Testing and Changes —July 14, 2017

After testing, I kept running into other slower decks that were't creature heavy so I dialed back some of the creature kill for more counters and draw power. The sideboard can be pulled in to help deal with creatures fairly easily... Initial testing makes this build seem a lot stronger.

Why only one Nicol Bolas, God-Pharaoh? you could draw it easier if you had more

Mostly because of how expensive he is. He's definitely a powerhouse, but I don't want to see him till late game and Torrential Gearhulk is definitely Plan A

I don't really play control, but I am curious about there being no hand disruption.

Don't need. Kill/Counter everything Then rek

Vulcea, like he said, theres a lot of counters and kill spells in the deck so its unneeded. Especially with the only good hand disruption spells being Collective Brutality and to a much lesser extent, Harsh Scrutiny. Neither of which are instants and having fewer instants makes my Torrential Gearhulk worse.

No copies of Disallow? I'd definitely run some sort of three mana hard counter in addition to the two copies of Supreme Will. I'd also run two to three copies of Unlicensed Disintegration because none of your removal besides Hour of Devestation and Nicol Bolas hits anything very big. Other considerations would be Cut / Ribbons and also Never//Return to deal with resolved planeswalkers, though perhaps that one is purely sideboard but I could see it as a one of main. Dark Intimations as a one of main would also be pretty cool.

Good luck!

something like Release the Gremlins in the sideboard for vehicles maybe?

mahanhen: Abrade in the mainboard stops artifacts pretty well. However if your meta is saturated with them, then I'd take out To the Slaughter and replace it with By Force.

Zaueski,
TOO MUCH BLUE AND BLACK. NOT ENOUGH GREEN.
STILL, NICE TO SEE THE OTHER CLANS CAN WRECK STUFF TOO!

CRUSH THEM!

I think Sweltering Suns would be better in your mainboard. It still deals 3 damage to everything, but it has the ability to be cycled if you run into a control mirror. You could run 2 Sweltering Suns main board and use that extra slot for another Nicol Bolas. Drop the HoD and insert 2 additional Sweltering Suns or Radiant Flames.

Sweltering Suns is which is a lot rougher on the mana base. Hour of Devastation is basically our Fumigate and comes down later so it doesn't pressure the mana base. It also goes higher than both Sweltering Suns and Radiant Flames and kills indestructibles and planeswalkers which is super relevant. Playtest with the card and you'll see how amazing it is. Zombies, G/B Midrange, and G/R Gods all scale out of the 3 drop wraths too easily for me to rely on only them. The cycling cost on Suns is also way too expensive for it to truly matter and there's always games 2 and 3 when I'm fighting through control mirrors.

First off great deck, Love it.

With the Grixis Colossus decks starting to pick up steam I'd maybe suggest playing 2-3 By Force as they destroy the deck and are decent against Mardu Vehicles.

Also is Tragic Lesson better than Glimmer of Genius?

July 6, 2017 10:07 p.m.

Zaueski says... #17

It goes with the Kefnet sideboard plan better and is a turn faster despite seeing less cards... without the additional energy cards I don't see a reason to run Glimmer of Genius instead but testing could prove me wrong

Zaueski this seems like the usual UR Control deck, with a few new cards + black for bolas and removal.

I'm looking for a good grixis (non-torrential gearhulk) deck. Like rakdos control splash U or something. The UR shell is jammed with counters, which works with T-Ghulk at top end, so just throwing in bolas doesn't really work. I know such a deck would work, just dbf'd putting it together from scratch. Any ideas?

Have you thought about running Kefnet the Mindful? He's really strong in a control build.

July 7, 2017 2 p.m.

I think that this deck right here is amazing, I also think that a copy of Jace, Unraveler of Secrets would make it even better!

WalkingPutoguro, I agree. I just hate brewing a deck that includes cards that will rotate out soon after creation.

July 7, 2017 2:45 p.m.

mastermew Oh man someone finally understands how I feel XD. I also hate it, but Jace Is an amazing card without a doubt! And even if it is for a short period of time this card will be really useful in this deck. :)

Very nice, this deck has real potential. A great move in the right direction to possible competitive Grixis Control. +1

My first suggestion is to cut some of the narrow counterspells, 2x Negate and 1x Essence Scatter (put more Negate in the sideboard) for 2x more Censor and 1x more Abrade. I think you want both Censor and Abrade as 4 ofs because they give you a great turn two play or turn three play in combination with either Fatal Push, Magma Spray or Unsummon. Censor is much better in the early game where it can counter something than the late game.

The scry 2 of Glimmer of Genius is very good, it's almost like drawing a third card. Glimmer and Torrential Gearhulk are proven to be broken together and even though you're not using an energy strategy Glimmer is still nuts.

In my opinion Supreme Will is better than Tragic Lesson because it gives you options and it doesn't make you discard or bounce a land. Although you're not drawing two cards from Will you get to dig four cards deep for one which is as good because of the added benefit of a pseudo Mana Leak if you want that instead. Scry and dig are good to find Hour of Devastation and/or Bolas.

I don't think you need main deck Radiant Flames unless your meta is filled with Monument or Zombie decks because it's not good in the Temur Energy, Golgari Energy or Mardu Vehicles matchups and you really don't want to have to tap out for it. I suggest moving Flames to the sideboard clearing some space for more instant answers such as Unsummon.

My last suggestion is 4x Wandering Fumarole, cut 2x Evolving Wilds for 2x more Fumarole.

Good luck with your deck.

Tragic Lesson comes down earlier and supports the Kefnet the Mindful plan post board, Censor is fantastic on T2 or T3 and not much else, in the testing I've been doing I've always had targets for my counterspells so until that drastically changes I think I'll leave that alone. Radiant Flames probably can get pushed to the side, I'll consider running a third Censor instead of the third Radiant Flames. Evolving Wilds is great for finding my other colors and its a great way to slow roll a revolted Fatal Push when I need too. Wandering Fumarole is still a tap land and I only own two so I'm hesitant to attempt to buy into more of them when it might not even be optimal.

I did some playtesting against my deck Colossus of Devastation and had some epic and fun matches. Games often were pretty evenly matched and much of my deck winning was dependent upon my deck being able to combo off and you not have a counter or me comboing off with counter backup post board. Once I dropped a few Colossi your best answer was abrade, but I would agree with one of the other commenters in saying a card such as By Force or Release the Gremlins would do well in this deck. Stinks that they aren't instant but sometimes you just need an answer. Really sold deck though. I look forward to seeing the progression. Happy Brewing!
