Advertise your Primer!

Commander (EDH) forum

Posted on Feb. 22, 2022, 9:59 a.m. by Guerric

Hi everyone! The popularity of the "Advertise your Deck" thread made me thing that maybe a similar thing could be done for primers specifically. It occurred to me that tappedout is home to so many well-written and carefully thought-through primers, but it can sometimes be difficult to find them, especially as the algorithms tend to favor recent interaction. I thought it might be cool to make a place where everyone can post links to primers they have written about Commander decks specifically. I'd certainly love to have an easy hub where I can just find primers on commanders of interest and not just lists of cards. I'm also happy to upvote any lists of primers in the comments and the primers themselves to increase visibility. I'll post mine in the comments as well, and when I finish future primers I will add them to the list. Feel free also to post other user's primers that you have found helpful as they are sure to appreciate it!

Hi all! Here are the full primers that I have written to date. I will probably add others in the future-

1) Inalla, Archmage Ritualist Wizards Tribal Control/Combo- https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/the-archmages-sanctum-inalla-wizard-tribal/

2) Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow Ninjas Tribal Aggro- https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/yuriko-ninjas-tribal/

3) Tuvasa the Sunlit Pillowfort Enchantress Control/Combo- https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/21-05-20-tuvasa-enchantress/

4) Scion of the Ur-Dragon Dragons Tribal Creature Cheat Battlecruiser Aggro- https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/scion-of-the-ur-dragon-blitz/

Omniscience_is_life I hope it takes off! I was looking for a good Kadena primer and there was a highly rated one on tappedout that was great which it nonetheless took me too long to find.

And I see your primer got some upgrades! Nice work!

Here's mine. It features Feldon of the Third Path, my favorite commander, and touches up on the lore behind him, too. There's a lot of context just in the card art and flavor text alone.

Several guys in my playgroup are big Feldon fans, so I will definitely pass this great list on! It's great to see mono-red at its best in edh!

brandonplaysmagic

I also have a friend who is into stompy, and I can relate to it being hard to keep it resilient to removal and dealing with threats. I had to work out all of those things in my Ezuri, Renegade Leader deck (primer forthcoming), and it looks like you did an awesome job with a more stompy version. I'll pass your list on to a friend who has been trying to build a similar deck but dealing with similar problems!

Thanks again to everyone for contributing to this thread!

I'm actually going to repost my primers here since before I listed urls like a newb.

1) [Primer] Casting the Mythal: An Inalla Guide

This is an Inalla, Archmage Ritualist deck that has a wizards tribal approach, and is a control deck that wins via some nasty combos.

2) [Primer] Crouching One-Drop, Hidden Ninja *Update*

This is a ninjas tribal deck that wins by doing what Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow does best- drawing cards to smash face!

3) [Primer] Enchantress's Pillowfort: A Tuvasa Guide

This is a Tuvasa the Sunlit enchantress deck that wins via powerful, enchantment-based combos, and plays out like a pillowfort control deck.

4) [Primer] Unleash the Dragon! A Scion Guide

This is an aggressive battlecruiser deck helmed by Scion of the Ur-Dragon with a toolbox approach, that is masterful at cheating dragons out of the graveyard to beat our opponents into oblivion! It makes full use of Scion's ability to deal with whatever roadblocks come up along the way.

To be completely honest, I'm not really sure what constitutes a "primer" versus a deck description. I have a ton of decks but only a handful of them are public on here. The ones that are have pretty lengthy descriptions.

I'll link my highest rated one here and if it qualifies as a primer, I'll link a few more (not all of them, probably. I have like 15 decks on here... Unless someone wants me to, that is!)

My deck:

It should be noted that this was the first one I ever did and it has been pointed out to have some errors. Gonna update it once I add in some Neon Dynasty stuff.

I apologize in advance if this isn't a primer.

February 22, 2022 5:54 p.m. Edited.

Guerric says... #10

Your Rebbec and Glacian list is definitely a primer! There is a lot of detail and sub-menus. I have text deck guides for most of my decks, usually once I go through how to use it and play it in each phase of the game is where I upgrade it to primer, but that's just me!

Unfortunately, I don't have many Commander primers in a state where I'd like advertise. Still, there are two of my primers I wanted to show off, both unfinished.

February 22, 2022 6:22 p.m.

Guerric Thank you! My husband is a proud blue/black player and thrives on removal, so I’ve had to adapt my play style because you’re right, I love stompy. Thanks for the thread!

February 22, 2022 7:19 p.m.

Gidgetimer says... #13

The "A" Team (Tayam Rube Goldberg Combo) Is the only deck I have written a detailed enough how-to-play that I feel it rises to perhaps being a primer for the deck style. The list hasn't been updated for a while and doesn't reflect the current version of the deck. It still holds up as a explanation of the play style and a playable base that can be built upon. In the end isn't that what we all really want from a primer?

February 22, 2022 10:09 p.m.

Guerric says... #14

Gidgetimer That is what we want! Tayam has always seemed fun, and Abzan is a color combo that I've never built but always been interested in. This looks like it has lots of synergies and paths to fun shenanigans!

February 23, 2022 1:32 p.m.

Guerric says... #18

seshiro_of_the_orochi These all seem like such fun decks conceptually, and it's great to see how you redeemed bears by putting Goreclaw to such good use! I see you are also a fan of tribal decks, and I can relate! Five of my thirteen decks are tribes, and it just feels right. It's also been cool to see more tribal support with cards like Secluded Courtyard lately. Thanks for the contribution!

February 23, 2022 3:49 p.m.

KBK7101 says... #19

All three of those look great! I've been trying to build an Archelos deck for the longest time now. I want to make mine more themed around the concept of time, though. Aeon Engine, Time Stop, Discontinuity etc. I still have no idea what the endgame is while trying to actively avoid some sort of infinite turn nonsense.

Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma is one of my favorite cards from M19 and it reminds me a lot of when I started playing in early 2019 (M19 and Amonkhet were sets I bought a lot into when I started). Hopefully this thread can help it get to 100 upvotes!

Moraug, Fury of Akoum is another great one. I debated building him when ZNR released but opted for tossing him in one of the decks I already had. Still cool to see him on his own, though. Terrain Generator and Nahiri's Lithoforming work wonders in that deck, I'm sure!

Come to think of it, I think this thread could use a "You must leave a comment/+1/suggestion" clause much like the regular "Advertise your deck!" thread. Would help to spark more conversation around the ones posted rather than people just posting and leaving. (No offense to anyone that's already done that of course, just throwing the idea out there.)

These are four of the five decks in my mono-colored Legends of Dominaria cycle. The one (Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, of course!) is still set to private and has a primer that's a WIP at the moment. I can update it here once it's done. Would love any sort of feedback on them as they're some of my favorite decks both in gameplay and flavor. :)

For a second I thought you had already built and amassed a primer for the newest member of the Umezawa clan, and then I realized it was something even cooler! I love it when people can older legends into something amazing in commander.

golgarigirl

Holy Cow, that really is budget! I don't think I've ever seen anyone make a competitive commander deck for that price range. It's especially refreshing to see someone helping to make the format more accessible to newer players who aren't going to drop big money on a deck. Any one of my high school students in the gaming club I advise could afford this deck. Awesome work!

For a while, the precon commander decks were pretty unimpressive for the cost...I think I was muttering to my group that I could do better for less. And thus the deck was born! It's also nice to have something I can lend out at FNM or whatever and if someone walks away with it or damages a card I'm not down a serious investment.

You've definitely succeeded at beating out many of the precons! I see the utility in that as well. I often let my students play my decks, and thankfully the environment is controlled enough that I don't have to worry about it walking away. It would definitely not be the same if I took it to an FNM. Even so I am always a little bit nervous. Great work again!

I've been on a primer writing kick this week (it's been a break from school), so I'm hoping to add my Ezuri, Renegade Leader Elfball primer soon, then my Teysa, Orzhov Scion one. I also have one in the mental works for Trynn, Champion of Freedom and Silvar, Devourer of the Free. I've been playing Ezuri almost since the beginning, I played Elves in modern for awhile, and I often lend the deck to students who are learning the format, so I think that's going to be a good one!
