Beloved Chaplain

Creature — Human Cleric

Protection from creatures

Beloved Chaplain Discussion

wyzeman on Wrath of God

It's a control deck. Use few creature at the time, no more that you can protect from wrath with Eight-and-a-Half-Tails and other protection card. Use Wraths and removal frequently to keep the board clean. Use card like Entangler or Valor Made Real on Beloved Chaplain , Wall of Nets or Eight-and-a-Half-Tails so you can use one creature as universal blockers. Some other are hard to block like Archon of Justice or False Prophet because of the trade of. For the victory you can slowly "vultron" on Eight-and-a-Half-Tails or Beloved Chaplain

list of possilbe clerics to consider:

Heliod, God of the Sun - okay, not a cleric, but makes cleric tokens

Alms Collector - good card draw engine in EDH - prevents players from drawing their deck in one go also

Auriok Champion - linear upgrade from Soul Warden - resists removal

Auriok Replica - good sac for anti-commander damage, fits cleric type, colorless to cast. not super amazing, but worth mentioning

Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim - not all that useful until you gain some life, then amazing removal. and 2/3 deathtouch for 2 isn't bad either

Battlefield Medic - damage prevention based on clerics. nothing to special, but tribal themed, so I mention it here.

Beloved Chaplain - evasion that's hard to top - can't be blocked by creatures, can't be removed by creatures.

Blind Zealot - sacs to destroy target creature when it hits a player, good for general

Cabal Archon - sac outlet? check. Cleric tribal? check. sadistic grin? double check.

Cabal Executioner - on par with blind zealot - lacks the evasion, but doesn't sac to activate. mixed bag, but not horrible

Children of Korlis - sacs to revert life total to start of turn? yes please

Custodi Lich - grants Monarch, and forces creature sac on play and when you regain it. seems good.

Custodi Soulcaller - requires a few players to be super amazing, but still worthwhile even if all you get back is Children of Korlis

Daru Spiritualist - not quite pro- red, but helps agaisnt spot removal for entire tribe. bonus if paired with Shaman en-Kor

Devout Chaplain - most clerics are humans, exile is good. enough said.

Eight-and-a-Half-Tails - good protection for your side of the field.

Entomber Exarch - cleric that can reanimate or force pitch from opponents. not gamebreaker, but solid card with options

Frontline Medic - clerics are indistructable as long as 3 swing? seems good

Giver of Runes - really should be vodka-aunt of runes, but w/e, still good

High Priest of Penance - great to chump with, better with aethreos, best when indistructable

Kor Sanctifiers - decent artifact / enchantment removal on a cleric body, not much else to say.

Leonin Arbiter - the staple of death & taxes and hate bears is, in fact, a cleric. seems useful.

Leonin Relic-Warder - fiend hunter for artifacts & enchantments, not much else to say.

Mikaeus, the Lunarch - cleric that slowly buffs your side

Order of Whiteclay - recusion cleric. not as useful once it gets vigilence, so fair warning.

Pious Evangel  Flip - sac outlet that transforms into a mini- blood artist, is cleric.

Pontiff of Blight - mass extort is disgusting. seven toughness is hard to remove.

Ravos, Soultender - recursion + steroids = win

Remorseful Cleric - mass graveyard remval + evasion is good

Shaman en-Kor - this guy is bonkers, and with any form of damage prevention makes your side nigh unkillable

Sin Collector - exiles instants & sorceries, solid card. never returns them either. probably is on a wanted list in some libraries for back charges

True Believer - if you don't want people to target you, ivory mask with legs is a cleric too

Tymna the Weaver - less useful in duels, but solid for mass card draw otherwise

Vile Deacon - cleric tribal lord for black, comparible to doubtless one

Weathered Wayfarer - land tax on legs. still a cleric

Whipgrass Entangler - ghostly prison based on clerics for mana, but single target per use

Whisper, Blood Liturgist - creature recusion that nukes for 6 with general out, or mass reanimation if opponen't don't take it.

Profane Prayers - not an X spell, but cleric tribal nuke seems kinda on-theme.

My cleric deck looks similar, but there have been a number of newer clerics that are good role players in such a tribal deck you may be interested in. Order of the Stars , Beloved Chaplain , and even Avacynian Priest can help you build a defense while you're looking for your win condition.

Heck, since I've rebuilt this deck myself, I find that much of the core no longer is included.

If you're looking for some more thoughts on what I did, you can see the deck here: https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/24-07-14-clergy/

The cards I have now are what I want in the deck, what type of creatures would run well in this deck? I've thought about trying to max out Concerted Effort and Odric, Lunarch Marshal with tons of ability and protection (like Vampire Nighthawk and Beloved Chaplain) to make Zurgo Helmsmasher nearly unblockable. Is this a good idea?

Neotrup on does the Deathtouch work here?

Protection form any of the creature's attributes (such as simply protection from creatures found on Beloved Chaplain) will prevent deathtouch damage, as can other damage prevention (like Ethereal Haze), unless damage can't be prevented (such as due to a Leyline of Punishment). Regeneration (like Regeneration), Totem Armor (like Boar Umbra), Indestructible (like Indestructibility) and similar can all save the creature, and don't need to prevent the damage to do so.

But yes, any damage dealt by a creature with deathtouch, including Nature's Way, fighting (like Prey Upon), and giving deathtouch (with something like Basilisk Collar) to Prodigal Pyromancer) will apply the lethal effect.

As an odd rules quirk , if a source with deathtouch deals damage to an indestructible creature that then loses indestructible (perhaps due to Bonds of Mortality) it will forget that the deathtouch made it lethal, but remember the amount of damage for if it's dealt a lethal amount.

704.5h If a creature has toughness greater than 0, and its been dealt damage by a source with deathtouch since the last time state-based actions were checked, that creature is destroyed. Regeneration can replace this event.

Hey Daedalus19876! I have just played these cards and they performed admirably last time.. i am sharing it maybe you would also be interested.

"Ghirapur of Aether Grid" - let's you use your voltron artifacts as spitters! Not to mention gaining full control of static orb and winter orb. i had it replaced the Sublime Archangel.

Beloved Chaplain - protection from creatures is insane! Guaranteed sword swing. I had to remove Argentum Armor for the reason that in my meta, i have not encountered being able to play Stoneforge Mystic and Sigarda's Aid also we follow a certain banlist, and i can't use the fast mana rocks.

carpecanum Great suggestions! Righteous Aura swapped in for the swiftfoot boots, because they've gone up again(they were added to the deck when they were on a .25/NM pricing. Moved them to the maybeboard because it might be because of holiday sales driving up demand.

I love Beloved Chaplain but I couldn't see what to cut just yet, so he's on the maybe board as well.
