Update 5: Cabal Stronghold —April 27, 2018

Cabal Stronghold is a less powerful Cabal Coffers that won't interact with Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth because it requires Basic Swamps. Still, I think it'll help in mono-black. Removed Blasted Landscape.

Someday I'll get a Cabal Coffers in here, too.

Mike94: Hmmmm. Myojin of Night's Reach is neat but pretty costly to cast. My concern is that by the time I cast it (mid to late game), my opponents won't have many cards in hand so it might not be worth the mana investment. I'll think on it but I'm not rushing to add it.

Kyln: No argument about Ensnaring Bridge, it's perfect. The only reason I didn't include it from the start was budget concerns. But I splurged and picked one up... a week before it was revealed as a reprint in Masters 25 :p

notorioez: I've tried to cut down on the single-player-target spells in this deck and for the cost of Monomania, I'd probably rather something that makes them discard their whole hand. Like maybe Mind Twist... which I just recently took out.

IAmTheWraith you definitely grabbed my attention with Liliana, Heretical Healer  Flip as a commander. I was thinking about her for at least a month after your suggestion and even printed out as proxy of her to test as a commander. Then I realized her trigger to transform is based on another nontoken creature I control dying (not her dying), which is a bit more limiting when I only have 12 other creatures in the deck. In the end, I'm gonna pass on her as a general.

I hear you EternalBrewmaster. One with Nothing is super cool and I've used it in Dredge decks to great effect ;) But here it's not really on-strategy: I want to focus on making my opponents discard and while I don't mind "everyone discards" effects, there's little benefit to only me discarding my hand.

Very nice deck! One question, can you use Crypt Ghast in mono Black? Because have a Withe Mark in the text..Thanks for the ideias!

Lets all brainstorm and see if we can figure out a way to stop people from ever asking the crypt ghast/Blind Obedience question ever again. Its so tiresome. Yes tiagompm, you can play it in a monoblack deck, the hybrid symbol is in reminder text, not rules text. If you look at pretty much 100% of monoblack decks they have crypt ghast so that should be a good clue.

Ive never understood why so many people runDoom Blade over Go for the Throat. Like, what artifact creature threats justify not being able to kill Olivia, Sheoldred, etc...?

Haha, thanks for answering the Crypt Ghast question, EternalBrewmaster. I agree, it'd be nice to find a way to make it super obvious so people stop asking about its legality in mono-black decks. I almost want to plaster text over the card image here on T/O so on hover-over people see "Yes, this can go in a mono-B deck. Reminder text isn't part of a card's color identity." (Note: not a serious suggestion)

Point taken S1ydevi1! Back in the day, this deck ran both spells. I must not have been paying much attention when I chose to keep Doom Blade over Go for the Throat. Or maybe I was blinded by the cool new art from the Duel Deck version. Either way, I'll correct that right away :)

I just hope you dont end up losing to some kind of Metalworker shenanigans, with GftT stuck in your hand, now that Ive convinced you to switch. If so, at least you have an easy scapegoat.

Ahahahaha NyeShnefDerp! I don't think I've paid attention to that flavor text before. That's pretty hilar.

It's okay S1ydevi1, there's no Metalworker shenanigans in my meta yet. But if I lose to a Blightsteel Colossus, I promise not to hold it against you ;)

vargaszm I don't think I need Fellwar Stone. I do like a -cost rock, but in mono-black it's pretty ok if my rocks only give colourless like Fractured Powerstone and Mind Stone. I guess Fellwar would be an upgrade to the weirdo-powerstone and would occasionally provide coloured mana. I'll see if I have a spare one in my collection.

Really not a huge fan of field of ruin because of how it ramps your opponents. It gives everyone a land, not just you and the person whose land you killed.

S1ydevi1: Whoops. Riiiiight.

I totally agree with you, nlaz123. I hate giving my opponents that land advantage with Field of Ruin, so I'd use it sparingly. It can be a nice political move to take out someone's Gaea's Cradle and ramp everyone else in the process. Cool bonus ability of this land: The forced shuffle can get rid of something awesome your opponent just tutored to the top of their library ;)

Rack effects but no Shrieking Affliction? You also might want to consider Delirium Skeins and Tasigur's Cruelty since they hit every player at once which can be devastating in multiplayer especially with a Waste Not on the field.
