Seems like a cool deck. I love Talrand so I'm glad to see him getting lots of play. Reliquary Tower barely helps you in this, I'd take them out for more Desolate Lighthouse or even Evolving Wilds because of the relatively difficult manabase including all the 2blue or 2red. Thundermaw Hellkite is an absolutely brutal wincon, I'd find room for at least one more. Maybe take out 1 Burning Vengeance since it's not quite as effective. Maybe even -1 Talrand since running 4 legends might run you into some trouble with the Legendary rule.
Thanks for the advice! I was actually thinking about adding another Thundermaw Hellkite as well, so that will be a definite addition. Reliquary Tower can also be taken out, as I am trying to acquire a Tamiyo, the Moon Sage which I think will greatly benefit this deck.
It doesn't suck because it has a very strong deck build around dragons and drakes... In standard.
Thanks for coming to my defense AmericanTrnksta, but he's a friend of mine just bustin my balls lol
The only thing that sucks is when some of the cards cycle out this deck will be a bit slower with double colors n all for counters and no pOnder :/ but I'm sure it'll still do good.
Not really, they will have new counter spells in the Ravnica set when it comes out so I'll be able to replace Mana Leak . Negate is already reprinted in M13, and I can replace Ponder with Index when it cycles in October. Thats really it, no big deal, the deck will remain pretty much the same
Yeah it all depends what can replace mana leak but to me there is a good diff between 1u to uu to play a spell but I'm sure ravnica will have some sick cards which they need to start leaking cuz I'm impatient lol Oh and check out that deck I posted life is sweet death is pure its pretty awesome
Wow, I kind of like it. I think Moonveil Dragon might be kind of cool in here. Maybe a couple of Bonfire of the Damned as well to clear the field up a bit. I think you should be able to live without the Burning Vengeance s; you could drop them for more control (you only have 8 triggers for it). You might want some answers for zombies however, the pillar helps, but I have seen some frightening zombie lists that can lay the damage on fast. Try and add in some life gain (maybe Batterskull ?) and some way of blowing the field away like Devastation Tide to the side. maybe Vapor Snag as well? +1
Batterskull would indeed be good, but alas I have none...
Burning Vengeance I threw in here to be additional removal, but I was thinking about taking them out for cards like Bonfire or Temporal Mastery might be good. I did have Vapor Snag s in here but I took them out for some reason... I'll try and sneak them back in somewhere
Thanks for the suggestions and the +1!
that does seem good, though now that I think about it, isn't the balefire a bit too expensive for the deck? given the amount of lands, it would take until turn 7-9 to cast it?
Its in there as kind of a last line of defense. I mean if a swarm of drakes and Thundermaw Hellkite s haven't killed you by now, this thing sure will. The deck is quite capable of stalling out till then
I think another tamiyo/control spell would do you one better. Most of your spells cost 2 to begin with.
I agree, I think I'm gonna swap it out for a Spelltwine . That card is pretty beast here, its just a bit expensive
Either that or another Temporal Mastery ...haven't decided
I'll just leave this card to the winds. Get it?
Lol I actually had 2 of them in here, but I removed them for the Bonfire of the Damned and the Temporal Mastery . I can't seem to fit them back in, taking out instants and sorceries is kind of counterproductive here. Any suggestions?
I think you could lose a Think Twice and a Pillar of Fire for those. You could also increase the card count on your deck, seeing that you land base seems weak.
Have you play tested it?
I think Ghostly Flicker isn't really good enough. Sure, it's fun with Thundermaw Hellkite , but that should win by itself anyway and the only time it's useful with the snapcaster is late game, at which point you'd rather be doing something more awesome. I suggest adding a Mana Leak and 2 Bonfire of the Damned s to replace them. +1 from me. :)
Thanks for the +1! This is true, but the deck is kind of based around Talrand, Sky Summoner so I thought a couple of additional spells to save him from spot removal might not be a bad thing. Acquiring more Bonfire of the Damned will be difficult, they are very expensive and people are not so eager to trade them. If I can acquire more I will absolutely put them in. I think I might replace the Ghostly Flicker with Vapor Snag s
I think it's better with all the Caverns around, as well as mana dorks, and it'll drop you to 60. Definitely +1.
I hear you on that, however, if I take out the Fog Bank s I have zero early defense. Against G/R aggro I'll get murdered without something on the field in the first couple turns
If that's the case you're screwed anyway. R/G aggro would flip a huntsmaster turn 3 and kill it. By then that's the 4th creature on the field. Not to mention Pillar of Flame is in R/G also. But, hey, just an opinion.
Or a beast turn 2 drop would be Augur of Bolas , a 1/3 body which totally helps your cause.
I have them in the sideboard, I've been trying to work them into the mainboard, but couldn't decide what to take out for them
and I don't have a Tamiyo, the Moon Sage , I definitely want one in this deck, so I'll have to find one for trade
Awesome though. Definitely making big strides towards competing with tier 1 decks.
cycle out ponder for index and add 2x evolving wilds...if something doesn't come out like ponder
Dude this deck has become so awesome. Love all the phyrexian mana cards thrown in but it sucks that they'll cycle out. The only issue is Pillar of Flame plus Surgical Extraction but since you don't have full sets of either maybe it won't be too much of a problem. Still, Searing Spear is a nice replacement even if it is 2 mana.
Thanks man I appreciate it. Yea I agree that those cards don't mix, but I haven't had too many issues with it of yet. I playtested it this morning with a Tamiyo, the Moon Sage in it, but didn't draw it enough to see if it really made a difference.
just outta curiosity why no Delver of Secrets Flip you have 25 instants/sorceries in the main deck which makes a turn 2 flip more likely then not. It also gives you a lil more early games sense everything else is kinda midrangy. Deck does seem pretty sweet though, +1
I haven't really found a spot to fit them in. I don't want to take out any Augur of Bolas or Snapcaster Mage to fit in Delver seeing that those 2 creatures are crucial to this deck running efficiently. I also don't want to decrease my number of instants/sorceries, that would be counterproductive. Talrand, Sky Summoner and the dragons are the focal point of the deck, so I am at a loss for Delver
Drop 1x surgical 1x dissipate 1x augur 1x snapAdd 4x delver
The way the deck is built now, it's friggen awesome. +1
Love the flavor of this deck! The only question I have is about the number of Talrand, Sky Summoner . I think you can use 3x Talrand, Sky Summoner and 3x Augur of Bolas . It will increase the chance to get one Talrand early in the game and put a lot of pressure. This is the only suggestion I have to this very solid deck.
I can't help but feel that 19 lands are too few for a deck with 5 drops and Bonfire of the Damned , especially with only 7 cantrips. You may want to add a few more one mana card draw spells or lands in order to make things flow better
@ wishdragon, I definitely agree about going 3 and 3 on the Talrands and Augurs, its already been changed. I played it this morning against a friend and I didn't draw Talrand very much at all. Thanks for the input!
@ hairlord, I actually have very few land issues with this deck. I almost always draw the the amount of land that I need. I had it at 22 and was getting flooded way too much. Its been drawing really consistent at 19
I made a couple minor changes im gonna use Turn to Frog while its still standard :) Let them swing big and then turn it into a 1/1 and block with my new created drake :)
I did notice that I have been having trouble with the mana base i might have to go to 20
Nicely done brother, let's compare decks:
Awesome man! Good to hear the deck is a success elsewhere too. Thanks!
Looks great, but I think running Gitaxian Probe would be a 4-of in here seeing as you're running 19 lands? I can understand where you're coming from in terms of the "free" spells, and how they synergize with Talrand as well, but I just think it would probably be a bit inconsistent. Nice work though.
19 lands running bonfire, and thundermaw? I find you miss too many land drops to run them consistently. I missed Talrand a lot of the time as well. I feel negate is a sideboard card and should be replace by leak.
-1 mental misstep for +1 probe or gut shot imo. Maybe find some room for lands. It really depends on your meta though.
