Decided to give Standard a shot after being out of MtG for a few years - I'd appreciate any advice from people familiar with the format so I can get it right before I buy the cards.
In the 1-drop creature slot, we have Falkenrath Gorger, Village Messenger
(I consider this an ideal turn 1 play), and Soul-Scar Mage. The last one has some utility in helping deal with indestructible creatures (is that a thing in standard currently?), which is nice.
2-drop creatures include Borderland Marauder and the excellent block-denying Earthshaker Khenra. Maybe one game in twenty I'll even manage to eternalize it.
In terms of instants and sorceries, we have Shock and
Incendiary Flow
for straight burn, and it's hard to question 3 damage for 1 mana with Built to Smash. Otherworldly Outburst looks like an incredibly fun card to use when my own creatures are getting removed, or even before burning an opponent's creature, and it synergizes nicely with Fling - as does Built to Smash.
The curve tops out at 3 mana with Sin Prodder to keep cards coming in, as well as Kari Zev's Expertise for some potential shenanigans - though considering it's not always that you'll hit 3 mana with 18 lands, maybe I should use Wrangle instead?
Sideboarding is tough when you don't know what's in the format - but I figure
Processor Assault
is super-secret sideboard tech against something, Renegade Tactics duplicates Earthshaker Khenra's ability while cantriping (perhaps this should be mainboard?),
Blur of Blades
kills weenies while burning the opponent, and Harsh Mentor's effect just seems incredibly powerful - mainboard material instead of Borderland Marauder, perhaps?
