Khans Wish List

Can't wait to replace Ajani's Presence for Trumpet Blast. When I get 4, I'll move the Gods Willing to the sideboard to accommodate them.

Bounce cards aren't working like I was thinking

xxKEPTxMANxx, 11 years ago

After playing the deck 10 times I have held in hand my bounce cards. Never really needed to cast them, so I'm taking them out. Removed: Temporal Fissure, Silent Departure, Boomerang, Disperse and Unsummon. Added: Essence Scatter, Remove Soul, Domestication, Illusionist's Gambit and Crystal Ball.

4-3 at Gen Con Indy 2014

HaazdaGerfson, 11 years ago

I tried this deck out at a fairly large Modern tournament before making some changes to it. Considering this deck is nowhere near anything in meta and I got a lot of surprised looks, I'm pretty satisfied with how I did! If I made some of the changes earlier and had more practice with the deck I could have probably pulled of 5-2 or maybe even 6-1.

As for now, my only considerations are taking out the Evershrike's because there are already enough 5 cmc creatures in Deathbringer Liege and Divinity of Pride.

End of the win-spree

adventfaith, 11 years ago

Come rotation, this deck is longer going to be maintained. It is losing it's power and drive with primespeaker Zegana, Master Biomancer, burning-tree emmisary, Cyclonic Rift, Kalonian Hydra.

I plan on shifting it into modern, and just letting it sit there as proof that I made simic viable as a competitive deck in my local gamestore.

Maybe i'll come back to it one day and revive it.

Thanks for the help on it guys!

Testing

The_Mormegil, 11 years ago

After some testing, this deck goldfishes on turn 5-7. 6-7 is common, but 5 isn't that strange on a good hand. If the opponent has no blockers you can win faster and more consistently with a closer circle, but if your opponent has half a brain he'll keep a blocker after turn 3-4. You have the option of killing with ornithopter, with all your infinity/infinity creatures mass charging with haste, or with crater's claw. Remember that you can draw infinite cards off of Karametra's Favor too if you need it. I considered the 0-cost artifacts but I don't think they add much. The all-temple mana base makes this slower, but more consistent (since you need to hit a few key cards). Disciple of Deceit is amazing and the main reason this deck is consistent. Chord of Calling acts as Disciple 5-8 most of the times, but you can also discard it to disciple to get the ascendancy. All comments and critiques helpful. In particular, I don't like the Pleas, they're slow and clunky, but the main reason I have a hard time going off is when I can't draw Ascendancy. Ascendancy + random cards makes for a good turn, no ascendancy makes the deck very very slow. EDIT: I realized that the crater's claws is actually borderline useless. Once you go infinite with mana and card drawing instead of fetching a crater's claws you can get another helix and temur ascendency, bounce all enemy permanents and attack with unbeatable creatures. I'm considering Briber's Purse as a way to hold off big creatures that doubles as a combo piece.

Khans Goodies

PopcornBunni, 11 years ago

So with Khans of Tarkir coming out, we're getting a new awesome colorless land: Tomb of the Spirit Dragon! This looks like it will work quite nicely to test against nasty burn decks. We'll see what more colorless support there is in the block.

Post-Rotation Changes

Tilwin, 11 years ago

People don't really expect to make WUB (Esper) Control function past rotation. I say it might actually work with the new fetchlands and some of the Mardu removal. Of course we have less options since we are losing the 3 colored spells or lands, but this might actually work... Suggestions are welcome of course!

Having both fetches is good, but not sure how to take the deck, as Elspeth is the only real finisher now.

Thoughts on sideboarding

chillistills, 11 years ago

I've seen the point raised about diluting the decks strategy by sideboarding into things that purely hurt other decks. Since this deck has such a strong and linear strategy, I think its more important to side against the silver bullets used against us in opposing sideboards - e.g. spellskite is a real problem, do paths, supression fields natures claims are required. Same goes for blood moon and Seal of Primordium. On this basis, i'm not convinced about boarding in stony silence over perhaps more spirit links - a card that can be used on both sides of the board.

Zaryon, 11 years ago

Used Fog Bank to replace Jace's Phantasm in the main deck and removed Wall of Frost from side and repleced with Jace's Phantasm. I thought that if I remove Wall of Frost, Phenax, God of Deception's main combo would become slower, not uselles, because of cards like Consuming Aberration and Nemesis of Reason. But It can still be used with Jace's Phantasm.

Give me opinions about this /\

Thoughts on deck direction

chillistills, 11 years ago

I'm thinking the following is the strategy I need to follow:

http://www.mtgtop8.com/event?e=7771&d=244745&f=MO

Fetches aren't strictly necessary in my meta as jund and 8-rack aren't popular - so the old fetch for arbor trick isn't required. With a super streamlined deck the card draw from the spirit dancer shouldn't be required. Note how he doesn't even play keen sense. I understand the path to exile and supression field - you still need to be able to not just fold to spellskite

I like the all-dual land approach - it completely removes the chance of you being colour screwed. I think My landbase should therefore look like:

4 temple garden

4 brushland

4 razorverge thicket

4 city of brass

3 gemstone mine

Where horizon canopy will eventually replace city of brass.

It does appear to fold to bloodmoon which is a bit of a shame, but hopefully with the new fetches allowing 3 colour to easily access basics should mean bloodmoon will fall off in popularity EDIT: Seal of Primordium should help with bloodmoon

Plan:

+2 hyena umbra

+1 spirit mantle (3 irl)

+2 spider Umbra (0 irl)

+2 path to exile (+2 in board as well)

-3 spirit link

-2 unflinching courage

-1 keen sense

+4 temple garden

+3 gemstone mine

-4 forest

-2 plains

-2 sunpetal grove

I like keeping 4 silhanas, I may reduce these eventually but creatures are the most problematic part of drawing, and since I don't have the fetch + arbor trick, having an extra critter on the board can protect against sacrifice.

I swapped Sungrace Pegasus with Mourning Thrull due to it getting +3/+3 from Edge of divinity. Updated description my description too.
