The Artist (Legacy Painter/Mill)

Legacy Combo Mill

TheLoneDart

Hi guys, welcome back to another one of my custom builds. Lately, I've been getting hooked on Legacy as a format now that my prowess for modern has more or less plateaued. It goes without saying that Legacy is a very efficient format with lots of solid archetypes. One of the lesser played archetypes, Painter, is what I will focus on here. Painter is a Tier 2-3 deck that is playable but not a top contender. One of the reasons for this is because Legacy has such incredible permission and removal that it's hard to win in the format without being equally equipped.

What I have tried to do here is reinvent the Painter archetype. For those of you who don`t know, Painter is a combo deck that wins by milling opponents (I know, very janky). It does this by using Painter's Servant to make Grindstone's ability repeat until the your opponents deck is gone. Pretty sweet right? So, what I've done here is take this same core combo and try to make it more efficient and equip it with better answers. Essentially this deck functions by ramping, searching out the combo pieces and then activating the win condition. This can happen consistently as early as Turn 3, but is much more often done on Turn 4 just to be safe. There's many nuances to how the deck plays (which can be said about basically any magic: the gathering deck), but without getting too deep into it I'll just leave you with a brief description of each card to instead explain the basic functionality:

Painter's Servant is one of our combo pieces. it basically makes all cards anywhere a certain color.

Grindstone is the second combo piece. the ability repeats each time two cards milled share a color. because of Painter this happens infinitely until the opponent has no deck left.

Green Sun's Zenith is used to help search out components such as Noble Hierarch, Dryad Arbor and Coiling Oracle

Chord of Calling is perfect for this deck because it provides instant speed search. in this case, if we have Grindstone on the board, we can Chord at opponent's EOT then win during our next mainphase. also, it provides other search functions if we need to search anything else aside from Painter

Noble Hierarch is our mana dork for the deck, and counts as one of three ideal Turn 1 plays (Green Sun's Zenith being another ideal Turn 1 play).

Brainstorm helps search through the deck and synergizes with fetchlands to help shuffle away useless cards. it's also the third of three ideal Turn 1 play. in total, there are 11 copies of Turn 1 ideal plays

Coiling Oracle is ultra effective at getting additional lands out and providing a second draw. furthermore, when we play against creature based decks it's a blocker as well, making this card a very solid three for one.

Omenspeaker gives a nice Scry 2 and provides a blocker, making it a great two for one that helps the deck run smoothly.

Trinket Mage helps us search out Grindstone. This effectively allows the deck to bias more toward creatures so we can endure attacks while also helping us directly access a combo piece or something from our sideboard that's disruptive.

Force of Will helps us protector our combo or limit opponent's threats

Spell Queller does the exact same as Force of Will

Quick note: because Spell Queller and Force of Will can come down at instant speed, if they're not needed, we can instead use that untapped mana to cast braintstorm or Chord of Calling, making this deck more unpredictable for the opponent and more beneficial to us.

Spellskite helps protect our combo is well. furthermore, it can be searched out at instant speed since it's a creature.

Qasali Pridemage is something I like to keep handy in order to remove opponent's threats. it's a good one-of since it can be searched and used right away with great flexability and very little investment.

So this pretty much sums up the deck. It's meant to play with tempo and unpredictability and also to have answers at all time. I've had great success with it so far playing online. I will add my sideboard soon once I have something more concrete built that I trust. Thanks very much for reading and I hope you like the deck :)
