Im playing burn with the obvious white splash for Boros Charm main + Kor Firewalker & Path to Exile in the side. But im not sure what to splash as a third color
Green for Atarka's Command main + Destructive Revelry in side
or
Black for Bump in the Night (Wear / Tear in the side instead of revelry)
April 28, 2015 3:58 p.m.
To be honest, I like black more. There's more strait-up burn. Atarka's Command is great, but ends up usually either being a worse Boros Charm or a Skullcrack.

@ rob1nb green would be considered the stronger choice from a competitive point of view all though you could go black instead including Bump in the Night as well as Gurmag Angler for an unexpected twist.
April 28, 2015 4:03 p.m.
I do have 4 Skullcrack main, so only the pump and 3 life seem relevant. But it seems less consistent no?
April 28, 2015 4:03 p.m.
Green. No contest. It'll save you in situations where you should just lose.
April 28, 2015 4:04 p.m.
@OtakulordAndrew Well, funny you say that cause I've actually been thinking about that for the sideboard :p
What do you guys think, are delve creatures good in burn?
April 28, 2015 4:05 p.m.
FAMOUSWATERMELON says... #10
Delve? I personally don't think so because you have to sacrifice room and speed. But that's a personal opinion.

Green is beast. Naya burn is the most competitive. Atarka's Command can net you from anywhere between 3-6 points of damage.

Here's a delve card for red:
- Depths of the Flames —
- Instant
- Delve
- Depths of the Flames deals 5 damage to target creature or player.
April 28, 2015 4:09 p.m.
Delve has just been a mechanic that does really well most of the time. Murderous Cut, Logic Knot, Tombstalker, Treasure Cruise, and Dig Through Time. Two of those are banned and if anything red was ever printed it would probably be banned too.

delve is an iffy situation in burn as it can let you get value out of the quick use of your burn and small creatures aswell as your fetch lands in triple color burn, but sometimes you want to just be drawing another burn spell. I have seen it do alright in rbw burn as it can be an interesting deck running the usual rw burn shell aswell as Bump in the Night, Faithless Looting, and Gurmag Angler, I've only played against the deck a few times although it seemed like a worthwhile deck.
April 28, 2015 4:13 p.m.
Omg, I would love that delve card!
Would this be any realistic?
Power and blood -
Sorcery - Rare
Power and blood deals 5 damge to target opponent.
You lose half of your life rounded up.
Would this be way too good/bad in modern?
Also, is white really necessary? What about just going R/G burn?
April 28, 2015 4:14 p.m.
True but Treasure Cruise and Dig Through Time were banned shortly after their release. They were proved to be too powerful. Treasure red is a burn deck where they ran all red and white except for Treasure Cruise Which was the only blue spell in there.
April 28, 2015 4:16 p.m.
I think that Power and Blood would be good. In the early game it does more damage to you than your opponent but late game it really does damage. Plus the lack of targeting does make it not as powerful. So i would say it is a good card.

Any burn spell that deals 5 damage to a player is too powerful. I would be very satisfied though if Femme_Fatales design was and dealt 4 damage.
April 28, 2015 4:21 p.m.
@Femme_Fatale: Better idea:
Fiery Impact
Instant
Delve
Fiery Impact does 3 damage to target creature or player.
April 28, 2015 4:23 p.m.
I'm with lemmingllama on this one, but even what he made seems too good.
April 28, 2015 4:24 p.m.
Another Lightning Bolt won't make the cut. It needs to deal 4 damage. Then it could be good.
April 28, 2015 4:26 p.m.
Lightning Axe cant target players... Wonder why that would be.. :3
April 28, 2015 4:28 p.m.
@NorthernRaven: The card is good. It will often just be another bolt, but it also sits outside of the range of eidolon.

quesobueno123 says... #29
Take it from a burn player who used to play black. Green is much, much better.
April 28, 2015 4:29 p.m.
I messed with Jund Burn... Im liking Naya better, with just a Blood Crypt mainboard as another bad Mountain for when I sideboard stuff. :P
April 28, 2015 4:30 p.m.
I was comparing it to that delver 5 damage one Scorprix. :P Lightning Axe turn 1 with an extra land or w/e not OP if yeh could dome with it?

I think saying Abrupt Decay warped the format is horribly wrong. Tons of entire decks die to Abrupt Decay and are still successful. With the exception of Manlands (which it doesn't hit in any deck) Rock, Infect, Affinity, Burn, 8rack, Faeries, Zoo, Hatebears.... The list goes on and on... Plus being able to Abrupt Decay your own Phyrexian Arena or Bitterblossom in a pinch is quite nice...
Treasure Cruise warped the format.
April 28, 2015 4:33 p.m.
WOW. I read that card wrong. I thought you had to discard your WHOLE hand... :P
April 28, 2015 4:33 p.m.
lemmingllama says... #35
@Scorprix The issue with your design is that there is no reason to play it instead of other burn spells. Lightning Bolt is superior in every way other than maybe if they try to Counterbalance you. Typically delve cards are other cards that cost more, but are cheaper due to being able to delve.
Maybe for four damage? Same function as Boros Charm but it can hit creatures and you don't need white mana
April 28, 2015 4:33 p.m.
Black does not help against burns biggest enemies - Leyline, Batterskull, etc.
Green does.
Black adds more of the same - a bit of damage. Green helps you diversify. Diversification is key.
April 28, 2015 4:33 p.m.
Good point, it didn't warp it, but decay still fucks-up a LOT of stuff...
April 28, 2015 4:34 p.m.
I just lazily looked through the last 10 burn decks posted on mtgtop8. One ran black.
April 28, 2015 4:36 p.m.
@lemmingllama: I like your idea, but what about:
Fiery Impact
Delve
Fiery Impact deals damage to target player.
April 28, 2015 4:37 p.m.
ChiefBell, I dropped the black burn spells from my list.. my Blood Crypt is purely for 3 sideboard spells.
Im still testing them though.. My meta is aggro heavy af.. so..
April 28, 2015 4:41 p.m.
lemmingllama says... #41
@Scorprix Ooh, I would run the hell out of these. Well, two copies in the mainboard, but still.
April 28, 2015 4:42 p.m.
I think a delve burn spell should be atleast 4 dmg, otherwise its just another bolt
April 28, 2015 4:44 p.m.
lemmingllama says... #45
@Scorprix No, it just gives burn a little inevitability, similar to how Shrine of Burning Rage used to turn spells you cast into death.

im running grixis twin. should i splash green for thragtusk?
April 28, 2015 4:52 p.m.
APPLE01DOJ says... #48
I like Grim Lavamancer over the shrine but have seen the shrine ran as a 4 of before.
April 28, 2015 4:53 p.m.
APPLE01DOJ says... #49
No you should splash green for Tarmogoyf and Scavenging Ooze xD
April 28, 2015 4:55 p.m.
So by popular Oppinion:
Is RDW/Burn competitive against Abzan? ...Or is there a better option?
ChiefBell says... #1
Putrefy - If you have access to Terminate - use it! It's fantastic and so very strong. However you must realise that a lot of decks do not have access to it and in those situations both Abrupt Decay and Path to Exile must fill in.
Also you analysis of most played spells is fatally flawed based on the fact that mono colour spells will always be more popular than dual coloured spells. Venn diagrams.
