How did your prerelease go?

Oath of the Gatewatch sealed impressed me. Was very different than BFZ sealed, but in a good way I think. I went to the midnight release and got fourth place running a Grixis deck. I pulled a foil Chandra, Flamecaller from it which was really sweet. Sunday I am going to be playing two-headed giant which I am very interested in seeing how it differs. So how were your experiences?

I had fun, I did like it a lot more than BFZ limited. Went 3-1-0 and got 8th playing B/W Allies. Opened a Wasteland and Kozilek's Return in my pool. Wasteland surprisingly won me a few games. locking opponents out of the 1 colorless land they where running, i assume they where running 1-2, but they only saw one.) and in my first game destroyed the land that says "(2) + tap: Draw a card if you have no cards in hand." when we went to top deck mode.

My friend and I did a two headed giant and made semi finals/ 4th out of 13 teams. I got a kalitas as my promo foil and my friend pulled a foil waste basic. BW allies was fun

I went 4-0 (8-1 in games) at my prerelease tonight, winning the tournament on breakers (a friend of mine also 4-0'd; we split prize packs since it was only 4 rounds). I didn't pull any truly bomb cards, but I would say Beastcaller Savant, Stormchaser Mage, Jwar Isle Avenger, and Gravity Negator were stellar. Negator was fantastic with green beaters, and the other cards were good as well.

I went 3-1 with a deck featuring Nissa, Voice of Zendikar, Conduit of Ruin, Oath of Nissa, and World Breaker as my promo. Then I opened another Nissa in my prizes and managed to trade for a promo Nissa afterwards.

Did any cards or themes surprise you guys as pretty good at prerelease?

I saw a lot of UB. Granted, I repeatedly beat it, but it was heavily played among the top players at my shop. Eldrazi are still good. I was pretty impressed with green in sealed: there were many times that I won from behind just because my creatures were bigger. I am not sure that it stays the same when one moves into draft. Surge is good. Red has a lot of good burn spells to deal with creature threats.

Spatial contortion is a great card. Fall of the Titans is a crazy bomb. Totally worth the splash for red, even if you don't have lots of ways to trigger surge easily.

For reference, here is my deck list from the prerelease. I didn't realize how heavily creature-centric my deck was until now, but it proved effective.

On another note, the friend of mine who came in second with a 4-0 record played an Esper Tokens deck that was just brutal. He pulled a Gideon and several Sky Spawners alongside a heavy removal suite that just made his deck impervious to loss (8-0 in games).

I won my local 2HG prerelease with my buddy. I played Naya Allies, while my friend had the most insane U/B Eldrazi list. 2 Drowner of Hope, 3 Oblivion Strike, and Wasteland Strangler are the most notable cards I can recall. In my prize packs I pulled an expedition Rugged Prairie. All in all, Oath was super fun to play, and hopefully I'll get to do another prerelease tomorrow.

I've been to both the midnight release and the noon one. I went 3-3 and top 16'd with a UBr deck featuring promo/regular Ruins of Oran-Rief, Mirrorpool, Dust Stalker, Eldrazi Obligator as the rares, and such nasties as a pair of Mindmelters and Blinding Drone.

Second time I 4-2'd my way into top 8 by winning off the back of another Eldrazi Obligator, Deceiver of Form, Bane of Bala Ged, Conduit of Ruin, Embodiment of Fury, and Cyclone Sire.

At the end of today, a very long day due to unforeseen circumstances, I've managed to win 15 packs with high hopes of continuing the streak tomorrow!

This was my first limited tournament /prerelease. What is the prize pool usually made of? I came in first won 4 rounds 8-1 in games and all I got was some dice. They said they ran out of boosters. Is this normal? I really don't want to do this again if that is all I get.

January 17, 2016 2:47 a.m.

You went 8-1 and only got some dice? That's wrong. If I were you I'd go back to see if they had gotten more packs later, and explain your situation. I just took second with my teammate at 2HG, me playing U/B eldrazi and him on R/W alliesish. We had a bunch of bombs that we never drew into, but the decks were still built pretty well, and we were decent at playing them. We got 3 packs each, and it was his first prerelease, my second, and our first time playing 2HG. Going back Sunday to play with another friend.

I was thinking about going back. I literally got the same prize as they guy in 4th place. The most annoying part was that they did not announce the prizes till the 4th round of the tournament. I would not have played for a change to win $3 in dice.

Second pre-release event for me was two headed giant. Went 4-0-0 Opened nothing relevant in my packs but my partner got a Kozilek's Return in his prize packs.

I placed 2nd at my local shop's midnight prerelease. I ran U/W eldrazi control and pulled a foil of the white eldrazi that blinks things as my promo (was really stupid with the 0/6 wall that animates a land when it ETBs). Reality Smasher and 2x of the eldrazi that make a target creature unable to block it were my main bombs, they really cleaned house!

Also, the 1/3 eldrazi that taps creatures down was an absolute allstar. Opened 2 of them and I think they're really what let me place so high.

(sorry, forgot the names of some of the creatures)

Won 7 packs with the only noteworthy pull being Mirrorpool.

My pool was great, I played Jund with Reality Smasher (all-star) and 3 copies of Tajuru Pathwarden, and other great rares like Eldrazi Obligator and Bearer of Silence. My promo was Hissing Quagmire. Other rares in my packs were Wandering Fumarole, Shambling Vent, and Canopy Vista. In the packs I also got a Cascade Bluffs. Pretty sweet!

I went 3-0-1 (my round 4 opponent and I drew to guarantee 2nd and 3rd places). Ended up placing second and got Wooded Foothills and Dust Bowl in my prize packs.

3 expeditions, 3 man lands (1 date-stamp foil), and one battle land. What an amazing pre-release.

Went 4-1 at my two-headed giant prerelease getting second place and eight packs between the two of us. I pulled Kozilek's Return, which was sweet. My partner ran a beautiful BW Allies deck with Ob Nixilous and I ran a pretty sweet UR Surge / tempo list.

1st pack of oath, expedition Ancient Tomb, Craig and I proceeded to go 3-1 for 8 packs.

January 18, 2016 12:20 p.m.

I did rather well. Played WB life gain, partner played WU Allies/fliers. I ran an Ayli, Remorseless Punishment and really just tried to get as much damage as I could early on so my partner's Deepfathom Skulker could swing for lethal. My pool was pretty bad, but we into the finals and decided to split the prizes. Pulled a Kozilek's Return from my winnings.

aaron.jacob Lol, that sucks man the thing with the judge is funny. The complete opposite happened with me at my two headed giant pre-release. I'm friends with all the employees at my store, so he came over near the end of deck building and was like "how's it going" and I said you tell me and handed him my partner and I's completed decks. He flipped through both of them, nodding approvingly, and then told us having seen multiple prerelease a of this set all weekend he couldn't see how we wouldn't make at least top four, if not take the whole thing. We almost got there for him, second place.

I went to the three pre-releases

Saturday Afternoon: Absolute horror. When you pull nothing bigger than a Cloud Manta and no good removal (seriously, no oblivion strike, devour in flame, grasp of darkness etc) other than 2 copies of Tar Snare, your deck fold SO bad during pre-release. No notable pulls either cries

Sunday Morning: Slightly better, manage to build a BW splash green ally deck. Went 1-2-1 in the end. Ran into someone with Ulamog and then a Kozilek. Manage to pull the infinite combo on 3 people with Eldrazi Displacer, Brood Mother and Cutthroat.

Sunday Twin-Headed: Went 1-2-1 again. Other games lost to a really REALLY big Fall of the Titans (we got hit for 26 life at the biggest, the other one was 20). Also ran into a team with not so many creatures but ran 15 removal spells. Needless to say, our board never matieralize cause we never had a board to work with :(

Overall: Not fun cause I didn't do great, but had fun attempting to pull random stuff on at people.

Awful, as expected. I'm absolutely garbage at Limited and usually make extremely poor deckbuilding decisions. That said, did 2HG for a second flight and we managed to Gruesome Slaughter a stalled board, leaving our opponents with a single scion and us with a legion of beefy Eldrazi. That was fun!
