My first foray into UB control in modern! I'm not usually a control player, but when I came up with this deck idea I fell in love.

Lich Lord of Unx

Lets talk Zombie Wizards! There is quite a few of them, but not too many good ones that cost 2. Blood Scrivener is the best one in my opinion, but an argument could be made for Yixlid Jailer . Expecially with the modern meta game being overrun with Arclight Phoenix decks and Dredge decks. From testing, Blood Scrivener doesn't activate often, but it does make Wizard's Retort cost less. The only other 2 CMC creature is Voidmage Prodigy , which works exceptionally well with Lich Lord of Unx . Every turn you have a counter spell.

Moving on to the 3 CMC creatures, I have 2 zombie lords. Death Baron , another zombie wizard for Wizard's Retort and Voidmage Prodigy . And Diregraf Captain , not a wizard, but does add 1 lose of life to every Voidmage Prodigy counter. Lich Lord of Unx not only is a zombie wizard, but he makes them also! And in testing he destroyed a Bottled Cloister + Ensnaring Bridge lockout with his second ability, even with a Gideon of the Trials emblem out. I guess the odd creature in the deck is Sedraxis Alchemist . It's tempo, and a zombie wizard. The downside is needing a blue permanent out, luckily 10 of the creatures in the deck are blue.

Wizard's Retort

Moving on from creatures, we have our counterspell package. Mana Leak for early game, and Wizard's Retort is almost always actual Counterspell (hopefully it is added in modern horizons). 2 Cryptic Command for good measure. Our removal package, Cast Down for most creatures, and Dismember for anything Cast Down can't take care of. 2 Damnation to reset the board if need be. And of course, what UB control deck would be finished without Thoughtseize .
