Evershrike

Creature — Elemental Spirit

Flying

Evershrike gets +2/+2 for each Aura attached to it.

(X)(W/B)(W/B): Return Evershrike from your graveyard to play. You may put an Aura card with converted mana cost X or less from your hand into play attached to it. If you don't, remove Evershrike from the game.

As you're playing on a budget, I'd recommend building the deck in 2 or 3 main colors (including green) while using specific ramp & lands like the 'vivid' cycle to hit all five colors for your commander.

You seem to be wanting to play an aura voltron deck, did I get that right? If so, I'd recommend looking at selesnya enchantress decks for a solid basis for card draw & some value enchantments. Many also got a lot cheaper since modern horizons 2! Those won't interrupt with your plan for The Prismatic Bridge and help count towards powerful enchantments like Ethereal Armor.

With your 'slower' gameplan (I don't know how your playgroup is, but this deck seems to want to play the prismatic bridge before it's able to become a threat) it might be valuable to use cards like Ghostly Prison to help protect you.

I understand you're passionate about using Evershrike as your 'actual commander', but with your current decklist The Prismatic Bridge will only do one thing, once. That seems a little tough. In addition to 'always having protection for it in hand for exile' as you mentioned, you'd also need protection from edict effects like Plaguecrafter. Because of this, I'd strongly recommend running not just one, but a few creatures that all support the aura voltron strategy as strong as evershrike does. A few suggestions for those, with reasoning:

Of these, I'd definitely recommend Sigarda and Light-paws. With a selesnya manabase, those two and Evershrike can easily be cast if they ever end up in your hand, and really support the aura voltron strategy, while still making sure you have Evershrike in at most three turns after resolving The Prismatic Bridge.

Other cards that would help you survive, give time for you to deploy your game plan and help control the board would be boardwipes. There are several that allow you to save 1 creature from it, and even if you destroy all creatures your Evershrike can be easily returned to the battlefield.

I also see you have a lot of low mana value auras. Those are nice and cost efficient, but I don't think they fit very well with a deck that has at least WUBRG mana available before it has it's first aura target on the board. I'd advise to lean into the more 'effective' cards, that either allow you to draw (Unquestioned Authority, Keen Sense, Snake Umbra) or provide significant benefits (Bear Umbra, Daybreak Coronet).

I understand that some of these suggestions may be a bit high in the budget range, but you could ask your playgroup if they're fine with you proxying a few cards.

@Grubbernaut, Self-mill isn't need if I can cast The Prismatic Bridge from command zone. If Evershrike is the only creature in the deck the bridge will always put it on the battlefield the next turn.

The decklist is in its very early stages of development. It's an Esika, God of the Tree  Flip commander deck, but I only want to cast the back-half The Prismatic Bridge to consistently play my pet-card Evershrike as my real commander. Evershrike is not legendary and my playgroup is against the idea of me building Evershrike as the commander due to it not being legendary, which is why I'm using Esika as the commander to build my Evershrike EDH deck legally.

This deck is on a budget - most cards should be under a dollar, with the occasional exception being under two dollars and bombs/must-haves being under five dollars if they're exceedingly good/synergistic with the deck's mechanics. Cards listed over $5 I already own.

Because of how The Prismatic Bridge works, to ensure Evershrike is tutored 100% of the time it has to be the only creature card in the 99 along with no planeswalkers. I think this is a fair deck building restriction as it's a trade-off to having access to all 5 colors.

I'm not used to building in 5 colors. I don't own any green staple/ramp cards and green is not really a color I want to lean too heavily into. That being said I feel like I might have gone overkill on the mana rocks. Tips on color fixing would be appreciated. I want to cast The Prismatic Bridge consistently, but I want my deck to rely on only two or three colors to cast most spells.

Because of Evershrike's ability to self-reanimate it doesn't need to use a command zone to ensure its longevity. That being said, spot-removal that exiles and graveyard hate is a death sentence for this deck and thus it's important the deck runs many efficient answers around exile effects, such as a high density of 1-mana auras for emergency reanimations and creature sac-outlets to dodge exile and creature-steal spells and abilities.

I'm not quite sure what direction I should take the deck's arsenal of removal spells. Counter magic would be best against exile spot removal whereas destruction spells work best against graveyard hate permanents.

Lastly, cards like Despondency and Launch are in the list to ensure I always have an aura in hand to reanimate Evershrike with.

I sincerely hope they never allow walkers as commanders. People talk a lot about certain gameplay aspects or building considerations that "break the spirit of the format," but that's a bridge too far, for me.

That being said, as far as the "just for fun" category: Nephilim and Evershrike.

I have never played Rule 0, I'm guessing your "partner" commander can be legendary or not right? Here are some cool pairings I don't consider too powerful.

Brion Stoutarm, would be a great way to sacrifice Evershrike when someone inevitably tries to kill/exile/ steal it, plus you gain life from it.

Ghen, Arcanum Weaver, way to recur some lost auras?

Obosh, the Preypiercer, probably a bit over powered.

Hofri Ghostforge, some synergy.

In my playgroup, we handle things like this by having a "legal" commander in the 99 somewhere. In your case, it would be running a x creature alongside the Evershrike, and a "legal" Mardu legend in the deck.

Evershrike instead of Soulshrieker, obviously.

I came across the Rule 0 format recently and its interested me a lot recently. My favorite card in the game is Evershrike and I've always wanted to build a deck with it as my commander. The problem is I used to run Evershrike a ton in my single-player 60 card deck, and the color red was always present in making that particular deck shine. Evershrike doesn't have red in its color identity, but I heard rule 0 can allow the pairing of two commanders even if neither has the Partner keyword. I'd like to build a two partner commander rule 0 deck with one commander being Evershrike and the other being some card that splashes in Red and no other color.

Most importantly, I know two-commander decks can be pretty strong and I want this deck to revolve only around Evershrike with the red commander serving an incredibly minimal role. I could make it something inconsequential as a Dwarven Trader to pair it with, but I feel like most players would find that distasteful and/or lacking any meaningful relevance with the other commander to be worth justifying this two partner pairing. So I'm looking for a second commander with red in the identity that is too weak by itself to be to push the power level of Evershrike but synergistic enough with Evershrike to be considered worthwhile as a pairing. I guess that sounds paradoxical, so let me provide an example:

Evershrike + Smokebraider - I wouldn't plan on running any elementals in the deck, so Smokebraider's only use would be for casting Evershrike. It should also be noted that the mana Smokebraider creates can't be used on elemental abilities outside of the battlefield accroding to its rulings on gatherer, so it only has merits in casting Evershrike from the command zone. Essentially the Smokebraider plays a tiny role, but it still has some kind of synergy with Evershrike to justify its inclusion while also providing the red splash.

I'm wanting to know if there are other red cards I could use to partner with Evershrike instead of Smokebraider that sort of has the same level of underperformance and synergy.
