Boromir, Warden of the Tower

Legendary Creature — Human Soldier

Vigilance

Whenever an opponent casts a spell, if no mana was spent to cast it, counter that spell.

Sacrifice Boromir, Warden of the Tower: Creatures you control gain indestructible until end of turn. The Ring tempts you. (Damage and effects that say "destroy" don't destroy it.)

How about:

  1. Phyrexian Vindicator, solves flying and deters combat.

  2. Since you have Brave the Sands, you can use Defensive Formation to assign blocked damage how you choose.

  3. Some runner ups Boromir, Warden of the Tower, Aven Mindcensor, Ghostly Prison, Maze of Ith.

Some small terminology errors, but you understand how it plays out and are correct about the major points.

Terminology pedantry if you care about being exactly correct as well:

Boromir, Warden of the Tower's bottom ability is activated, not triggered. When Boromir is activated Ratadrabik triggers as the cost is paid and will go on the stack above the Boromir ability. After that you are spot on, except that you left out that his creatures are made indestructible as part of the same ability that makes a Ring-bearer. (you fixed the last point as I was typing)

Objects on the stack resolve one at a time and there is a round of priority between each. You can try to destroy the non-legendary token before the Boromir, Warden of the Tower ability resolves making it both indestructible and his Ring-bearer.

Of note is that "The Ring tempts you" does not target. So technically if we are at the point where the Ring-bearer is being chosen it is too late for interaction. This doesn't mean that your friend can rush through after the Ratadrabik ability makes the token and declare his Ring-bearer depriving you of an opportunity to interact. But if the token is made and you pass priority, you do not get an opportunity to remove something after the choice of Ring-bearer has been made but before it goes into effect.

While this is a question about these cards, its about stacks operation. So a friend has [Boromir, Warden of the Tower] and Ratadrabik of Urborg. He sacrifices Boromir, Warden of the Tower to use the creature's ability. This causes Ratadrabik of Urborg to create a non-legendary token of it. He then targets the ring tempt to the newly formed token thus making it legendary and can perform the sacrifice again. So my question lies here. Can I destroy the token before the ring attempt is made on it? Or does it need to be exiled.?

My thought it I can destroy the token without it becoming legendary. Other person did think it was true and I could only target it after both abilities had resolved.

Love this, I have a similar theme. I was wondering about any of the Lord of the Rings cards? I see Horn of Gondor, but perhaps Boromir, Warden of the Tower or Aragorn, Company Leader Ring tempt doesn't really mean much, but spreading counters seems strong.

ParacleX Thank you so much for the kind words! Boromir, Warden of the Tower is definitely a great card, being a direct improvement over Dauntless Escort. As a general rule, the list I show here is what I consider to the optimized in a vacuum. So feel free to experiment and adjust the list to fit your meta/matchups! And agreed, Moonshaker Cavalry aka Craterhoof #2 was exactly what the deck needed at this point.

So the reason why I feel lifegain doesn't have a place in this list is because it requires too much investment to be viable. The only inbuilt lifegain mechanic Emmara has is attacking with the tokens she makes, which have lifelink. This is sub-optimal since (1) you don't want to risk getting your tokens killed, (2) you can only attack once per round (3) you are normally tapping her tokens for mana and they don't naturally have vigilance. As such, if you really wanted to go lifegain with Emmara you would have to start adding cards like Soul Warden and Essence Warden. These cards are great, but by themselves they are kinda useless. At that point you might as well just go all-in and make a lifegain Emmara build, which in my opinion is not an optimal way to play her. But to each their own! Other than that, I cannot think of a lifegain card that is powerful enough by itself to slot into the current build. I am always open to suggestions though!

Deck Updates

These are changes based on game testing and new cards I think will improve the deck significantly. My goals are to increase the synergy but also the flow of the deck.

Cards I took out: - Athreos, God of Passage / I prefer creatures in the graveyard - Liesa, Forgotten Archangel / I prefer creatures in the graveyard - Syr Konrad, the Grim / Doesn't trigger enough for my taste - Wrath of God / I've noticed that board whipping is less effective than I thought in this deck and out of both Damnation Will be easier to cast with our mana production - Dictate of Erebos / As good as this card is Grave Pact does it for less. Additionally, I have never used its flash ability

Cards I put in: - Archaeomancer's Map / Better ramp - Blade of Selves / Myriad is crazy in this deck and can lead to quick victories or even infinite combos (which usually lead to victory) - Mondrak, Glory Dominus / This card is WAY TOO GOOD in this deck. It double tokens! It's a sacrifice outlet that makes it indestructible!! Also it combos infinitely with Blade of Selves and Ratadrabik of Urborg - Boromir, Warden of the Tower / This card alone is really good but it combos infinitely with Ratadrabik of Urborg and can be a powerful combo with cards like Grave Pact and Proper Burial - Gandalf the White / Double death triggers means double tokens with Ratadrabik of Urborg or quick wins with cards like Kokusho, the Evening Star

Things to change in the Future - Currently trying to fit "Samwise the Southearted" and "The Golden Throne" into the deck for a few additional mana combos / stabilize the mana production. - I might try to fit in "Dictate of Erebos" if possible...

Some possible additions would be:

Flowering of the White Tree for buffing everything and giving your legendary creatures some protection.

Windbrisk Heights to help cheat out hopefully something big for doing what you're already doing.

Frontline Medic to help when you swing wide.

Boromir, Warden of the Tower to stop others from getting to cheat out spells in general.

Door of Destinies and Coat of Arms to make your army swol.

Vanquisher's Banner Path of Ancestry and Sylvan Library for some card advantage.

Maybe putting in Throne of the God-Pharaoh and Strixhaven Stadium as additional win conditions to take out players that can guard against you or pillow fort.

It looks like you're also running a counters matter sub theme so maybe Opal Palace has a place too.
