Alex's Orzhov Guild Extort Deck

This is a causal play deck based upon the Extort mechanic and Lifelink. It is an Orzhov Sydicate deck in theme, even though there are no Desecration Demon in the guild nor Vampire Nighthawk in Ravnica, I put them in for more control. This deck was also created to be an easy deck for a new Magic player to use.

Notes:

Simple Rules to Play the Deck Successfully (Though There are Exceptions at Times):

  • Always cast the lowest cost creature with the Extort ability on it before other creatures.
  • Always cast Flying creatures before non-Flying creatures so as be able to do some extra early damage as they may be able to attack without defenders in the way. Be sure to observe the previous rule of casting Extort creatures first.
  • Always cast one spell a turn even if you can cast another spell, so as to use all your available mana to pay for as many Extort abilities as you can.
  • Always cast a Blind Obedience first (on Turn 2) if it is in your starting hand. It will slow your opponent down.
  • When you cast a spell, remember that if you paid for any Extorts, the life drain and the life gain still resolves even if your spell is countered spelled or if your creature is destroyed by a spell.
  • Don't forget that Crypt Ghast add an extra mana for your Godless Shrine as well (as they have the "Swamp" keyword on them).
  • Place your Underworld Connections on a Plains preferably, and if no Plains are available when you cast it, place it on an Isolated Chapel , you want to keep your Swamp and Godless Shrine free to be tapped for 2, 3, or 4 mana each depending on how many Crypt Ghast you have on the battlefield.
  • It is okay if you place your Underworld Connections on a land already tapped for its mana so it can be used in a later turn.
  • Don't worry about the life you lose whenever you use Underworld Connections as you are constantly gaining life with your deck.
  • If you have a Vizkopa Guildmage in play, be sure to use any extra mana to put Lifelink on your Desecration Demon . Your opponents will start sacrificing their creatures to prevent being hit by them (which also adds +1/+1 counters to your Desecration Demon ).
  • If you have extra mana be sure to use the Vizkopa Guildmage second ability to damage the opponent even more for each point of life you gained during your turn.
  • Your Vizkopa Guildmage abilities can be used on the same turn it is cast, because it is a pumpable ability and not a tap ability.
  • Be sure to plan your mana expenditure in advance as you should declare your use of the second ability on the Vizkopa Guildmage before you start any life gaining or combat that involves any Lifelink so you can do the maximum amount of damage to your opponent. This includes declaring the use of it immediately during the Untap Step, before Obzedat, Ghost Council returns from Exile in your Upkeep Step, which is then followed by your Draw Step.
  • If small creatures attack you, it is worth letting them hit you rather than defending. Remember that your deck will be gaining life regularly which will nullify their attempts to damage you. Only defend against creatures you can surely defeat and/or creatures that are very big. You can defeat big creatures with the Deathtouch on your Vampire Nighthawk , the ability on your High Priest of Penance , or using Mortify ,
  • In group games (for example a game of 4 players), when you use Extort, for example 2 twice when casting a spell, each of the other 3 opponents will lose 2 life and you will gain a life for each of their loss of life, in this example you would gain (2+2+2) or 6 total life from Extorting twice.
  • No matter what, do not lose, trade, or sell the 4 x Godless Shrine or the 4 x Isolated Chapel . Many Magic players struggle to get these cards which allow them to play and decks better.

For More Advanced Play

  • If you learn how to manage using 4 copies of a Legendary Creature (due to being able to have only one on the battlefield at a time), having 4 x Obzedat, Ghost Council will make your deck hurt much sooner.
  • If you save up and are able to buy 4 x Marsh Flats , you will see your deck run like a well-oiled machine. The addition of these "Fetch Lands" will help your deck exponentially.
  • If you learn to use your Sideboard better, to switch cards in and out depending what decks you are playing against, adding 2 more Blind Obedience and adding them to your deck for a total of 4 of them will help immensely against fast aggro decks.

For Even More Advanced Play:

  • If you are looking to take Extort to an even higher, more damaging level, using this template by Darkmerc might be fun. Infinite Extort.(https://www.mtgvault.com/darkmerc/decks/infinite-extort/)

Finally

  • Take care of your mother Alex. She does so much.
