

That card is not Standard legal.

I find the version of this deck with black in it (and probably this one as well) struggles against Atarka Red with prowess even if I side in Rising Miasma (Silkwrap for this deck), Wall of Resurgence, and Mastery of the Unseen. How do you survive the prowess decks?

I don't like the sideboard. It seems incredibly simple, which is sometimes good, but this format is incredibly diverse. The most recent large event had no repeated archetype in the top 10 decks. I would recommend some number of Dispel, Surge of Righteousness/Arashin Clerics and maybe an Ojutai's Command? I think you just need more versatility for this format, but that's just me.
