Modern Suicide Black

Hello all! I am currently working on a modern, somewhat budget, mono black aggro deck inspired by the old suicide black decks. I would like any card suggestions that you have.

My question is, is this a viable archetype anymore, or even feasible?

For anyone wondering what I have for a rough decklist so far, here it is: Ultra Budget Mono-Black Demon's Ritual

how competitive are you trying to be?

DragonSliver9001 Good question! I am not trying to make it a super competitive deck, but ideally, a deck that works at FNM.

i'm guessing by "suicide" you mean a sacrifice or "aristocrats" deck, which i don't recall ever really seeing in modern. might be hard to do on a budget.

DragonSliver9001 Sorry for the lack of clarification, I mean like a black aggro deck, basically using your life as a resource to get your opponent's life to 0 as quickly as possible. Death's Shadow is a good card for a deck like this. I already have a modern aristocrats deck that works pretty well.

i'm not really aware of any cards off the top of my head that are aggro or offensive. most of the cards i know that cost life are defensive control cards like Thoughtseize and Dismember. i'm not sure how this kinda deck would work. Death's Shadow doesn't really go into "aggro" decks, but rather midrange or even control decks that can protect it and yourself, because otherwise the opponent will just finish you off while your LP is low.

DragonSliver9001: Suicide was an old deck archytype back around when extended was a format, basically using powerful but dangerous creatures such as Phyrexian Negator and Carnophage along with Dark Ritual for quick starts. It also featured Hatred and Unmask for kills out of nowhere through interaction.

It would certainly be a different deck in modern.

Death's Shadow is definitely the deck you want to look into. It's generally not mono-black, but you could certainly stay in mono-black until you can build a higher budget. It'd look something like:

4x Death's Shadow
4x Street Wraith
4x Scourge of the Skyclaves
4x Abyssal Persecutor
4x Carrion Feeder
4x Vampire Lacerator

4x Mutagenic Growth
2x Dismember
4x Thoughtseize
2x Apostle's Blessing
4x Mishra's Bauble

4x Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx
1x Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
15x Swamp

You could probably toss in Dark Confidant, Phyrexian Obliterator, and Gurmag Angler in place of a few non-creature spells. As your budget grows, add more colors. Red is really good for Monastery Swiftspear, Lightning Bolt, and Temur Battle Rage. More importantly, fetch + shock lands is the quickest way to grow Death's Shadow. Bloodstained Mire -> Blood Crypt -> Thoughtseize turn one followed by another fetch + shock gives you at least a 1/1 Death's Shadow on turn two. It could possibly be even bigger via Street Wraith and one of your Phyrexian mana spells. Sometimes you just have the nuts and kill them on turn three with Temur Battle Rage after stacking up on a bunch of Mutagenic Growths.
