Bothersome Quasit and Bedlam allow you to goad unimpeded. Bedlam is a bit ballsy and has the potential to backfire but the quasit is worth its weight in gold here.

Vengeful Ancestor is a stud here.

Beloved Chaplain, Soltari Foot Soldier, Soltari Champion, Soltari Visionary, Spirit en-Dal, Spirit Mantle, and Champion of Lambholt will ensure you get through in combat to goad someone.

Authority of the Consuls in addition to Urabrask makes it so every hastey boy isn't sent your way and makes it impossible for your opponents to play fresh ungoaded blockers.

I've also had really good results out of 'deals combat damage to an opponent' effects due to a lack of blockers once a goad chain gets going. Stuff like Aerial Extortionist, Ancient Gold Dragon, and Scepter of Celebration.

A pet card of mine that's hilariously effective here is Kusari-Gama. It'll get your big boys through or wipe their board. Equip it to Soltari Guerrillas to ensure no one can block ANY of your creatures without immediate retaliation.

Anyways, feel free to check out my list for ideas. Upvotes on any of my decks are appreciated. Marisi the Pimp - (Combat) Trickin' Hoes

StopShot on What are the best defensive …

Recently I've been interested in putting creatures in my EDH decks that are solely dedicated to playing defense, blocking big creatures in combat. On gatherer its easy to type up "Defender" to find a large selection of creatures that do just that, but not every highly defensive creature has that keyword and I wanted to make a post sharing creature cards with great defensive capabilities in any color. (Preferably with cheap CMC's.)

Some great defensive creatures I've found are:

Beloved Chaplain , Commander Eesha , Crypt Sliver , Darksteel Myr , Dawn Elemental , Deepwood Ghoul , Degavolver , Dragon's Eye Savants , Dream Fighter , Everdawn Champion , Giant Ox , Mischievous Poltergeist , Mistmeadow Skulk , Mother of Runes , Phantom Nantuko , Predator Ooze , Seraph of the Sword , Serendib Sorcerer , Serene Master , Sorceress Queen .

Does anyone know some others I could add to this list?

Gideon's Sacrifice will still work. No part of its effects target, but even if it did your Beloved Chaplain would still be a legal target because the thing doing the targeting is an instant, not a creature.

As a follow up, can I use Gideon's Sacrifice and choose my Beloved Chaplain ? Or is this still targeting?

I ask because the oracle text for Gideon's Sacrifice does not use the word target.

Beloved Chaplain has protection from creatures, so I believe it cannot be the target of any creature ability. Lancers en-Kor doesn't specifically say target, but I think the text indicates that I still need to target a creature, so does that mean I cannot target my own Beloved Chaplain ?

Update

A small update to the deck. The following cards were removed:

Beloved Chaplain Didn't do enough in the deck, other than boost the Cleric count.

Cathars' Crusade A great card! But, I have no idea why I put it in this deck, as there is little point in the +1/+1 counters. Going wide and attacking is not what this deck wants to do.

These cards are the replacements

Corpse Knight Allows me to rob life from people when I have creatures come in. Sounds like a plan to me!

Remorseful Cleric Handy graveyard hate, handy in my meta. Keeps the Cleric count up so serves a better purpose than the Beloved Chaplain .
