"A flash of the lightning, a break of the wave,

He passes from life to his rest in the grave."

-William Knox, "Mortality"

Lightning Elemental is such a classic with awesome art by Kev Walker since the Seventh Edition. The poem by Willian Knox in the flavour text also brings out the nature of . The rage, the sudden burst of energy.

There's a special charm to these Elemental creatures that represent forces of nature. The most ancient and well-known of them is Ball Lightning which fortunately, is Modern-playable, along with other more recent incarnations of thunder and lightning. With the cost of typical Modern Red Deck Wins being a few hundred dollars, it doesn't seem to be a bad idea to build a mono-red deck with these Elementals for the flavour and the budget.

Even though being a budget build, it still holds some advantages over typical Red Deck Wins. Since most of these Elementals have haste and trample, Teetering Peaks and Titan's Strength work better as the extra damage goes through the defense; the former is basically a free Shock, and the latter is Lightning Bolt with scry. Furthermore, they are immune to typical board-wipes, for all their damage is dealt the instant they come out. Such is the nature of thunder and lighting. This also allows the deck to run its own board-wipes in the mainboard, which is uncommon in agrro decks. Slagstorm is chosen for its flexibility of being able to hit dome when required.

The deck is not as fast as typical Red Deck Wins (usually 3-4 damage shy on turn 3), but still fast enough for most non-agrro decks. And you can change to a more control strategy against aggro decks. Most of all, it's got the classical flavour of old-school magic. Killing your opponent with Ball Lightning is much more satisfying than with Goblin Guide.
