Hi everyone!

We've been chatting about Ixalan here for a while, but on 21 Aug Wizards got into the act with four promo cards (and some upcoming tokens):

And then on 28 Aug they posted a BUNCH more:

So let's talk Ixalan!

Flalafell if you tag Prying Blade with the Ixalan set code, it shows up just fine. Sometimes when a card is newly added, the image doesn't show up if the set isn't selected. Try this:

[[Prying Blade (XLN)]]

Ah okay. Now I see that they're all rates. Interesting. Hopefully it won't lead to a seeding issue where the boxes are easily mappable.

Flalafell says... #3

Ah allright thanks!

I want to see more 'walker on 'walker action!

Ixalan as a whole is by far my favorite set since probably RTR. Many have cited Ixalan's addition of hate cards to the format as a way for standard to move back towards RTR standard, which is said to be one of the best standard environments. Outside of that, the return to Timmy mythics and having constructed playables at rare and uncommon, sweet reprints, seems fun to draft, DINOSAURS and PIRATES, beautiful art, and the great story so far have all led to this being one of the best times in magic's recent history IMO.

dbpunk says... #6

Also, since they're all rares, you're not getting two rares in a pack with any rare card like innistrad/shadow over innistrad.

September 16, 2017 4:28 p.m.

Argy says... #7

You can't REALLY evaluate a set until it's been played in both draft and constructed formats at the Pro level.

This looks like a fun set, to be sure, but as good as RTR?

That remains to be seen.

Arguel's Blood Fast is SO freaking good.

Card draw all day, then a bit of life gain.

Slap another one on the field when the first one flips and BOOM!

You aren't even required to flip the second one, due to the "may" wording.

HARDsofty says... #9

Everybody ready for the planeswalker decklists?

September 18, 2017 9:48 a.m.

Qolorful says... #10

Getting down to 5 life to flip it is really sketchy. Like, at that point you are risking getting killed before you have a chance to activate the life gain. Though it could be particularly good with the mythic White that exchanges life totals for a hilarious win. I love the card draw but I'm definately not sold on the flip side of it

HARDsofty says... #11

Anyone here wanna upgrade me?

September 18, 2017 2:11 p.m.

Argy says... #12

Nope.

It's $5. Upgrade yourself.

Qolorful the card draw is the amazing part of the card.

If you have Aethersphere Harvester in the mix you never get down to 5 life, anyway.

If your Opponent gets you down to 5 life it's a handy "get out of gaol free" card.

Hostage Taker is another card that is so awesome it's not funny.

Argy same...

September 18, 2017 3:48 p.m.

I am also missing the pre-release this time around my son's bday party) but I am looking forward to the "Dino Sized" Draft event October 28-29th.

Who doesn't want to draft with FOUR PACKS!

September 18, 2017 4:04 p.m.

HARDsofty says... #17

I might trade towards release draft.

September 18, 2017 5:34 p.m.

AgentGreen says... #18

I thought I was going to miss pre-release, but the convention I am going to is having a pre-release so I'm not going to miss it :D

Argy says... #19

Lucky, AgentGreen.

September 18, 2017 8:10 p.m.

HARDsofty says... #20

I might go to the pre-release to get the dinosaur 'walker deck.

September 18, 2017 9:01 p.m.

HARDsofty says... #21

If I don't have the money at pre-release for the planeswalker deck, then I'll wait and trade for one at release. Hopefully my LGS still has the deck at that time.

September 19, 2017 9:12 a.m.

HARDsofty says... #22

Planeswalker deck lists get shown today, right?

September 20, 2017 7:32 a.m.

Hey anyone interested in getting a Grimlock for your dino commander deck you can order the Hascon promos starting today.

Hascon Magic Promos

$29.99 is a lot better than the almost $300 they are going for on ebay eh?

September 20, 2017 11:30 a.m.

I originally thought you were affectionately calling Gishath, Sun's Avatar 'Grimlock' like myself, but no they really made a Grimlock card haha.

September 20, 2017 12:26 p.m.

clayperce says... #25

LittleBlueHero,
You may already be aware, but just in case not: The HAZCON promos are Silver Bordered (like Un-sets and the Holiday promos). They're not tournament-legal.

September 20, 2017 12:40 p.m.

They are to promote the Un-set coming out yes. One of the cards is actually in the new set.

And yes I know they aren't tourny legal but they are fun cards to have and I wanted to give players here a chance to snag them at a reasonable price :)

I pre-ordered the dino planeswalker deck! Picking it up this weekend! Wish me luck on the packs I open!

September 21, 2017 9:57 a.m.

I was browsing the Internet today. I saw a picture and I realized - ANGRATH IS A BUFFALO. Seriously, his head is exactly like a buffalo's on Hijack.

Argy says... #29

clayperce just pointed out to me that they misspelt Argy's Blood Fast

September 21, 2017 10:02 p.m.

Very nice art on these cards! Excited for the prerelease

September 22, 2017 10:30 a.m.

HARDsofty says... #31

I might also get the other planeswalker deck for Jace and the basic land for the dinosaur EDH deck.

September 22, 2017 11:28 a.m.

HARDsofty says... #32

Does anybody know why the dinosaurs are feathered and colorful?

September 22, 2017 7:34 p.m.

RazortoothMtg says... #33

bendjohnson: modern research suggest that some dinosaurs had some feathers, not just big scaly things. I think they might have overdone it a little. But this is a fantasy game, and we want colorful dinosaurs dammit!

Just got back from the midnight prerelease. Took 2nd with esper Vampirates!!!

23 people on the roster. I went 4-1; all five games were 2-0 lol. Only the shop owner beat me. The house always wins right?

Allstars: 2x Dire Fleet Hoarder, 2x Legion's Landing, Dreamcaller Siren, Vona, Butcher of Magan, etc. Went aggro with a heavy emphasis on flyers. Seven pieces of control and interrupt. Very, very fun

HIGHLIGHT: on his turn 1 my opponent casts Old-Growth Dryads. My turn 1 I play Perilous Voyage with the extra land he gave me. Turn 2 he tries again; and on mine I cast Vanquish the Weak. By my turn 3 I had 5 lands and played Vona, Butcher of Magan!

Headed to 2HG on sunday with my fiance :)

Good luck this weekend everyone ! ! !

September 23, 2017 5:56 a.m.

HARDsofty says... #37

Yeah, I didn't open anything spectacular.

September 23, 2017 12:27 p.m.

RazortoothMtg says... #38

pool was baaaad man. 4 Skullduggerys. Very few creatures. 2 Kinjalli's Caller and Drover of the Mighty, no good dinos to ramp into. I pullled a mythic! It was Boneyard Parley. I pulled too many Hijacks than 6 packs should ever contain. My 1 multicolored card, Shapers of Nature, was my only merfolk/+1/+1 counter synergy card, so I'd go nowhere with that. Basically lost just because my opponent had bigger dinos, faster pirates, or went wider with Vampires. My dinosaurs were little.

However, did pull a beautiful foil Search for Azcanta. Also foil Siren Stormtamer.

September 23, 2017 2:21 p.m.

Argy says... #39

greyninja yay to partners who play Magic!

September 23, 2017 2:57 p.m.

Suns_Champion says... #40

greyninja I did W/B Vam-Pirates haha! Went 4-0(8-1)!

Turn 1 Duress is killer. Call to the Feast and Rallying Roar won me 4 games.

Removal package was insane: Walk the Plank, Vanquish the Weak, and 2x Contract Killing, along with the Duresses and more discard than you can shake a stick at!

Hope everyone had a great time, win or lose.

September 23, 2017 8:54 p.m.

I just won my MTG prerelease - 4-0 baby! Red-black Pirates rule! I drew a Revel in Riches and Dire Fleet Captain! I won no later than turn 5 every time! Awesome!

September 23, 2017 8:56 p.m.

I beat my friend who pulled 2 mythics. I pulled none!

September 23, 2017 8:57 p.m.

Oh yeah, and Arguel's Blood Fast is the best card draw spell. Hands down.

September 23, 2017 8:59 p.m.

Argy says... #44

TezzeretofCarmot21 I KNOW!

I've been using Arguel's Blood Fast in playtesting and it is SO. GOOD.

Congrats on the win.

Managed to go 2-1 at the pre-release. Nothing exciting and the promo I got was garbage, But I managed to get alot of dinos and the white pseudo-removal (2 of them) I lost the first match but won the next two. All in all a pretty good day

September 23, 2017 10:41 p.m.

windlnk says... #46

clayperce says... #49

This is a cross-post from the Limited forum, but I wanted to share it here too, for anyone playing Two-Headed Giant today:

Just in case you were not already aware, MagicJudges.org has a 2HG FAQ and also puts out a couple of EXCELLENT articles every set specifically about 2HG:

The biggest level-up: "In 2HG sealed it's often correct to choose to draw if you're not hyper aggressive. The two extra cards are a significant difference and it's easier to stall boards."

Here's to a bonkers pool and smooth draws!
