Summary

Hey tappedout, it's getting to be time for Izzet to have some time in the spotlight. Journey into Nyx is coming out soon and hopefully we'll get some good blue/ red cards to help bolster this deck, along with much needed scry lands. Anyway, let's get onto the deck!

I tried to push tempo and synergy with this deck, letting you put some aggression or control on in the early stages. I've tried quite a few Izzet decks out in the past months, and I've come to what I think is a good middle ground with our creature/ other spell ratio.

Card Breakdown

Creatures

  • Nivmagus Elemental: Hopefully you'll have him or blistercoil in your opening hand. A great card that needs no introduction, he can combo off pretty early with his exile ability, but in my experience, you need to use it sparingly. Still, a solid 1 for 1/2 with hybrid mana.
  • Blistercoil Weird: A surprisingly good creature in the early turns. Make sure to swing with him first, then cast an instant to take advantage of his untap. In the later games, he combos off nicely with the dragonshift and teleportal to give a decent boost.
  • Goblin Electromancer: A crucial support creature with a solid 2/2 body. Lets you play more spells in the coming turns and plays nicely with blistercoil.
  • Frostburn Weird : He is definitely more of a defensive card but also provides a mana sink in the later turns. Regardless, he's a 2 for 1/4 that stops almost anything on turn 2.
  • Young Pyromancer: His tokens combo effectively with teleportal and, if you can reach the cost, dragonshift.
  • Guttersnipe: Another fun support creature. At the moment, he is a one-of in the deck because he usually doesn't get much done unless the game is stalemating. We are trying to be a little more aggressive with our creatures than normal so he doesn't need many copies. His three mana cost gives our opponent a chance to recover from the early turn damage we've been laying down.
  • Nivix Cyclops: A stone wall that slams on your opponent for huge damage. Dragonshift's primary target is this dude right here.
  • Stormbreath Dragon: I would really like a reason to play Hypersonic Dragon, but unfortunately stormbreath here trumps him in every way possible. He is a 2 of in this deck because you definitely don't want him in the early turns but you're really never sad to see him in the late game, dealing instant damage.
Other
  • Shock/ Lightning Strike/ Magma Jet : These are meant as early game creature removal or late game damage for the win. Exile the shock off with Nivmagus on turn 2 for a permanent buff, causing him not to get bile blighted.
  • Izzet Charm: Great combination of abilities in this card, it can refresh your hand and helps you dig deeper. My recommendation is to be very careful when you decide to use it to draw. Nothing is more frustrating than drawing a wincon that combos off a card you have to discard.
  • Dragonshift : Crucial card for the cyclops and even blistercoil to a lesser extent.
  • Teleportal: Your very own unblockable troop of dudes swinging home for a ton of damage.
  • Hidden Strings: Not really competitive but more for fun. Combos off nivmagus very well, though.
  • Turn / Burn : God destruction at its finest. Have them swing in with their Thassa and turn it, then block. Simple as that. Works equally well with Desecration Demon, Polukranos, Stormbreath, Master of Waves, and all the other big creatures that need a whooping. Zaps all the tokens from the Master.
  • Rapid Hybridization: Mainly for Desecration Demon and Master of Waves, but useful for getting a 3/3 on turn 2 or exiling off with Nivmagus.
  • Mizzium Mortars: 4 power destruction or board wipe. Useful if you can cast it turn 5 when you have an electromancer out.
  • Ral Zarek: I've yet to really play him while testing it out, we'll see if he's any good. 4 mana lightning strike or tap untap, it's good but not great.
  • Bident of Thassa: Provides some much needed card advantage later on when we start to lose steam.

Combos

  1. Nivmagus Elemental
  2. Hidden Strings Tap creature/ Untap lands, exile spell off, swing, 3/4, exile copy off for a 5/6 on turn 2.

  1. Nivix Cyclops + Dragonshift + another spell = 10/4 flyer.

Sideboard

  • Electrickery: My meta is full of orzhov and selesnya aggro that use dryad militant, soldier of the pantheon, imposing sovereign and the others.
  • Frostburn Weird : Against aggro, he shuts them down pretty hard.
  • Mizzium Mortars: Late game boardwipe or creature removal, very useful card.
  • Negate: Versus control every time.
  • Rapid Hybridization: Against mono black to destroy the demon.
  • Turn / Burn : Against mono blue, black, and boros, works well versus tidebinder, thassa, master, specter, reckoner, demon, anything really.

Sideboard assistance would be appreciated

Maybeboard/ Cards to Consider

  • Counterflux: Against control, could be a very good card. It's simply too expensive, though.
  • Essence Backlash : Probably good against Gruul Monsters.
  • Mercurial Chemister: 2 card draw per turn is pretty powerful, though he is very expensive.
  • Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius: 6 mana is simply too hard to get to, but the card draw is alluring.
  • Act of Treason : Honestly, a very strong card that can turn the game in your favor.
  • Cyclonic Rift: Amazing card, but I don't know what I'd remove.
  • Armed / Dangerous : Can win the game in combo with non overloaded Teleportal or even Dragonshift.
  • Fluxcharger: 4 for 5/1 flyer is pretty decent.

Foreseen Weakness

This deck is extremely weak to board wipes, especially those of the non counter-able kind. Also, Izzet has very few answers to enchantments, other than countering it.
