Got my start playing a RG Madness deck with the same cards! Fun deck to pilot!

Though not of the erra, Forbid and Circular Logic I've seen pull their share of weight, especially in the old Psychatog decks!

I agree Magnanimous... the more I brew/playtest FoF the more im seeing that the Graveyard is more of a bonus rather than focus (or at least it can be).... I think thats another aspect of the card that further separates it from Gifts Ungiven; because I get to pick what goes in the graveyard rather than the opponent.

@dingusdingo Thank you so much for really going above and beyond with your comment! Very helpful and will check out your lists.... very thought provoking with the concept of using it alongside cards that fuel from the hand/handsize like Psychatog/Sturmgeist.

Fact or Fiction is a very good card, but is mostly eclipsed by Gifts Ungiven being in the format for the same cost and more recently . Regardless, I am rather knowledgeable on FoF and will aim to enlighten

Looking at FoF

  • Costs 4 mana
  • Instant Speed
  • Always digs 5 deep
  • You can always get the best card of 5 no matter what
  • You can always get at least 3 cards into hand no matter what
  • The reject pile goes to the graveyard
  • Opponent is making actions based upon partial information
  • Put into hand effect dodges some draw hate effects like Underworld Dreams or Spirit of the Labyrinth

So what benefits do we get from using FoF?

  • We can play it at opponent's end step, allowing us to hold mana for interaction if we need it.
  • All 5 cards move from the library into either the hand or the graveyard. This means they move from an unknown zone to a known zone, making them much easier for us to interact with. Cards that play well from the GY or cards that interact with the GY work extremely well with FoF
  • Fact or Fiction can always be used to put at least 3 cards in the hand. Your opponents are only able to split piles into either 5-0, 4-1, or 3-2. This effect is strong especially when used alongside cards that fuel from the hand. Classically, FoF has been used alongside Psychatog for this reason. In limited, it was paired with Nostalgic Dreams, which needs cards

I have taken the liberties of brewing two lists for you. The first adds FoF to a Pyromancer Ascension build, using Underworld Breach as the graveyard fuel and FoF synergy piece. Facts from the Underworld. The second deck plays around with graveyard recursion to use FoF as a big draw card, Fictitious Heartbeat. Happy brewing

Hey!

That's a really solid deck, congratulations!

I especially like the inclusion of Psychatog. It seems highly synergistic with the deck's strategy.

A few considerations:

Haste is incredibly important. What's even more important is the fact that its enabler has as low of a CMC as possible. For this reason, although Yahenni, Undying Partisan could have some synergy with the deck if you are not including too many looting effects, I think you would be better off with a Nether Traitor or, even better, a Gingerbrute. Being 1 or 2 mana cheaper means you can transition from them to something else with ease. On top of that, they also provide evasion.

Nighthowler seems to me a little too situational and unreliable. Your graveyard shouldn't be too stocked with creatures, as it would be risky. As regards your opponents', it's too dependent on the matchup.

As regards the Laboratory Maniac package, I would rather go for Demonic Consultation and Tainted Pact instead of Mirror-Mad Phantasm and Mesmeric Orb. It seems faster and more reliable.

Good job and keep your list up to date!

Although then Psychosis Crawler would be you only win con. I do like Zombie Infestation better than Psychatog . Multiple attackers and blockers are harder to deal with than one big one.

Psychatog is a classic, but without some form of evasion or creature removal, he'll get chump-blocked a lot. Maybe add some protection instead, such as Lightning Greaves . They'd help with your tappy guys too.

Hello onehitterquiter! I had a lot of the Madness cards of the initial draft, but quickly found out through testing that they made the deck play a lot different than what I'm trying to do. Madness cards want your enabler (in this case Psychatog ) to live for several turns in order to accrue value from them, in contrast with what Tog wants to be doing, which is out-tempoing an opponent and then one-shotting them. Stinkweed Imp seems like a pretty good value creature that can come back to hold off oppossing fliers while filling the graveyard, and Death Denied seems like a good engine. However, having so few creatures and also wanting to fit in Grim Harvest , I fear a worse Death Denied in Shattered Crypt isn't going to cut it for now. Helm of the Ghastlord doesn't protect nor provide unblockability, is very easy to 2-for-1 since it costs 4 mana, and won't provide much value if we want to one-shot the opponent. Vanishing is interesting as an extra protection piece.

Hey Eisenherz! When I think of that card, the deck that it goes with, and what it does in a multiplayer game, I'm not super impressed. We can't ignore it being in the best color combo so it has that going for it. Winning by pumping up and slapping someone in one shot is what it wants to do. It doesn't keep its pump to finish the other 2 players and it doesnt come with its own evasion or protection. Before each kill-swing it needs to fight removal ontop of needing some sort of evasion. The lists is being created still and what is shown here is a rough draft made awhile ago with some newer cards just dumped in for safekeeping. If the final list includes a "Below Average" tier then Psychatog would be on it because it isn't trash. However, I've been leaning more towards cutting the tiers after "Average".
